I bought Hacking Exposed 6 when it came out in 2009. I was surprised to find Hacking Exposed 7 (the most recent version) was written in 2012, 6 years ago. It is my fault for not looking closely at the available information. Looking through the section titles listed in the At A Glance section, most of the original parts are present in the new book and have almost identical page numbering up until part 6 Cyber crime and Advanced Persistent Threats, there the page numbering diverge. It appears as though chapter 7 Network Devices, present in version 6 is gone in version 7, however if your examine the contents pages you will see the same material is present in both books but rearranged into different chapters. The one seemingly original chapter in version 7 is Mobile Hacking. In the years between version 7 published in 2012 and the end of 2018 hacking has changed greatly but, with the exception of sections on Cybercrimes and Mobile Hacking, the most recent version of Hacking Exposed seems to be a rehash of information already present in the nine year old Hacking Exposed 6.
Nice book, but old techniques. Still a good read for anyone starting out.
I recall the first time I read a Hacking Exposed book. Learned some new things. By the time this tome rolled out I had read portions of it in prior editions and there wasn't that much new material. This was a few years ago and now we're happily running Win 10. So many of the basics are still the same though. Still a decent read.
I'm in vulnerability assessment and pen testing field started last year. I seldom buy computer books these day but this is one of the exceptions.Company paid $5000 for my SANS 560 course but not willing to spend the money to buy this book so I got it for myself.I'm still reading it and all I can said is, go get yours.
Read it carefully, do not miss a step. This title presents clearly what hackers do and vulnerabilities of your own system. Great examples of tools used by hackers. After reading the book I got armed with tons of information against hacking. Vigilance is not a option. Strongly recommended....
Excellent Book. Worth the money.
Overall a good book. It has been updated many times over many years so some of the info is very dated. For example, there is a chapter on hacking modems. Our company has zero modems but I suppose some companies still have them. I just skimmed over that. Also, some of the threats discussed have long been patched by everybody and effectively eradicated. There may be some educational foundation for discussing but the book is long already so I would prefer they be removed. I liked the newer chapter on cell phone hacking and jail breaking.

You're going to have to do some leg work of your own to fully grasp classical mechanics from this text, but as a primer, or a theoretical background, it's a fairly solid textbook.
I found this book to be a fantastic overview of classical mechanics. Having already had a fairly extensive background in undergraduate level math and physics, I found the level on which this book operates to be a perfect next step: very rigorous but clear, with many excellent problems at the end of each chapter which introduce important topics and provide a good range of difficulty. This would probably not be a good introduction to the topic, but would be excellent for anyone with at least the equivalent of a freshman physics and calculus course under their belt who wants a more advanced treatment.
This is a great book! It may sound like a minor detail, but the font on a paperback textbook makes all the difference in the world! The author spaces the text from the equations and uses a very elegant style to format everything. He strategically uses the dot-notation for time derivatives in places to reduce clutter and d/dt notation where emphasis is needed. The subjects are arranged in a fluid fashion and is suitable for [in my opinion] both Intermediate and Graduate level Mechanics.
This book was actually better than my graduate level book. Very clear and lots of detail.
This book wad required for class.
This book covers a huge amount of classic physics techniques and theories. I bought it for the Hamiltonian section but I really like reading it. Note - I am not a physicist but I have a masters in math and do a lot of reading for amusement in physics of all kinds.
Packs a lot for its (thankfully) small physical size. Great review/reference travel text.

We must not be the intended audience for this book, because, although we are indeed planning my wedding, we didn't find it particularly helpful. Being a atheist/agnostic combo who live in the Godless wilderness that is San Francisco, and who are planning a nontraditional wedding, we were at sea with this book. The book carries several assumptions which are not true for myself and my partner, which made the tone (of course your wedding will be deeply religious/spiritual, of course you wouldn't want people diminishing the sanctity of the ceremony by drinking alcohol during it, etc.) a touch off-putting. It is quite lengthly, and written in a slow, thorough style which would suit many readers quite well, but I found hard to scan, and the lack of an index made it difficult to find specific info. I think this book will be fine for many folks, especially those who are religious, but it didn't serve my needs.
I loved this book even though I'm not the intended audience at all. The author is a Christian pastor, we are atheists. The author says you should hire a professional officiant, we had my aunt do it. But we just basically ignored the preface and found the rest of the book very useful!She explains each part of the ceremony very clearly and includes a lot of wording options. Some are spiritual, some are secular, some use flowery language, some are plainspoken. Of all the websites and books I checked I did not find better wording options anywhere.Reading through all of the options was really helpful to see what things we absolutely did not want, vs what resonated with us. In the end, we started with a base of her words, and changed them or re-wrote parts until it felt like our words. This book gave us a really important foundation to build upon, and that was just what we needed.
This book proved extremely helpful as my now-husband and I were having a friend officiate our wedding and so we were starting from scratch and had to build our ceremony from the ground up. We ended up taking some of the passages from the book and personalizing them to add our customized flair. We received so many compliments after the ceremony (I'm sure this is in large part to how well our friend officiated!), and I know the well-written passages added so much meaning to the event and were different than a cookie-cutter ceremony.
This book is very helpful when planning a wedding. I created a draft for the bride and groom, and loaned them this book with some samples selected so they could pick and choose for what worked for them. I'd recommend this for an officiant or a couple who is not sure what they want yet but they want to ensure the ceremony is meaningful to them.
As a wedding officiant, I have purchased many ceremony planning books over the years. This has become my "go to" book, especially for couples who want a more secular (rather than religious) ceremony. I recently purchased the newest edition in the Kindle version, which cimes with downloadable pdf files of the example verbiage for different parts of the ceremony. This makes it easier to email suggestions back and forth to the bride and groom. I can't recommend this book more highly.

She waited until 6 weeks prior, but I could not turn her down.I had never done one and I had no idea what to do!This book helped me through a very stress-filled time buy giving me a wealth of information.Some of the people at the wedding actually thought that I was a pro because of the attention to detail.A few months ago, my daughter was engaged and asked if I would perform her ceremony.Once again, this book is off of the shelf and on my desk.Best of all, I had e-mailed Dr. Johnson a question today and I had my answer from her within hours!
I could never have performed my first wedding without this book! The happy couple and I poured over all the magnificent choices for wording, agenda, tone, who-does-what and selected those things that were appropriate for the kind of wedding we had in mind. We added our own touches, but without Judith's abundant and loving information, we'd have been lost! Turns out the wedding was very very sweet -- tears of joy all around!
I found this book extremely helpful. We also needed a ceremony without any God references, and this got us 95% of the way there. We mixed and matched sections, revamped a couple sentences that still included the "G" word, incorporated personal vows and readings and - ta da - a personal ceremony with just 2 evenings' work.Our most frequent compliment from guests was how personal and meaningful the ceremony was. "A two kleenex-er", according to one guest. Most importantly, it was meaningful and sacred for us, and 100% true to our beliefs. Well worth the effort.

Psychologist Daniel Crosby works in the field of behavioral finance. “Given that you, as a member of the human family, have tendencies toward impatience, arrogance and a fetish for complexity, it is very likely that you will screw this up… At my last count, psychologists and economists had documented 117 biases capable of obscuring lucid financial decision-making.â€Crosby presents 10 rules of behavioral self-management.Rule #1 – You Control What Matters Most. “The behavior gap measures the loss that the average investor incurs as a result of emotional responses to market conditions.†As an example, the author notes that the best performing mutual fund during the period 2000-2010 was CGM Focus, with an 18.2% annualized return; however the average investor in the fund had a negative return! The reason is that they tended to buy when the fund was soaring and sell in a panic when the price dipped. More on volatility later…Rule #2 — You Cannot Do This Alone. “Vanguard estimated that the value added by working with a competent financial advisor is roughly 3% per year… The benefits of working with an advisor will be ‘lumpy’ and most concentrated during times of profound fear and greed… The best use of a financial advisor is as a behavioral coach rather than an asset manager.†Make sure your advisor is a fiduciary. “A fiduciary has a legal requirement to place his clients’ interest ahead of his own.â€Rule #3 – Trouble Is Opportunity. “The market feels most scary when it is actually most safe… Corrections and bear markets are a common part of any investment lifetime, they represent long-term buying opportunity and a systematic process is required to take advantage of them.†The author quotes Ben Carlson: “Markets don’t usually perform the best when they go from good to great. They actually show the best performance when things go from terrible to not-quite-so-terrible as before.â€Rule #4 – If You’re Excited, It’s a Bad Idea. “Emotions are the enemy of good investment decisions.â€Rule #5 – You Are Not Special. “A belief in personal exceptionality causes us to ignore potential danger, take excessively concentrated stock positions and stray from areas of personal competence… An admission of our own mediocrity is what is required for investment excellence… This tendency to own success and outsource failure [known as fundamental attribution error] leads us to view all investment successes as personal skill, thereby robbing us of opportunities for learning as well as any sense of history. When your stocks go up, you credit your personal genius. When your stocks go down, you fault externalities. Meanwhile, you learn nothing.â€Rule #6 – Your Life Is the Best Benchmark. “As a human race, we are generally more interested in being better than other people than we are in doing well ourselves.†However, “measuring performance against personal needs rather than an index has been shown to keep us invested during periods of market volatility, enhance savings behavior and help us maintain a long-term focus.â€Rule #7 – Forecasting Is For Weathermen. “The research is unequivocal—forecasts don’t work. As a corollary, neither does investing based on these forecasts…. Scrupulously avoid conjecture about the future, rely on systems rather than biased human judgment and be diversified enough to show appropriate humility.â€Rule #8 – Excess Is Never Permanent. “We expect that if a business is well-run and profitable today this excellence will persist.†The author quotes James O’Shaughnessy: “‘The most ironclad rule I have been able to find studying masses of data on stock market, both in the United States and developed foreign markets, is the idea of reversion to the mean.’ Contrary to the popular idea of bear markets being risky and bull markets being risk-free, the behavioral investor must concede that risk is actually created in periods of market euphoria and actualized in down markets.â€Rule #9 – Diversification Means Always Having to Say You’re Sorry. “You can take it to the bank that some of your assets will underperform every single year… The simple fact is that no one knows which asset classes will do well at any given time and diversification is the only logical response to such uncertainty… Broad diversification and rebalancing have been shown to add half a percentage point of performance per year, a number that can seem small until you realize how it is compounded over an investment lifetime.â€Rule #10 – Risk Is Not a Squiggly Line. “Wall Street is stuck in a faulty, short-sighted paradigm that views risk as a mathematical reduction [of volatility]… a flaw that can be profitably exploited by the long-term, behavioral investor who understands the real definition of risk… Volatility is the norm, not the exception, and it should be planned for and diversified against, but never run from… Let me say emphatically, there is no greater risk than overpaying for a stock, regardless of its larger desirability as a brand.â€One of the most interesting concepts in the book is that investing in an index is not as passive as we might assume. Crosby quotes Rob Arnott: “‘The process is subjective—not entirely rules based and certainly not formulaic. There are many who argue that the S&P 500 isn’t an index at all: It’s an actively managed portfolio selected by a committee—whose very membership is a closely guarded secret!—and has shown a stark growth bias throughout its recent history of additions and deletions… The capitalization-weighted portfolio overweights the overvalued stocks and underweights the undervalued stocks…’ In a very real sense, index investing locks in the exact opposite of what we ought to be doing and causes us to buy high and sell low… Buying a capitalization weighted index like the S&P 500 means that you would have held nearly 50% tech stocks in 2000 and nearly 40% financials in 2008.â€â€œOnce we realize that passive indexes are not mined from the Earth, but rather assembled arbitrarily by committee, the most pertinent question is not if you are actively investing (you are) but how best to actively invest.â€â€œBehavioral risk is the potential for your actions to increase the probability of permanent loss of capital… Behavioral risk is a failure of self… Our own behavior poses at least as great a threat as business or market risks… We must design a process that is resistant to emotion, ego, bad information, misplaced attention and our natural tendency to be loss averse.â€Crosby presents rule-based behavioral investment, or RBI for short. “The myriad behavior traps to which we can fall prey can largely be mitigated through the simple but elegant process that is RBI. The process is easily remembered by the following four Cs: CONSISTENCY – frees us from the pull of ego, emotion and loss aversion, while focusing our efforts on uniform execution. CLARITY – we prioritize evidence-based factors and are not pulled down the seductive path of worrying about the frightening but unlikely or the exciting but useless. COURAGEOUSNESS – we automate the process of contrarianism: doing what the brain knows best but the heart and stomach have trouble accomplishing. CONVICTION – helps us walk the line between hubris and fear by creating portfolios that are diverse enough to be humble and focused enough to offer a shot at long-term outperformance.â€â€œRule-based investing is about making simple, systematic tweaks to your investment portfolio to try and get an extra percentage point or two that has a dramatic positive impact on managing risk and compounding your wealth over time… We know that what works are strategies that are diversified, low fee, low turnover and account for behavioral biases.â€â€œJust like a casino, you will stick to your discipline in all weather, realizing that if you tilt probability in your favor ever so slightly, you will be greatly rewarded in the end… Becoming a successful behavioral investor looks a great deal like being The House instead of The Drunken Vacationer.â€The author quotes Jason Zweig: “You will do a great disservice to yourselves… if you view behavioral finance mainly as a window onto the world. In the Laws of Wealth, Dr. Crosby makes a compelling argument for what we can control – our own behavior – may be the most important aspect of all in determining the long-term success of our financial plans.A psychologist by training, Dr. Crosby lays a foundation of evidence that the behavioral shortcuts we use to make our every day lives more efficient actually cripple our ability to be successful investors. While this foundation is built by the thorough citation of academic studies, it is illustrated with entertaining anecdotes.Perhaps that is what makes this book so great. It never feels like a dry recitation of prior work. Dr. Crosby expertly weaves into the academic basis interesting quotes from practitioners and compelling narratives that entertain and educate.The first half the book lays out Dr. Crosby’s 10 laws of wealth, each rule crafted to help address and combat a unique behavioral bias. The basis for the rules themselves are discussed at length with a surprisingly cross-disciplinary approach: a citation of a seminal behavioral finance paper may be sandwiched between a pop-culture reference and the results of a highly quantitative study. Chapters are finished with a highly practical three point summary, laying out what we should think, ask, and do as a result of what we just learned.The second half of the book outlines why misbehavior may actually be opportunity for prudent investors. A few simple rules are outlined – again supported by a significant weight of evidence – that may help the everyday investor take advantage of the behavioral biases exhibited by other market participants to create excess return.My only critique of this book is that is can sometimes feel more like a well organized discussion of other people’s work (“OPWâ€) than a truly unique contribution to the field of behavioral finance itself. This use of OPW can sometimes feel a bit jarring as the author rapidly jumps between different anecdotes and studies. While the book has a comprehensive thread of thought, I sometimes found myself laughing at an anecdote mid-chapter, and then scratching my head trying to recall what the overall chapter theme was.Yet perhaps Dr. Crosby’s greatest contribution to this space is the fact that he has created a very accessible and comprehensive introduction to behavioral finance in a highly entertaining package. In a field where results can be locked away in indecipherable academic papers and numeric tables, The Laws of Wealth does an expert job compiling, translating, explaining, and entertaining to ultimately illustrate a singular, but highly important point: we ultimately control the single most important factor in investing – ourselves.

Though not a reader or speaker of Chinese, to me this seems an excellent translation in that it is direct and clear, with footnotes sufficient for understanding the ideas and their genealogy/s (issues of translation and specific sources are noted, unlike in some of the more popularly-marketed Taoist books). However, in reading these internal-alchemy books, I'm usually still left wondering, "but what are you actually supposed to do? how do you progress from one stage to another? what the heck does a firing-times (et al.) really mean since it's just a metaphor? etc." And this one was similar. I get the allegories and the symbolic system at this point, but frankly I still don't really quite know what it entails in "real life". Most such texts purport to reveal something, but end up reverting to: "this is secret, so you need to find a teacher for direct oral transmission." But that's not possible for everyone. In fairness, this book was not as heavy on the "get a teacher" emphasis as many others are, it's just that the commentary is no more specific or plain than the original poem-series. Don't get me wrong, I still liked reading it, and some of the symbols are really interesting poetic images in themselves. It's just that obviously there's something I'm missing. Actually, the commentator (Wang Jie)'s own poem at the end spoke to me a tiny bit more than his commentary. And, this press also has published Wang Mu's 'Foundations of Internal Alchemy' (also tr. Pregadio), which really did just about explain it all. So perhaps in re-reading these two in conjunction, and doing the work....
Extraordinary book for those who already know something of navigating the celestial pathways. Inner teachings translated to a level far more readily understood by fairly experienced students.
Of scholarship and translation and this is no exception. Simply the best in English and in terms of clarity I suspect in any language including Chinese (because these classical texts do require translation, explication and interpretation).

There were parts I actually laughed out loud. Not through any sort of insensitivity or callousness, but because I related PRECISELY.I javw have been on the road to recovery for awhile now. I have finally started to put my butt in gear, and it's good to know there are others who suffer from scrupulousity as well.I greatly appreciate the raw honesty as I am terrible at in personally.She does give advice as to how to treat it as well. Exposure therapy is so important.
Great book for anyone that knows someone or is suffering from OCD or any form of anxiety. This book provides a great and realistic perspective of how organized religion can sometimes help or hinder on the path to finding help with mental health. Very encouraging and helpful when dealing with finding a balance of taking care of ones emotional wellbeing while still keeping the faith.
I loved this book. The author is so honest about her struggles with OCD, and her experiences offer hope to others who have OCD. She shares how her faith was impacted by her mental illness and vice versa. I highly recommend this to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who suffer with OCD (or who have family members who do), but I think anyone (of any religion or no religion) will benefit from reading Kari's story.
I loved how open and honest the author was about her experience. Several in my family struggle with mental illness, and this book gave me hope that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I loved the tips that Kari gave as well throughout the book. This is definitely worth the read.
This book was a beautiful and clear explanation of the symptoms and path OCD takes. The author tells her story, which is both vulnerable and insightful. A must read for anyone looking for a better understanding of mental illness and the paths to "recovery."

I never could imagine having to deal with this mental health issue the way she has. She shares her ups and downs and her incredible challenges with a “never-give-up†attitude. This book changed my whole perspective on my mental illness. It brought me hope and helped me understand that other people get what it's like. It was able to explain things that I've wanted to say I could just never find the words.

The title indicated that it contained the play "THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE" not Brecht's comments on the play; since I purchased it to preview the play before I saw it, I was disappointed.
Nice cheap method to pick up the reading for the theater history class. It's used but it's was still in a shape that will last you. And it came on time depending on your delivery method.
One of the master communist playwright Bertolt Brecht's strengths as an artist was the ability to set up a moral dilemma and work it out to a conclusion, not always a satisfactory one, by play's end. This is unusual in a seemingly orthodox follower of the old Stalinist' socialist realist' cultural program. This work nevertheless permitted Brecht to address an age-old question about the nature of property ownership, extending it from its natural and historic setting in land and chattels to the question of personal human ownership.The question posed here is whether a child abandoned by its natural mother then found and raised by another women should go to the former or that latter. Nice dilemma, right? But Brecht, as seem in Mother Courage and other parables, is not above cutting right to the bone on moral questions. What makes this work a cut above some of Brecht's more didactic plays is the way that he weaves the parable about the odd resolution of an ancient Chinese property dispute and places that `wisdom' in context of a then current dispute between two Soviet-era communes.In the ancient dispute the judge who is called upon to render judgment, using the circle as a medium to resolve the dispute, seems to be Solomonic but is really a buffoon. This is pure Brechtian irony. This says as much about Brecht attitude toward property as it does about the old time Chinese justice system. The question of property rights as presented by Brecht and their value as a societal glue is also something the reader or viewer of this play should think about as well.
Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle," written in self-imposed exile towards the end of World War II, is a story within a play, in which a bard, or singer, interrupts a group of Caucasian farmers arguing over ownership of land that has been ravaged by Nazi tanks and entertains them with a relevant tale of yore. In a city called Grusinia, the Governor is executed in a coup and his wife flees for her life, abandoning their baby son Michael, who is picked up by a humble kitchen maid named Grusha. Having recently betrothed herself to a soldier named Simon who is away on duty, she sets out on a cross-country journey with the infant to get help from her brother, a farmer in a distant village.Lavrenti, her brother, suggests she get married immediately to avoid suspicion that the baby is hers out of wedlock, and the most available candidate is a local wretched peasant. After living with this man for a couple of years, Grusha is apprehended by soldiers who have come to take young Michael, the sole heir of the deposed Governor's estate, back to Grusinia. The case of Michael's custody, contested by the Governor's wife against Grusha, is brought to trial, where the judge, a drunk named Azdak whose unofficial appointment to this position is a farce, decrees that the boy will be placed inside a circle drawn with chalk on the courtroom floor, and that the woman who is able to pull him out of the circle is the real mother. (Study the judge's exact words when you read this.)Although the story is of medieval Chinese origin, Brecht's play is a sort of refashioning of the Biblical anecdote about Solomon and expands the idea by supplying a whole backstory to the women's argument. Solomon's judgment is accepted because his wisdom is universally considered to be impeccable, but what of a man like Azdak who functions on whim more than on wisdom? The ending is subtly brilliant in the sense that the outcome of the contest is subject to semantic debate (whether you think the judgment is fair or logical or contradictory depends on how closely you read the judge's words), but also in the question of irony or sincerity in the suggestion that true justice will be conferred by nature rather than by man.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a very entertaining and enjoyable play to read or perform, whilst also containing attitudes and ideologies to analyze. It's a great read for its own sake, but can also easily be used to teach literature in a classroom. A great play!
