Review

In Flying Dinosaurs John Pickrell challenges everything you were told about dinosaurs as a child.... Through extensive research and interviews with leading paleontologists, Flying Dinosaurs charts how each new discovery confirmed the link between dinosaurs and birds.... The author's fascination with dinosaurs is evident throughout the book. But his passion aside, it takes a skilled science writer to transform the incremental progress of a field such as paleontology into a narrative that sustains a book. (Nicky Phillips The Sydney Morning Herald)After digesting all that Pickrell has to offer, it will be difficult for any reader to think about dinosaurs -- or birds -- in the same ways they had before. (Publishers Weekly)[An] engaging book. (GrrlScientist - a Guardian Blog)A remarkable book, with a wealth of interviews with palaeontologists and a comprehensive catalogue of virtually all the findings of feathered dinosaurs since 1996. It's a useful catch-up if you have lost track of this rapidly developing area of palaentology, and full of fascinating, unusual facts―did you know that birds are the closest living relatives to the crocodile? (Bill Condie Cosmos Magazine)[Flying Dinosaurs] deftly covers the history behind the decades-old debate over just when and how birds first arose. (Bruce Dorminey Forbes)Pickrell covers the history of changing thought on dinosaurs and the bird-dinosaur link.... Pickrell's book is well written and accessible, and thus is an excellent companion. (Greg Laden Greg Laden's Blog)A detailed and timely overview of our rapidly-improving scientific understanding of how massive, lumbering dinosaurs evolved into agile, flying birds. (Mike Lee The Conversation)A readable introduction to the subject. (Ian Paulsen The Bridbooker Report)[A] fast-paced.... Fascinating read. (BirdWatching)A well-structured overview of the various lines of evidence connecting the evolution of birds with that of theropod dinosaurs.... Any general reader or student interested in dinosaurs should find it a pleasure to read.... Highly recommended. (Choice)

This was an enlightening summary of what has been going on in the past two decades with regards to paleontological research in the dinosaur to bird transition. I pride myself in keeping up with vertebrate paleontology, but Pickrell's well-researched review, especially of many of the new Chinese discoveries, held nuggets of information I had not completely mined. His writing style flows well and is designed for an audience familiar with science, but not equipped with all the jargon various specialists sometime like to flaunt. Nice picture section in the back as well of species of birds and bird-dinosaurs rendered by some of the newer talent in paleo illustration. It's a shame that there is so much economic incentive for Chinese farmers to hastily excavate fossils that some valuable scientific information is lost and paleontologists have to be extra aware of possible fraud in doctoring some fossils.

Interesting book about some of the most important new ideas in paleontology and the overwhelming fossil evidence supporting these ideas. Virtually all paleontologist now believe that birds evolved from smaller, quick, carnivorous dinosaurs with feathers. These new understandings and the supporting evidence are extensively discussed here, including key fossil discoveries of the recent past. The author himself is a science writer rather than a scientist but he conducts extensive interviews with a number of key scientists in this field. This approach means that the book is both informed and highly readable. Also, the author notes the extensive and exciting feathered dinosaur discoveries in China.

While none of the info contained in the book was new for me, it was still a great summary of current theories and findings surrounding dinosaurs. Evolutionists, read to your heart's content. Mr. Pickrell does a fine job detailing the theory of birds with feathers as it grew from a theory with niche support in the 80s/90s to a fully support from the paleontologist community. He also provides history into the finds and what it now means for so-called bone poachers who steal into sites and sell the finds for high prices. His highlights of certain scientists and what they brought to the field add some weight and provide background to his narrative. The full-color photos in the middle are also amazing and allowed me to place dinosaurs within his narrative when he mentions them.

Such a great book! I'm amazed at how wrong our teachings were in school, even though so much was known at that time. This is a fun, easy to read, very well-written historical adventure through the strange and scandalous world of paleontology, and the attempts to silence the long-known truth that birds evolved from dinosaurs. It makes me wonder how long the rest of the world will pretend dinosaurs were naked as leather handbags! When will someone be brave enough to put feathers on them in a feature film? We've been lied to long enough, time show the world what the dinosaurs really looked like!

There has been a great deal new learned by archaeologists in last 25 years, and certainly since I was in school. This book is written for casual readers and summarizes the story of dinosaurs and birds as scientist has reconstructed the fossil record. In addition, new scientific study techniques are explained, techniques that allow scientists to draw conclusions from the minutest of details. Archaeology is not just about big bones hidden in the dessert, any more. It is a fun read.

Excellent overview of the many exciting and fascinating discoveries of feathered dinosaurs. After reading this book, only the simpleton would still deny the firm connection between the Maniraptor dinosaurs and modern day Avian ones.

Now I understand why snake tastes just like chicken, chickens are reptiles, too! Birds may be cousins of T-Rex, but they sure are cute.

This book kept me riveted. I could hardly wait to get to the end so I could see the illustrations, which are beautiful. I recommend this book to the average reader, as all scientific names are explained and pronunciations given.

This is a wonderful book! The idea of learning to skate might seem overwhelming to an adult beginner, but Ms. Levy breaks down the process into clear and manageable steps. Adult Figure Skating 101: Ready, set, glide...is a great learning tool for the complete newcomer to skating, as well as a valuable reference for those who have already begun the process. Highly Recommended!

This is one of those books that most new adult skaters will get something out of. Depending on the specific skill being taught, its descriptions and illustrations are either adequate or lacking. Someone who uses this text to augment online video tutorials will likely find it very useful. Indeed, this is one of the better books for people who are unable to comprehend highly detailed written instructions. The basic information about skates, safety and rink layout is perfect for those folks. The area in which this book shines above others is in the initial pep talk for beginners. Ms Levy ably explains away all the common excuses that hold beginners back. Probably the strongest criticism of this book is that it is possibly too optimistic in what it tries to accomplish in 107 pages. The more complex spins and jumps probably deserve more attention than they receive. Perhaps by including so many advanced skills this book will serve as encouragement to push readers harder and seek more information and instruction. Please understand that this is an unintimidating and worthwhile book that most new skaters will benefit from reading.

It only contains basic descriptions of the elements, but misses key information on how to make them work. Very disappointing!

The book is concise and well illustrated. I am an adult student who started ice skating in mid 40s. This book shows me what I have to learn as an adult student who are not planning to compete in the Olympics.

This book is practical and well organized and has tons of great maps in it. Jordan was my favorite travel experience out of the 12 countries I've visited.I just got back from a nine day trip in Jordan. My friend and I went to Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Amman, Madaba, Umm Qais, Jerash, and Ajlun. This guidebook is so accurate and thorough - it made the trip a breeze. The section on language was a blessing, including the great section on foods and drinks in Jordan. All the cultural tips were helpful and accurate (girls AND guys - cover your legs and arms like the locals!), and the extensive sections on the history of Jordan and Petra were insightful. Many prices have increased since this was published. For example, entry visa is now JD20 instead of JD10 (about $28). But overall, travel in Jordan is cheaper than travel in America, and much cheaper than travel Europe. There's also info in here for booking a tour with a company, probably a lot easier than connecting the dots yourself like we did.I would add a few tips that I didn't see in the book: be aware that many vendors won't have change for large bills, so always have some 1s and 5s with you. Also, in the book, some of the information about buses was misleading; we got stuck at the dead sea at 4pm on a Saturday with no buses in sight, contrary to the impression we got from the guidebook. However, EVERYONE in Jordan is so helpful, and we were able to hitch a ride back to West Amman with a tour group, and then the tour guide drove in his own car us back to our hotel in downtown Amman. If you're going to be taking buses, check with the staff at your hotel to confirm what the guidebook recommends. Every other bus we took was fine though. In Amman, we took private taxis to the bus stations instead of the white, shared cabs. It was not very expensive, and was less stressful than trying to figure out the stops/routes of the shared cabs. In general, buses run more in the morning than in the afternoon or evening. My friend and I are active hikers from Colorado, and we loved Petra and Wadi Rum most of all. The stars at night in Wadi Rum made the whole trip for me - breathtaking. In both these places, the more you can walk in a day, the more you'll see, so make sure you're in shape before you go, and bring good shoes and thick socks. I'd say ideally you need three days in Petra; we had two FULL days of hiking and didn't see it all. We did the night tour of Petra, which honestly I wouldn't do again (search google images for "petra night" and you'll get the idea). After a full day of hiking, walking all the way back into Petra in the cold night wasn't fun, and when the group arrived at the treasury, everyone's camera flashes really killed the vibe. Petra is filled with vendors who sell trinkets VERY aggressively, so brace yourself for constant offers of donkey and camel rides and cheap jewelry.Traveling in the Middle East takes more preparation than Europe. If you're thinking about going to Jordan, get this guide book and read it months before you go; you'll be glad you did. I'd also recommend getting some free Arabic podcasts off itunes. My favorite was a small series by the Peace Corps for volunteers in Jordan. It had all the important phrases, and with Jordanian dialect and accent. Watch out for Arabic podcasts geared towards Morocco; the language is very different there. I also read the books "Married to a Bedouin" and "Live from Jordan" before I went. Both great books that informed my view of the country and it's people.A tip: from downtown Amman, you can hike up the hill (stairs between houses) to the Citadel and sneak in without paying at the entrance. The views at the top are killer, and it's fun to see the ancient ruins juxtaposed with the bustling city. Also, locals hang out up there in the evening (it's probably the only parkland/open-space in that part of town). We ended up there at sunset and all around us were locals, kids playing soccer, women picnicking, families taking photos. We felt so special to be up there; we were the only tourists around.I cannot say enough how kind people were to us. Everywhere we went people offered us tea. I got a haircut one day in Madaba, and they insisted I not pay and brought us tea and gave us bread and nuts and we hung out - such a memory. One of our favorite drinks was "lemon juice" with mint mixed in. So good! Many menus were in English, and most service industry folks knew enough english to help us out.My personal recommendations, in order: Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jerash. I'd say plan a few days for Petra and a few for Wadi Rum. Plan on half a day for the Dead Sea, most of a day for Jerash (eat at the Lebanese house! So good!). Amman is a hectic city. My friend and I loved it, but many casual travelers hate it. The guidebook suggests basing yourself in Madaba if you want a more mellow time. besides, it's closer to the airport than Amman. The three hotels we stayed at, which I recommend: Burj al Arab in Amman, Cleopetra in Wadi Musa (Petra), Mariam in Madaba. Our guide in Wadi Rum was Mzied Atieg; he was awesome.Another great thing about our trip: we met many wonderful travelers from Europe and America. Being in such a special place, travelers were very open to spending time with us and talking about their travels. We met such wonderful folks, and we compared notes about where we'd stayed, what we'd done, what else we were going to do on our trip.In conclusion, if you're thinking about traveling to Jordan, get this book!I would add; check current news in Jordan before committing to visit. Two protestors died in Amman the day we left. Sobering and scary. However, in our travels we encountered no troubles or tension, and everyone was kind to us, and they continued to be kind to us after we told them we were from America. Most Jordanians don't like American foreign policy, but they like Americans just fine.

I bought this just prior to my trip to Jordan in May 2015. I found it extremely reliable with respect to all the normal tourist areas from the Syrian border to the Red Sea. My son and I covered them all on our own driving a rental car . Next to my GPS this was the most valuable asset I had. When I wanted to know where to park my car at the Allenby Bridge so I could do a one day trip to Jerusalem he told me .When I wanted to explore out of the way tells and see where the Moabite Stela was discovered all I needed to do was " look in the book". My 8 days driving the length of Jordan was made relatively easy thanks to the info provided in this thin volume. Incidentally tourism is down 60% . We were the only americans we saw the entire time we were there and the people were uniformly happy to see us .Go . Go now

I must admit that I am new to using a Kindle and this was my first go at using a travel guide that wasn't a paperback. With more experience at using the Kindle I might change my mind, but it was often a problem going between information and maps. The maps were also difficult to read when I tried enlarging them. However, the information about places was good and we were happy with the restaurants recommended by the guide. I would recommend having a separate, paper map as back-up if you are driving as we were. I would also like to strongly suggest that, if you have the time, follow Matthew's advice and spend a few days at Feynan Ecolodge - even with unexpected rain it was one of the best things we did!

Even though it is about 14 years old, the explicit description of the sites were very helpful since we travelled independently. Not much has changed except prices have doubled. The history and political chapters were very helpful.

If you read the 21 reviews listed for this guide, know that only 9 pertain to this edition. After know that know that this 2012 edition was researched in 2010/11 which was before the Syrian refugee crisis. An event that has serious changed Jordan. Now, as I write this review there are over 500 hundred thousand desperate refugees from Syrian seeking hope and home in this small (and getting smaller country). I work in medicine and one Jordan doctor told me that the government figure of 450,000 Syria Refugees are kept low to not disturb the Jordanians .... he said really there are double those number in Jordan. I tell you that because this book describes what Jordan was like in 2011 but not what it is today. For example, in the book, in the Ajloun sections, it states that "Northern Jordan's verdant hills are cut through by countless lush valleys..." I was just there and it is gone... all gone, sorry. What I am seeing is construction everywhere and very tacky construction at that - the cement block buildings with zero personality...places to hold people... but definitely no more lush valleys. That said, this can be a good guide if you stay on proven tourist routes "Petra, Dead Sea, Jerash, etc" then you will benefit from this Rough Guide. The write is a good write, Matthew Teller, and I do hope he comes out soon with the 6th edition.

While the detail is extensive, Kindle compatibility is lacking (as usual). The maps are illegible on my 1.5 y.o. Kindle; zooming only expands the text not images. I also was unable to get the text search function to work. Freebie pdf viewer software provides a better user experience. Come on Amazon/travel guide companies and get up to speed.

just returned from 2 weeks traveling in Jordan, used the latest edition.A precise guide, made the trip much easier and comfortable. The author made a fantastic job, I just do not understand how a single person was able to provide so much precise details.I rent a car, and can confirm that number of gas stations in Jordan is less than crusaders castles. The only thing, which may be I want to add, that if you are lucky to find one of those gas stations, please be aware, that local folks try to charge you pointing on the number of liters, which is about twice as much, as number in JD.

It started off interesting... the author draws you in... and then he creates this designer name sling shot that just keeps slinging couture names at you— to a point wear you just want to duck and cover just to get to the plot line... only to discover the plot line is very thin, like the fabric of (insert famous designer’s name here) latest collection. The ending was rushed- you could hear his agent yelling at him to finish the book already! Love rarely conquers all. One book was enough.

SynopsisRachel and Nick have been dating for a while and this summer he wants to take her to his home in Singapore for a friend’s wedding and to meet his family. While they think nothing of spending the summer traveling together, his family, who are “crazy rich” (seriously ridiculously rich) are worried that Nick is going to propose to someone who they have not vetted and is not from a “good” family.Review I started this book thinking it would be about a ton of stereotypes blah blah blah. And that it would be a fluff read – it would take me just a few days to get through a beach read. Alas, I was wrong, but in a good way. I was totally entertained and wanted to read more for multiple reasons. One, Kwan describes some of the houses/treasures of the homes so well that I could imagine just how they looked and it was amazing to be able to see this almost panoramic view of these people’s homes. Two, the characters were well written and entertaining. The only thing I had trouble with was keeping track of who all was who (and thus the family tree in the beginning of the book that I referred back to often once I had “met” so many people). I’m currently waiting for the next book (China Rich Girlfriend) to be available from my library. I totally wanted to roll right into book 2 but I’ll have to wait a bit.

4 Stars! This book is accurately titled. The characters in this book are ridiculously rich and they are just as ridiculously crazy. I read this as part of the #bigbookbuddyread on Instagram and we've been having a great time discussing topics that relate to our everyday lives!Rachel Chu is a successful woman in New York. She has a great education and she is in finance. She's also dating Nick Young who is also a successful guy in New York. Nick's family lives in Singapore and he decides now is the summer to take Rachel there to finally meet his family, plus it's his best friends wedding. He doesn't tell her anything, which may be a big mistake on his part or is it?They arrive in Singapore and Rachel is in for a big surprise. His family is filthy rich (i'm talking billions of dollars in wealth) and she had no idea. The story goes through Rachel's journey over the few weeks they are there and she is one tough cookie. Everything and everyone there only cares about status and family names. Rachel is an outsider so you can guess how they feel about her. Family members and friends put Rachel through the ringer and just when you think she may give up she learns a big family secret that changes her entire outlook. This book and it's characters are so extra (that's the term kids are using these days, right?!) They are so overdramatic and ridiculous that it makes this story that much juicier. I'm personally a reality TV junkie so the more drama and over the top the better. That is probably one of the reasons why I did enjoy this story. I also loved it because I enjoy hearing stories about people standing up for who they are and being proud of where they come from which is what Rachel does. Are you going to get a ton of depth and long burning questions out of this novel? No. But you will definitely get some entertainment! I also enjoy the secret story that the author put in at the end (you'll have to read to find out!). It really ties everything together and was a nice change from all the brutality that Rachel faced. It's true what they say, money changes people and I'll tell you that regardless of how much money they offered me I wouldn't want to be part of the Young's, I'll just continue reading about them instead. There are 2 other books in this series and I plan to read both of them! I need to find out what happens with Rachel and Nick and their families!Oh! And the movie for this is coming out in August and I hope it sticks close to the book. I will be going to see it in theaters!

I wanted to like this book. The premise was interesting, and I did enjoy learning something about a sub-culture about which I had known nothing. But I found there to be far too many hastily-drawn characters included in the story with no real purpose. I would have preferred the novel if it had focused on fewer characters but had really developed them. As it was, I found myself not really caring about any of them.

I found myself unable to finish this book. Nothing but page after page of food, clothing and snarky name dropping. After reading about 40 pages, the reader has actually read it all. Nothing but more of the same. The actual plot of the book moves at a snails pace. Wish I had read the negative reviews before ordering up this turkey.

This book held some geographical interest. The author obviously knows the area well. But all the designer labels and glorification of materialism grew tiresome to even read. I guess that was the point, but it became tedious and less interesting as the story progressed.

I really liked this book...until the end, which felt extremely abrupt and unsatisfying after all the interesting build up. I literally kept swiping my Kindle thinking, surely, there must be another chapter or two to wrap this story up? A cliffhanger? Something. Nope. It's like the author was intentionally trying to drag the story out to write the additional books, but he didn't set it up at the end in a way that made me want to keep going to read the next two books.
