The Guns of August is one of the worst history books ever written. B. Tuchman displays an arrogant and absolutely violent anti German bias in her examination of the war. This isn't history in any sense, it is pure propaganda. The Germans of WWI were not the Nazis of WWII. The Germans did not fight like beasts and they did not murder, torture or otherwise disobey the rules of warfare as understood at the time. No reputable author who has reviewed the war accuses the Germans of anything like the depravity Tuchman ascribes to them. Keegan, SLA Marshall and numerous other key historians simply do not report the war as Ms. Tuchman does because they do not swallow propaganda as truth. What Tuchman has done is adopt British propaganda, published during the war, as truth. In fact, what the English were reporting was pure fabrication set forth as an unbiased government study of German actions in Belgium.A truly worthless book that slants and taints history in the worst possible way. The author's motivations for such drivel cannot be known, but the fact that it is there is not disputable. Historians do, by the very fact that they are human, slant history to fit their unstated and often unexamined assumptions. But no historian should ever willfully bend the truth to fit his or her world view, or be so dumb as to not know they are doing it. The best historians strive to avoid bias, but openly admit that it is there. The key is making one's best effort to avoid it.If you really want to know about World War I read John Keegan. Save your time and money and avoid this trash.March 2013: I am updating this review to add several books on WWI that I think are very good,The Great War (West Point Military History)The West Point Military History Series The Great War, Strategies and Tactics of the First World War; excellent professional discussion of the combat; and West Point Atlas for the Great War: Strategies and Tactics Of The First World War (West Point Military History Series) this Atlas will allow the reader to understand the Great War and the movements of armies during the conflict as no other book can. Both these books are indispensable for anyone wanting to understand WWI. The Great War: A Combat History of the First World War The Great War by Peter Hart, published in 2013 this is an excellent description of how the combat evolved over the course of the war;Dreadnought, Dreadnaught by Massy is THE book for understanding the run up to WWI - a MUST read for those really interested in the war and the era that led up to the fighting. Anyone reading Dreadnaught will understand that it took years of missteps and poor leadership to trigger the war. The book is also a great read. The First World War Keegan's The First World War is an essential history for those interested in how the war came to be and how it was fought. Keegan is excellent in making observations concerning "the obvious" which isn't obvious at all until he points it out. The complete loss of communications with the troops after they went over the top for example, is brought out by Keegan, and few if any others, but explains so much about why combat on the Western front killed so many.Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour: Armistice Day, 1918 World War I and Its Violent Climax Persico's book the Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour is a must read to understand, or at least attempt to understand, the mentality of the leaders (generals) of WWI. It is a complete condemnation of the thinking process of the "leaders" sending men into battle in that era. If you have not read this book, you do not know WWI.There are many other worthwhile books on WWI. These are the best of them, I think. The Guns of August is among the worst of them, perhaps the worst.AD2
I fell in love with history at the age of 6 and excelled in it at school. One of my undergraduate majors was history and I spent a lot of time learning about the American Civil War and World War II. While I have a decent knowledge of World War I, it is a significant gap in my deep understanding of the 20th and 21st centuries.H.W. Brands is one of my favorite modern American historians. He has written excellent books on TR, Grant, and the collision between Truman and MacArthur. In an interview, he mentioned that he has tried to copy the writing style of Barbara Tuchman, for he views her "The Guns of August" as the finest history book written. I bought it based on that recommendation. This book was published in 1962. Ms. Tuchman is not a trained historian and does not have a PhD in the subject (neither did Gibbon or Churchill). It won the Pulitzer for non-fiction in 1962. Reading it 56 years after it was first published, I was absolutely blown away. While I don't want to fall victim to recency bias, it is clear to me that this is the finest piece on history by an American that I have ever read. Ms. Tuchman made extensive use of primary sources. She has an amazing grasp of the both micro and macro elements of the lead-up to and the first month of the war. Perhaps most significantly, she writes clearly and vividly. The book, despite having lots of information, is a breeze and a joy to read. It is fascinating.I am deeply embarrassed that it took me this long to discover and read this book. Truly remarkable.
“The Guns of August†has been called the book that saved the world. In the fall of 1962, looking at each other across the island of Cuba, the United States and the Soviet Union came nose to nose to pulling the trigger on a nuclear weapons war. United States Air Force U2 pilot Major Rudolf Anderson, USAF was shot down and killed. “Our guest has been up there for over an hour,†[Russian] Lieutenant General Stepan Grechko told a deputy. “I think we should give the order to shoot it down, as it is discovering our positions in depth.†With the commanding general, the only man authorized to order a surface-to-air missile launch, nowhere to be found, Grechko gave the order himself: “Destroy Target Number 33.†American Generals urged President Kennedy to order an attack on Cuba. The President said that one passage from Barbara Tuchman’s book gave him the courage to resist the pressure of his generals. “Your Majesty,†General Moltke said to the Kaiser, “it cannot be done†when the German army began its advance into Belgium and the Kaiser ordered Moltke to stop The trains are already in motion--and with that simple phrase, a war that took over 10 million lives was launched. I have read “Guns†several times over the years and I know how the story ends, yet I follow each decision as though it were now, each description as though it is happening, not has happened. It is an incredible story of horror, yet with examples of incredible courage. Her humor is able to shine through the darkness of the times with her characterizations of the Generals and Statesmen, Bethmann-Hollweg, “who means well feeblyâ€, British Field Marshall Sir John French, “who knows nothing at all about the subject†and most of these are simply quotations made by other participants. Her effort was tireless, her research masterful, and her writing brilliant. I work with soldiers in the recruiting group here and I have bought and given this book to several of the sergeants hoping that it will percolate upward. It’s a command decision book and anyone who would think about war should understand the true horror of war. Not only were soldiers injured, blinded, maimed and killed, but the general population was starved so much that the Germans called the time “the turnip winterâ€. No bombs fell on Berlin but Germans suffered gravely. Paris was almost reached by the German armies until German General Von Kluck made one strategic mistake and presented his flank to the retreating French army. Remember too, this deals only with August, only a single month of a war that was to last four years, and to be the trigger for the next war, World War II, in which 60 million lives were lost. I believe an entire semester course should be taught using this book, not just in college, but also in high school. One thing I should mention. I speak both German and French, and read in them, so it can be a challenge with some of the reports---but, don’t give up on it. Her writing still come through, loud and clear, and clairvoyant.Stephen Joe Payne

From the Inside Flap
"DOUGLAS ADAMS IS A TERRIFIC SATIRIST."--The Washington Post Book WorldFacing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons is a curious time to have a craving for tea. It could only happen to the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his curious comrades in arms as they hurtle across space powered by pure improbability--and desperately in search of a place to eat.Among Arthur's motley shipmates are Ford Prefect, a longtime friend and expert contributor to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the three-armed, two-headed ex-president of the galaxy; Tricia McMillan, a fellow Earth refugee who's gone native (her name is Trillian now); and Marvin, the moody android who suffers nothing and no one very gladly. Their destination? The ultimate hot spot for an evening of apocalyptic entertainment and fine dining, where the food (literally) speaks for itself. Will they make it? The answer: hard to say. But bear in mind that the Hitchhiker's Guide deleted the term "Future Perfect" from its pages, since it was discovered not to be!"What's such fun is how amusing the galaxy looks through Adams' sardonically silly eyes."--Detroit Free Press

This is a wonderful continuation of the first volume, The Hitchhiker 's Guide to the Galaxy. The ex-president of the Galaxy is now on a quest to meet the person who runs the universe but, thanks to improbability, he and his traveling companions are swung into an adventure the likes of which they couldn't have imagined. This is humor mixed with imaginative nonsense of the best sort and some food for thought, yes, at a restaurant. You have to have patience for philosophical gibberish set in hilarious tones, but that is half the fun. Once you meet the ruler of the universe, you'll find it explains a lot.Warning: don't read this while sipping tea or any other beverage. It will shot out of your nose when you start laughing.
The "Restaurant At The End Of The Universe" is the sequel to the epic "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" and the adventure and wackiness ensues once more as Arthur Dent(human), Ford Precept(from Betelguise), Trillion the "Heart Of Golds" co Captain and the ex President of the Galaxy Zaphod, and of course there's Marvin the depressed robot. Absurd situations lead to laugh out loud hilarity, mostly from Marvin who has a bigger role in this tale. And now the question is "What is number 42?". The answer is somewhere inside the head of Arthur, however nobody seems to have the answer yet, although maybe a certain robot does? The book can only be described as pure fun for anyone. The book starts right where the first left off. They just want a little bite to eat is all, is that too much to ask?, apparently so. The Heart Of Golds improbability drive does not work and a mysterious man from Zaphod's past is their only hope. Whereupon the crew of the ship gets separated from each other. Arthur and Ford find themselves on a another planet and must find a way to escape. They steal a very important ship that belong to the galaxies number one rock band "Disaster Area". When Arthur and Ford teleport and find themselves on a Golgafrinchen Ship which crash lands on prehistoric Earth with a bunch of mumbling idiots, even Arthur trying to teach them Scrabble doesn't help with the ultimate question. And what about Zaphod, he may find out something of himself he's not ready to accept. This is the second book of the Hicthhiker series and was published in 1980.
I did the Audiobook, and it is really really read well. The book of course is hilarious. If you have never read the series, read it in book form first. The audiobook is a great way to experience it again when gardening or jogging, the type of activity that does not require concentration.
This book should be read after the "The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", due to the fact that "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" starts where the previously mentioned book ends. That is, with the two survivors to the Earth's destruction, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect, traveling along Trillian, Marvin the robot and Zaphod Beeblebrox in the "Heart of gold", a stolen Improbability Drive ship.If you read this book, you will go along with our friends in their adventures, for example when they visit Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, or when they escape certain destruction in a stuntship used by rockstars. You will also learn the real meaning of "dying for a cup of tea", and have a chance to eat meat that wants to be eaten. Of course, Marvin will continue giving you lessons in pessimism, and Zaphod will go on being "so weird that he should be in movies".I liked this book, but I didn't love it nearly as much as "The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". What is more, "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" doesn't have a clear ending, and I find some fault in that. Of course, I am more than ready to read the next book in the series, but that is not the point. On the whole, I don't recommend "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" to those that haven't read "The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", due to the fact that they won't enjoy it so much. Notwithstanding that, I do recommend this book as entertaining reading material for those already addicted to Douglas Adams quirky sense of humour. It is not perfect, but it is more than good enough to enjoy :)Belen Alcat
This is a great book and a great author and I love all things Douglas AdamsHOWEVERI feel totally ripped off by this ridiculous Audible Kindle version.I have several of the other Audible Hitchhikers books from iTunes. They work great.I bought the Kindle add on version and I can not get it to work at all.I finally attempted to get a refund from the "Bought by mistake" (it sure was a mistake buying this) and it says I am not eligible to return it but does not say why.BE WARE THE AUDIBLE KINDLE ADD ON MAY JUST BE A WASTE OF MONEY FOR YOU TOO.
The sequel is just what you'd expect if you've read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Think about carrying forward all human foibles into the galaxy and that pretty much sums up the book. Parts were great (the restaurant is a place everyone should visit at least once in all eternity) but I found other parts of the book a bit slow. Marvin is certainly one of the best android characters of all time. Trillian pretty much gets left out of this book (sorry Zooey Deschanel, no reprise role for you).

I've traveled the globe with Lonely Planet as my guide for 25 years. My travel companion for the trip to Cambodia had only traveled first class for business his whole life, so this mode of travel was foreign to him. But after a week of screw ups based on him disregarding the book, he, too, was reciting the mantra, "What does Lonely Planet say?"So it was with surprise that some of the info in this book seemed like it was written sight unseen. Most particularly glaring was the gushing review of the country's largest waterfall, in Mondulkiri provence. Yes, it's enormous. But the road to get there is a spine twisting, skill crushing one hour with the reward of roaring waterfalls situated amongst what literally looks like a dump. Trash is prevalent all over Cambodia, as in every developing nation. But this was so bad, I wondered if it was possible to create a waterfall on a landfill. Run-down, dumpy, filthy, trashed. This was the only depressing and disappointing experience in Cambodia. It was a stop that would only be worth it if it were on the side of the road on the way to somewhere else. Unfortunately, these falls are not on the way to anywhere; they are a destination. And not worth even 10 minutes. The key to LP's success for more than a quarter century is in telling the truth. If the author had actually been to this site, he/she would not, in good conscience, been able to write such a glowing account.Likewise, the author(s) never let on that Mondulkiri is just now emerging as a travel destination. It was written up as it were established. Overall, a traveler loves nothing more than to stumble upon a fairly undiscovered destination. However, the fact that LP didn't call this out caused confusion for us. It wasn't until we realized that tourism has just gotten underway in earnest in the past 7 months that the experience we were having there started to make sense. Additionally, the guide book sent us on a wild goose chase to the WWF offices to try to arrange a trek. After a frustrating hunt for the office, we were met by the patient, but clearly tired-of-this-routine WWF employee who kindly informed us that they do not organize tours and that the only people who sought them out were readers of Lonely Planet…due to the inaccurate information in the guide book.Lonely Planet, your value is in your honesty and accuracy. When your readers start to wonder if you've actually been to the destination you have sent us to, you are no longer the trusted guide.
I only went to Siem Reap/Angkor and the stilt village about 1 hour away. So the review is about LP and these two places.I love LP because it's available for Kindle, unlike a lot of guides, and has generally good and useful information at quantity - though at the cost of mediocre maps and almost no photos.I found LP useful for the temples of Angkor Wat, as most of the temples had very limited to no written descriptions. LP tends to be outdated; even though they publish new editions, these tend to be a minimal update.Just a few small tips that LP didn't emphasize well enough: 1) there are a lot of ATMs all over Siem Reap. LP suggested that there were just a few, but basically they were every 50 meters. 2) You can do a lot in 3 tiring, busy days: Small circuit, Large Circuit, then out-of-city excursion. LP tends to overestimate the time you need for everything, and as I result I stayed 5.5 days in Siem Reap with what was in the end a trip that was a bit slow.As LP explained but I found absolutely impossible to believe, Cambodia uses two currencies simultaneously. Cambodian Riel for anything less than about 2 or 3 USD, and USD for anything more. All told, however, again, LP was useful for this trip though I can see why one could get by without it much more than other places I've been, as the temples are easy to visit by following the circuits (that every Tuk-Tuk driver knows and every map has marked out), and in general the tourism industry is very well run in the city/region.
I just got back from a 3-week trip to Cambodia, and I used Lonely Planet to guide me. I would say that I am a "flashpacker," which is someone who is between a backpacker and a luxury, rich tourist. When I was in my 20s, I backpacked a lot around Europe and Asia, but now that I am older in my 40s, I prefer to stay in mid-range priced hotels. I still, however, travel around with a backpack rather than a suitcase on wheels. The Lonely Planet Cambodia guide fit my style of traveling perfectly.Just a word of warning. Don't expect prices to be exactly the same as what is listed in Lonely Planet. Things change very quickly, especially prices, in this part of the world. Your best bet is to go online to confirm prices or just be flexible when you get to Cambodia. The section on Phnom Penh is very good. I think the book covers all the main tourist attractions very well. The section on Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields is good. Unfortunately, the documentary at Tuol Sleng is no longer being shown, and there is no information whether it will return. The section on hotels is perfect. I stayed in a hotel that was top-rated by Lonely Planet and it was the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The restaurant section is extensive, but restaurants are always closing and opening, so it's best to check tripadvisor for this. I ate at several restaurants listed in LP. I only wish they had fewer western restaurants listed and more Cambodian restaurants. Eating at local restaurants in the capital was very intimidating for me, and I don't think LP gave enough guidance on it.The sections on Siem Reap and Angkor Wat are brilliant! There are several very helpful maps on the temples and several tips on what order to see the temples in and when to see them. There is also a very detailed description of each of the numerous temples. I would suggest buying an extra guidebook on the temples.Unfortunately, the rest of the sections are not as good as the first two. The southern part, especially the islands, is not very comprehensive. I actually think that is probably because this part is changing sooooo fast. There isn't a good listing of hotels and restaurants. Another section that is not very good is the northeast. This part of the country is becoming THE place to travel especially for backpackers. There isn't a lot of information for mid-range travelers. Your best bet is to go online to find out the latest information about this region and about all the treks. LP downplays this region, so I was not planning on going there, but when I got there I heard so many good things about Mondulkiri that I changed my plans after I got there.A few things that are missing from LP is information on phones and technology. Bring a cheap flip phone with you in which you can use a local SIM card. Another thing that LP skimps on is the section on Cambodian food.I like that LP picks certain hotels and restaurants for their TOP-CHOICES. This is helpful, but it could be much more helpful if they did it for each of the 3 levels of prices: top, middle, and low. The hotels that they select for their top choices are usually out of my price range.I also like that they give itineraries for various lengths of travel--very helpful. They also do it for the major cities. This is a great guidebook, and I highly recommend using it. Pretty much most western travelers use this book.

Another jackpot from Jamie. Once again I'm hooked from the first page.Honestly, I was expecting a litte different on some aspects. But the story was even better. I laughed, I worried, I was angry and I cried. Yes, you will have lots of funny moments, but you need to be prepared for really heartbreaking ones too.Greer... I love that at the end he's still arrogant a-hole. That he didn't loose his charming self. Yes, that said with a little sarcasm. Lol. But we are introduced to his other side. Which I have no doubt will surprise you and will make you to love him, if you haven't before. Well, after all he's that good he can made blind woman to see. ;)Honestly, I'm not sure what you're doing here. Wasting your time, while you could already be cuddled comfortably and having a date with Greer.PS. While not one party would acknowledge it openly, I really love how close The Last Riders and Porters got as friends.
Jamie has brought back our favorite Porters. If you haven't read the other books, you can still read this, but it isn't going to make much sense. Without giving spoilers, Jamie was able to bring the characters to life and now I understand a lot more than I ever did when it came to the Porters. This should be on everyone's TBR!I cannot say enough about how Jamie makes us fall in love/hate or love or hate relationships with her characters. This is my favorite Porter. Greer is Greer. You either love him or you don't. There is no middle ground where he is concerned.
****SLIGHT SPOILER****Standing His Ground has blown me away. I knew it would be explosive because of the sparks this couple has thrown off since day one but man… It was SO. DAMN. GREAT. So much depth, all sorts of feels, such thoughtful storytelling… Definitely one of my favorite Jamie Begley books to date!Greer, Greer, Greer… I was already crushing on you before but now I am head over heels in love with you! You are #2 only to Cash in my book! You were sweet, charming, romantic, protective & clever but the most AMAZING part was that you were all of those things without losing your famous a****** persona. You were still you & that was straight-up sexy. But I am so sorry about what happens after you use your power… *zips lips*Holly, woman… LOVED what you & Diamond started! My heart broke for you with every insult & sneer that was slung your way but I admired the way you dealt with it all. You were so strong, caring & selfless. I loved your relationship with Logan & when you decided to go all in with Greer. You balanced each other out & it was beautiful & fun to see your story unfold. There were so many memorable scenes in this book! The house meeting, the ugly cry (OMG, I was devastated!), the way Greer took care of Diane & the conversation Greer had with Knox at the end were all definitely highlighted in my kindle but the very BEST ones were the out-of-body experience Holly & Greer felt in the field of daisies & the barn scene with the whole Porter family. The field scene gave me goosebumps; being so sexy, magical & meaningful. And that barn scene… I LOVED how therapeutic it was for EVERYONE.Have to admit… I was a bit irked that daisies were the flower of choice because I associate them with one of my least favorite characters, Bliss, & her daisy chain but I’m choosing to replace the bad memories with the good ones because Greer & Holly’s daisies were fantastic!Although it was hard to leave some loose ends lying around, I’m excited to find out how things are going to play out between the Porters, Hayeses, Colemans, Curt Dawkins & Luke Baxter in Claiming His Enemy. (At least I think they’re all linked together somehow because of events that happened in this book.) I feel lots of trouble brewing!Very much looking forward to the next installment in this massive Jamie Begley saga! Not sure if it’ll be Rider’s Revenge (the prologue of which was included at the end of this book) but I really hope it is! :)
Standing His Ground is Begley's book two in her Porter Brothers Trilogy. This is Greer and Holly's story and its my favorite in the Porter series. If you haves read the Last Riders or Tate's book you know how Greer and Holly feel for each other. Begley gives us the real Greer in this story and she does an amazing job showing the strengths and weaknesses of these characters. This is a laugh out loud, tear jerker story, which will leave you with a huge smile on your face. I loved watching Holly's character evolve, she finally has enough of Greer's mouth and starts putting him in his place. Begley gives us some of my favorite characters in this story Knox, Diamond, Rachel and Cash just to name a few. I love Begley's writing style because you never know where she is going to go with the storyline and it seems her characters are always up to something more behind the scenes. If you haven't jump into Jamie Begley's little world in Treepoint, I suggest you give it a go. You can start with Greer and The Porter's but I highly recommend starting at Razer book one of the Last Riders and following the reading order on the authors website. Happy Reading!!!!
