About the Author

Tradd Cotter is a microbiologist, professional mycologist, and organic gardener, who has been tissue culturing, collecting native fungi in the Southeast, and cultivating both commercially and experimentally for more than twenty-two years. In 1996 he founded Mushroom Mountain, which he owns and operates with his wife, Olga, to explore applications for mushrooms in various industries and currently maintains over 200 species of fungi for food production, mycoremediation of environmental pollutants, and natural alternatives to chemical pesticides. His primary interest is in low-tech and no-tech cultivation strategies so that anyone can grow mushrooms on just about anything, anywhere in the world. Mushroom Mountain is currently expanding to 42,000 square feet of laboratory and research space near Greenville, South Carolina, to accommodate commercial production, as well as mycoremediation projects. If you have ANY questions on how to grow mushrooms, this is THE book to get! While many books I've been reading have lightly touched on the subject, this masterpiece goes into so much detail and has such great photos and instructions, after reading it cover to cover, I immediately started earmarking trees for mushrooms growing and planning which varieties I'm going to order! Coming from a laboratory background (molecular biology/protein biochemistry), I am very impressed with his level of scientific detail and his skill at showing how even an amateur without lab experience can setup his/her own lab and do so sterile and cheaply! The best part about this book was his details on keeping your cultures going by using rolled up cardboard and plastic bags, it's brilliant! As much as I enjoyed Stamets' books, I found this one to be easier to read and more user-friendly.

This book is loaded with tons of excellent information and great photos and, I’m glad to have it. I will be growing mushrooms thanks to what I’ve read.Now for the heavy disappointment. I bought it because I LOVE and wanted to grow Morels.There is an entire chapter dedicated to Morels and this is pointed out in the description. There is a photograph, one of only five on the front cover, of fat, lovely Morels laid out in an attractive pattern. On the front cover, author Tradd Cotter has his name captured be illustrations of Morels on both sides. I think it’s safe to assume I’ve found the Holy Grail if Morel information. Not so.Let me summarize the Morel chapter for you: Morels are damn hard to grow and we really don’t know much about them. While not impossible to grow, it has not been achieved on a commercial level successfuly. Some times a few grow and other times none grow and we’re not sure why. It’s an ongoing study.There you have it. If you want to just grow some mushrooms, even some pretty exotic ones, this is indeed a very good book. ...but not for Morels. And, FYI, don’t get your hopes up. There isn’t any currently known way to grow Morels with consistent results. :-(

Great book, very informative, while not too instructional. It seems to speak more about the possibilities of farming and mycoremediation, without delving too deeply into the science behind it. Everything presented in a sort of "here is how it is, isn't it cool? Try it yourself sometime!" manner. Like a very informative pamphlet but not as in-depth as a text-book.Still good and informative and a lot of clever stuff in there.

A truly outstanding book that will teach everything needed to know with detailed color photos and hand drawn diagrams. Of course we all look forward to enjoying Shitakes, Oysters, Stropharias and Maitakes but let's face it... the one we really want to try our hand at is the Morel! The author devotes an entire chapter (21: Morel Cultivation and Research Update) to help navigate this complex subject which offers a great perspective complete with photos and diagrams for the best chance of success. Imagine being able to harvest fresh ingredients of extremely high culinary and monetary value sought after by chefs in upscale restaurants across the globe. The author does an excellent job of presenting the reader with many approaches to achieve the same goal for each mushroom variety, be it an inoculated log, stump or wood chips, compost, pasteurized media etc...

I've been lucky enough to hear Tradd speak in person a few times, and his lectures are always visually appealing, intellectually revealing, and completely inspiring. His book is more of the same --- which is to say awesome!I've been particularly wanting more information on rafts, totems, and propagating mushrooms on cardboard, and this book form of the lectures I'd attended didn't disappoint. In addition to providing step-by-step directions (with great diagrams and photos) on those topics, the text provided additional home-scale experiments that I'm itching to try, including propagating shiitakes using stacked rounds, raising oyster mushrooms on old clothes and coffee grounds, and producing homegrown morel spawn/microbe slurry for outside inoculation. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry --- the beginning of the book has great information to bring beginners up to speed.)The last third of the book consists of species-by-species cultivation accounts, and I'll save that for more intensive reading later. For now, this book is one of the few titles --- about three to five per year --- that contains such a breadth and depth of information that it merits a permanent place on my bookshelf.For those of you new to mushrooms, this is probably the book I'd recommend reading first. It's like a combination of the inspiring accounts of Mycelium Running with the hands-on information of Stamets' older text, but with a more homestead-scale appeal. But I should warn you that you'll need to commit serious time to reading Tradd's chapters slowly and in order since my initial skim was a bit disappointing --- raising more questions than it answered. Only after I read every word did the true wonder of the book gel together into a beautiful whole. So even if you're an intermediate mushroom growing, start with chapter one and prepare to be inspired!

I LOVE her writing! I laugh out loud at so many of her stories, most of which are self-effacing. She is both an American born and bred, and a newly adopted Bhutanese. I have come to have great affection for the people and land of Bhutan through her writings. But it's also given me the chance to reconsider some of my self-criticisms and to think how I might react if I were in Bhutan and not subjecting myself to our arbitrary American standards. Pretty thought-provoking stuff.But that's not why you should read it. You should read it because every page is a joy and every story worthwhile.

I love this book so much, am re-reading it right away, in case I missed a few sentences of its deliciousness. Linda Learning is a very human writer, and shares intimately how she feels as she describes the scenery and events in her life. I bought more of her books, and even purchased 3 extra copies of this one for sharing with friends.

Not a self-help book but a wonderful funny life story about the authors' experience transitioning to a completely different culture in Bhutan. I just wanted to keep reading this book. The author is full of wisdom, marvelously wry and a great storyteller. She's the girlfriend you want to go on vacation with because you know she will be great company and full of observations! This is the perfect beach book, or the one you want to read on your travels.

Charming book - more of a journal than a 'self-help' book. This is the first book I've read from this author, and I am impressed by her fun and often humorous take on Zen. This book could easily be read in a day, but I wanted to pace myself (and highlight many passages) because I enjoy reading her witty reflections on everyday life in Bhutan.

This is not exactly a sequel to Leaming's earlier memoir, Married to Bhutan, but it does cover the period following that book. And I wouldn't even go so far as to say it's not a memoir, but it's kind of 50:50, memoir:self-help. She uses anecdotes from her life In Bhutan and the USA to illustrate her 22 best pieces of advice for living a happier life. These are not earth-shattering ideas - in fact most if not all will have the reader nodding their head in agreement or recognition - but having them collected together in this highly readable package certainly makes them very accessible. Some of the tips are things like being kind, getting out into nature, eating well, compromise, and so on.I love Leaming's style; she's a very self-aware and self-deprecating, humorous writer, but she also knows when to dial it back. The chapter where she writes about the last days and death of her mother brought a lump to my throat, which had already had a workout from all the chuckling through the earlier chapters.

What a delightful descriptive narrative Linda Leaming provides on the predicament of being a Westerner who moves to the ancient remote Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan. Having been there myself to investigate the Gross National Happiness program being instituted by the King, it was a true treat to read her perspective on their culture. She writes with honesty and humor and I found every single page to be enjoyable!

I have been to Bhutan over 28 times since 1982 and both Linda Leaming's books give the reader a view inside the culture that would not be possible during a normal tourist visit. I recommend both of her books for anyone interested in this fascinating and complex country.

In all honesty I think "The Cenotes of the Riviera...," is only good as an overview of the cave diving in the Yucatan. If you are considering purchasing this book to actually find your way to the cenotes, especially the cenotes around Tulum, then save your money. As a general overview of the diving here in the Yucatan the book deserves two stars but as a guide I would only give the book one star. Here's why: First, the book needs an index. It's really hard to find information on a specific cenote because the reader must page through lists of locations to find the dive of interest. In at least one case, two cenotes located within one mile of one another are described in completely different parts of the book. Secondly, the directions offered are often incorrect including the coordinates and different directions to the same dive site are offered in the same description of the cenote. We have spent a lot of wasted time looking for dive sites based on the faulty directions found in Steve's book. Lastly, the writing needs significant editing.

I have Steve's previous book and have used it to entice people to join me on trips to Tulum area. I was actually very surprised when the new addition arrived. I figured it would just be an updated version maybe some newer pictures.This version is jam packed with information that must have taken years to assemble and put into a systematic encyclopedia of the cenotes, caves and history surrounding Rivera Maya. Even though I have been visiting the area for nearly 10 years I found lots of new places to dive and good intelligence on how to do. Information such as where to pick up the key or who is the acual land owner can be hard to come by for visitors. Stee has pulled back the curtain on local only knowledge and generously shared with us all.I have first hand knowledge of several places mentioned in the book, some only very recently opened to the public and all the information is spot on from my experiences.Once upon a time this knowledge would only come from hard work establishing relationships and possibly multiple rounds of tequila with the right people. Anyone from backpackers looking to snorkel in a pristine Cenote to hardcore visiting cave divers will benefit from bringing the guide along with them in their gear bag.Thanks for the obvious labor of love! You have created a follow up edition that manages to surpass the excellence of the original. A rare accomplishment.

Took it Mex last week and found only 1 out of the 3 caves I looked for. I did not find 27 steps (I think roads are no longer there) and Chicken Water - both are near Akumal. GPS coordinates appear wrong too (maybe my GPS was set wrong) - tried to verify coordinate on known cave and they were still way off.Book has amazing potential but Mr. Gerrard need to drive each cave and ensure the directions are correct; so much has changed in the Rivera audit keeps . I've dove many of the usual caves so once I leave the beaten path the directions need to be somewhat accurate for the book to be valuable.

Plenty of information, but not useful-- doesn't give you any idea of what most of the cenotes are actually like to visit. Historical information is certainly interesting, but there really isn't that much written about the physical features of each site-- in many cases, it doesn't even mention if the cenote is open to the sky or enclosed. Travel blogs have proven far more informative. Some of the information in this book is outdated (eg which spots offer equipment rentals or facilities on site). The images on the kindle version are poor and there is no way to access sections for particular areas from the table of contents-- you have to scroll through all of the pages of dive sites looking for the entry you need. God-awful book.

This is a very comprehensive book on diving and the excellent cenotes in this region of Mexico. As a newer diver with just over 75 dives, I have become enthralled with the challenge and beauty of cavern and eventually diving the caves in this region. I have dove a couple of cenotes with a guide, Dos Ojos and Taj Ma Ha and had an excellent time.I know I will use this guide as an invaluable reference guide as I begin my journey to cavern through full cave diver, exploring these bits of time held in stasis.Steve uses a very entertaining while informative style throughout his book that kept me engaged throughout.I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in this subject.

While very different from the "coffee table" style of the first edition, this book is wonderful in its own way: in its encyclopedic array of information about the water-filled caverns and caves -- and cenotes, of course -- of the Yucatan Peninsula. Steve's vast knowledge and years of experience in the area really shines through and if you're interested in snorkeling or cave diving in this area, you won't find any reference that even comes close to this. Highly recommended.

I received my copy of Steve's new book last week. It is a very comprehensive look at the cave systems of the Riviera Maya. I have been cave diving there for the past 15 years and found this book to be very informative. It is very different from his last guide book. There are not all the beautiful photos the last guide had. However is is a great guide to the caves of the region with information on many caves that were not even discovered when the last book was written. I highly recommend this guide for anyone who plans on traveling to the area or who just wants to learn more about the amazing caves that are there.

i do wish that the Kindle version was more searchable... ie that there was an appendix listing the cenotes so that one could quickly look them up- i recommend getting the paperback.

This is not the type of book you can sit down and just plow through. It's heady stuff, and often tended to make me feel sleepy. There are many types of intelligence in Diana Cooper's glorious universe (including dragons and unicorns) and I had a hard time keeping them all straight. Which ascended being helps with exactly which form of spiritual difficulty? Can I connect with the ninth dimension here in the third? I think I need a map or flash cards or something, because I feel like I'm being introduced to a whole new cosmology. When I finish this book -- probably next year, at the rate I am going -- I think I'll start over from the top and read it again.

For anyone who is advanced Spiritually, this is just the absolute best guided meditation. Diana Cooper and Tim Whild have the most fantastic voices, along with soothing music and the information is just so so important at this time. I'm assuming certain people are naturally drawn to this audio.

A wonderful, informative guide for those on a deeper path! There is lots of information to consider in these pages.Also, many meditations and visualizations that can open you to another realm and reality. I have a deep respectfor Diana and Tim, as they bring forth this information. <3

This is a life changing book for me. I had gotten the earlier book Archangel guide to Ascension from the library and it blew my mind. I knew I wanted to own this one so I bought it to keep. Every chapter comes with a meditation. These two books teach about the frequency changes that are going on right now in the world, started in 1987 and coming to fruition in 2032 with the help of Archangels, angels, ascended masters like Jesus and Quan Yin, dragons, unicorns, elementals of all kinds, folk from other stars and Atlantis. I also got the accompanying guided meditation CD from Audible and I play it on my phone with one ear bud throughout the day.

Very helpful to remind us what going on during shift from third to fifth dimensional and valuation.
