Worthwhile read on an important topic, but academically presented as a series of phenomena. Not directly actionable, but remaining as anecdotal possibilities. I suspect that this is addressed in later writings by author. This book is not the best to read first in order get an introduction to her work.

For you lovers of Jon Kabat-Zinn and MBSR, you may want to forgo this approach toward mindfulness. It's not self-help, not a guide, not a set of tenets or steps. But, Langer is a Harvard research psychologist who has been working in this field a long time and who has taken the topic in important and interesting directions that are different from MBSR. I am involved in both psychology and mindfulness, teaching both at the college level. If, however, you happen to be open minded, intelligent and curious in understanding the logic of our psyches, this is a good read. It's not clinical, but also not written for dummies. Great book, glad I found it becasue Langer's work is informing my own now.

I really liked this book. It differs mindfulness from some of the Oriental meditation techniques that are very similar. One of the challenges of dealing with the world today is that there is a great deal of pressure to focus on the past or the future. Being mindful of the here and now is a great skill to broaden perspective and focus on the things that we have control of. The book is not particularly good at teaching specific exercises for mindfulness but I think that this is not its intention. It does a great job of explaining what mindfulness is as well as its benefits. If you're interested in learning about this practice this would be a good start.

I can honestly say that, in many ways, this is one of the most important -- and life changing -- books I have ever read. I am giving it 5 stars as an overall review because of the significance of the message, even though I think the book could have used a more heavy-handed editor.I became familiar with Langer's work only through articles that appeared occasionally in the New York Times. I am guilty of thinking, often, that any person featured there is the very best __________ (fill in the blank). I am often disappointed. But not this time.I have been an on and off (with long periods of off) meditator for 20 years, and I can say with certainty: 1. I never liked it 2. I found this book to be infinitely more helpful with regard to catching my own self defeating patterns.While this isn't a how-to book, and it doesn't include a list of steps towards Langer's definition of mindfulness (which I should mention is different from Buddhism's in many ways), I immediately learned life-changing strategies for coping with every day stress; I also realized that some of the things in the book, I already do, which offered some insight into why I am resilient in some ways and not in others. To wit, I saw my own psychological traps. This book makes you see the whole world differently, in fact, and I don't think that is an exaggeration.My criticism of the book lies in the descriptions of some of the experiments, which are boring at best but some of them I just could not comprehend how the conclusions were drawn. A lot of these experiments just didn't make sense to me, and I would have preferred that the methodology only be included in footnotes, not the actual body of the book. In my opinion, the book would be far more interesting to hear Langer expound upon her theories and insights from her research.Overall, however, this is a phenomenal work, and I cannot imagine that the information here would not be beneficial to everyone, regardless of life stage -- very old or young or some place in between.

This was recommended to me by someone who is studying psychology. I found Dr. Langer's studies to be quite remarkable. Very interesting subject matter. She has discovered the fountain of youth! It's all about controlling your brain.

I read this book in its first edition and found it so helpful, I have applied it to my life ever since. Today mindfulness is much more well known. She spells it out without the religious connection. It works! Try it!
