I'm a runner, and I've read all of Dean's books. His "Ultramarathon Man" inspired me to begin running my birthday number, starting with 48, and just finishing my 56th birthday. I also ran the Athen's marathon in 2010, the 2500th anniversary of Pheidippides' original run, which was a very emotional and wonderful event. So this book was a beautiful and inspiring account of Dean's return to his homeland, written with the descriptions and emotion that only distance runners understand. He did a masterful job of weaving the history and the running philosophy together into a book that I really didn't want to finish (I read slower towards the end just to prolong it). I don't write many reviews, and I'm not exaggerating here, that this was one of my favorite books ever, and the best of Dean's writings, in my opinion.
This book is Dean's reflection back into his greek roots, and the very roots of marathon running and beyond.He digs into histories of Greece, his family and famous last few days of the father of marathon - Pheidippides.Yes, he does describe his run in the famous Sparthatlon, but differently than other races in his other books.It's all in the light of all of those subjects.I loved it.... but I'm in my forties and I "feel" what Dean is talking about.Younger readers looking for a quick-and-easy story might find the book on a "slower side"...
This book is such a treat because it's about love, courage, Greece and history all weaving in and out of his experience at the Spartathlon. I laughed out loud pretty hard in a few places. Plus, you have to respect a guy who can run an ultra (and this one isn't your regular 100 mile ultra) on the ancient diet of fruit and water. As always, his stories inspire me to achieve "aristeia" or "personal bestness." Thank you Dean. Please never stop having epic adventures and sharing them with us.
Once again, Mr. Karnazes has beautifully written a book that invites the reader to participate in his journey. As "Karno" describes his lifetime fascination with all things Greek, he begins to discover himself. This leads him take on a challenge unlike any other. As he vividly describes the scenery, you feel as though you are running with him on this journey. After having read all of his previous books, I have to say that this is the best one yet!
Another great book by Dean. I love the way he tells stories. This book talking about the whole history of Pheidippides and his journey before the legendary run to Marathon was so interesting. From a history standpoint I learned so much about ancient Greece and the battles with Persia. As I was reading about his run to Sparta I found myself wanting to lace up my sneakers and get out running. A very compelling read.
The last chapters are the best any runner could find for inspiration. Dean has opened his soul and taught us a lot about running and the quest for a full life. Overwritten? By that I mean he could have dropped many adjectives in the descriptive passages, and improved on the dialogue. But his heart is true and I came away ready to lace up again!
Dean Karnazes has done it again. He combines the search for his ancestral roots with some Greek history, and weaves it all into a story about a famous footrace. In many ways it is like "Born to Run" meets "Natural Born Heroes". Of course Dean Karnazes has his own particular style and what really comes through in this book is his connection to his Greek heritage as well as the Greek people. An amazing story that was hard to put down.
If you are a runner, you will not be able to put this down. You will feel every step Dean takes, as he takes on this challenge of the Spartathalon. His telling of the history of Phidipides and the battle of Marathon grips. His embracing his Greekness warms. Opa! Mr. Karnazes, Bravo.

While the following review may be critical, I have to say I love this woman! I saw her in an interview and was very interested in reading her book. She’s still very new to all of this. I should give this book a poor review. But, alas, I just can’t. Much can be forgiven for her youth and fervor.She is convinced she’s the only one out there with this gift. Or handling this sort of work. Things would be significantly better for her if she’d research. There’s an entire branch of Catholicism called Charismatic Renewal doing just what she’s doing. There are special masses for healing. Many faiths are involved in healing and deliverance. I would dearly love to tell her to find a Byzantine Catholic church to recharge her batteries in.She is 38, yet the book reads like it was written by a pre-teen. It’s repetitive, and often contradictory. I don’t think she’s lying. People like us have to interpret messages, which seems to make us very creative people. If you’re looking for something intelligent and articulate, pass on this book. If you need bubblegum for the brain, enjoy! If you’re gifted and feel like you’re the only one, buy this book. It’s humorous and uplifting. You are NOT alone! Then hit the library.She calls herself a non-denominational exorcist. What she’s doing is not exorcism. She’s not working with demons. Like so many others trying to make a name for themselves in the field of paranormal, she probably grabbed on to the term “exorcist†for its mystique. She is working with lesser malignant entities, but nothing demonic. In order to be non-denominational – you have to have a faith foundation. She has none.Her lack of knowledge about genuine exorcism has left her highly critical of Catholic priests. Straight up ignorance on her part. Not all priests have an exorcist’s knowledge of demons and/or demonic activities. They gather information in order to refer a person to a trained exorcist. I read her criticisms and just wanted to hug her. Honey let me help…Due to our shaky moral ground, the need for exorcism is on the rise. Back in the 90s, Pope John Paul II demanded that each diocese have an exorcist. The Church even went so far as to launch “exorcism school, which now has a waiting list.†But it’s a long slow climb. In 1998, America had 9 exorcists. By 2015 we had nearly 300. But that’s still not enough.While it’s generally true that priests do not see the disincarnate, I personally know 3 Catholic exorcists and one ordained non-denominational exorcist who use laity with the gift of discernment of spirits. As I said, she’s far from the only one.All that being said, she is the genuine article. She is without a doubt an “eclectic healer.†An eclectic uses the trappings of many faiths or traditions to a singular end.Her belief that she “destroys†these entities is also ignorant. Dangerously ignorant. Science dictates that energy cannot be destroyed. Spirit is energy. Unless you understand how to send these entities back to their origin, or teach a person how to protect themselves, attachments can and do return. Very often with “friends.â€She speaks of higher beings coming to assist her, such as Buddha, Mohammed, and Jesus. Here I get red flags. She describes Buddha as a fat jolly fellow. It’s a common America misconception that Buddha is a deity worshipped by Buddhists. The goal of Buddhism is to attain enlightenment (buddhahood) and thereby break the cycle of reincarnation (karma). There are many who attained buddhahood. The most well-known being Siddhartha. Based on her description, the spirit she refers to walked this earth as a monk named Bo Dai. He lived a life similar to Francis of Assisi. He is not a deity. As Francis of Assisi is beloved of all Christians, Bo Dai is beloved by Buddhists, thus depicted often in statuary. Mohammed is not divine. Muslims do not worship him. He’s just a man who founded a religion. Like George Fox who founded the Society of Friends (aka Quakers). We must test the spirit. Always.Jesus is divine. Jesus is a “higher being.†She contradicts herself about him several times. Do I believe Jesus appears to her? I most certainly do! God does not reserve his assistance for Christians. It breaks my heart that so many believe it so.She states she’s never encountered Satan. Satan is not a name. Lucifer isn’t his name either. It means “light bringer,†described as the most beautiful of God’s archangels. I know his true name. If she were actually dealing with demons, she’d know it too. I’m sure he’s appeared to her in some form, and fooled her.Lilith is not a Hebrew goddess, as described in this book. There is a lot of misinformation on the net about Lilith. Most stemming from a satire, not historical text. Actual Hebrew text dictates “lilit†as a night creature. Other ancient texts (Babylonian, Sumerian, Assyrian) dictate that the lilitu are a class of lesser demons. Some creature appears to her in a familiar guise. We must test the spirit.There is truth to what she says about the core. It is where the divine resides within us. The place where malignant entities seek to attach and feed. This is where she works her healing. She needs to familiarize herself with other ways healing occurs in the core. For instance some years the Julian and Gregorian calendars align and Holy Week happens for more than 2 billion people at the same time. With all those people in prayer and supplication for an entire week - spontaneous deliverance and healing is abundant. Prime time for her to work on The Cecil.She desperately needs to read up on the entities she’s dealing with. There is so much ancient wisdom she can tap into if she’d just pick up a book. She regularly contradicts herself on how she describes these entities. Again, I don’t think she’s lying. I think she’s struggling and interpreting things. She needs to drop the arrogance and study. She laughingly comments about genies stating they don’t exist. They most certainly do. The Disney concept of genies has a foundation in truth. Genie derives from the Arabic word Jinn, an entity slightly lower on the spiritual food chain than angels. They wreak havoc and definitely take up residence in people.She talks about how these things look as well as their age, size and gender. Spirit has no gender, no real form, size is irrelevant and it does not age. Though they may manifest with such an appearance, she needs to know this is just “smoke and mirrors.â€It was SO refreshing to read her statement that sage has zero influence on entities. Proof positive she’s the genuine article. My eyeballs hurt from all the times I’ve had to roll them when some fool spouts off about burning sage to chase off negative entities. It works to clear negative “energy.†Not negative entities. There is a difference.It pains me that she has no manner in which to keep these things out of her home. Again, if she’d just pick up a book, find a teacher, or a veteran group. She also misunderstands why they visit her. They aren’t curious about her. They are drawn to her light. She’s not a Sister of the Darkness. She’s a Child of the Light.

Now it is my destiny to help others. I am the chosen one. I see hundreds of thousands of entities. But more on that later. I had a terrible childhood and my mom didn't love me. Once, in middle school, a girl stopped being my friend. My life is so painful because I am practically a modern-day Mother Theresa. Once, I went to the nurse and noticed another boy was sick, and I felt horrible. See? I'm so selfless it hurts. But I'll get to that point later. I know so many famous people in Hollywood - but I'll thinly veil my bragging my telling you I want to protect the celebs' privacy. I'll get to that later in the book. I'm really special. I've never met anyone as special, selfless, damaged as me. But we'll get to that a little later on."
I'm not sure if I'm the target audience in terms of spirituality and whether I believe in entities, but this book was the closest thing I've read that has made me think twice. It's also incredibly entertaining and R.H. has such a funny way of describing the crazy world that she inhabits. Fun read for everyone!!
Although the claims she makes in this book line up with historical claims of entities you can glean from various world religions and spiritualists, her tone through the entire book is very self-inflated. I do not know why she feels the need to assert over and over again that she is the ONLY ONE in the world who can remove these troublesome entities. At times, I felt as though I was reading a wordy business pitch. Towards the end, she started to sound like a New Age blog, and found myself skimming instead of reading.I suggest buying the kindle version and seeing for yourself. I wouldn't buy a hard copy, if I were you. But that's just me, this could be your cup of tea!
A one-of-a-kind non-religious metaphysical book about a woman who actually destroys demons. I was amazed at what a convincing read it was. Rh Stavis has been able to see "astral entities" since childhood which latch onto humans like parasites. What the demons get out of it is not exactly clear, but apparently the demons feed off emotions, but how emotions could be sustenance is not clear. RH however is very believable in her convictions and gives plenty of extremely specific and very believable details about how she learned to identify and get rid of demons who are attached to people.There were some parallels to Monroe's JOURNEYS OUT OF THE BODY and FAR JOURNEYS regarding the parasitic creatures he described in the astral world. But Stavis' story was completely different and more compelling, since she was learning how to help people with her gifts, while facing the most incredible creatures imaginable. A fascinating, entertaining read which makes you doubt the underpinning of our visible world, and makes you want to experience the strange parallel worlds that Stavis describes.Five stars. Excellent on every level and leaves a yearning in your heart to have a deeper understanding of our reality.

I bought this for my 13 yo. son to help with his science fair project. He was doing AI tic-tac-toe. He didn't know any Javascript. He read through the book and completed task/example step by step. He thought it was cool enough to want to show his mom everything he did (thanks for making me cool again). He's good with computers and he's a smart kid. That being said, he didn't think that book was "dummy-downed" or too over his head.
Our Grandson loved this as well as his father. For an 11 year old it is spot on and very age appropriate.

I was happy to find this Harry Potter kit recently. I was a bit surprised to find out how small these were (given the size listed in the description.) I think that the larger dimensions must refer to the cardboard box when it is fully open, as the cards are much smaller. I'll provide details on the components below. The designs are very small with detailed coloring elements. I suggest only small nib coloring medium with this kit.I consider it a fun kit for any Harry Potter fan. They remind me of exchangeable cards that have been popular over the years. I used only the included pencils on my first project and I used each one of them at least once. I found that the pencils went on very light. So light, I had to layer multiple coats of light blue and light green for them to show up at all. I think a kid could have fun with the kit as is but for me, I will use other coloring medium for the rest of the cards.I will provide details about the physical kit below, but here is a quick overview of what I found:30 Harry Potter designs in playing card sizePrinted on one side with high glossy backCardboard box holds entire set folds open and closes with magnetTwo folding magnetic “frames†for holding finished artworkAlcohol and water based markers and India ink pen did not bleed throughGel pens did not bleed through but some required extra drying timeColoring pencils did well but no room for blending in minute detailsThe kit contains 30 design cards which are mostly character cards and measure 3 3/8 x 2 7/16 inches. The cards have the appearance of playing cards with a matte front and a high glossy coated decorated back.There are ten colored pencils in the kit: medium brown, pink, red, orange, yellow, light green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, and purple. The pencils work and keep a nice sharp point but they are small and the colors are limited. They go on very light as I would expect from an inexpensive set of pencils.There are two folding magnet frames. Cute but again, inexpensive. They do nicely for holding a picture on the front of the refrigerator or on a locker – anything that a magnet will stick to.I test my coloring items with various coloring medium (which I will list in the comments section below.) While I tested them all, I really recommend only mediums that have or can be sharpened to a sharp point (such as Uni-ball Signo gel pens, various ultra-fine markers, and hard lead pencils.Here are the results of my tests:None of my coloring mediums bleed through this card. I thought perhaps alcohol-based markers would show on the backside of the card but be held in place by the glossy finish, but no, they did not bleed through. All gel pens with the exception of Uni-ball Signo pens needed extra drying time. Pencils went on well and could blend but honestly, there is very little room for blending on these cards. I like the way my Verithins worked – with good color and sharp lines.
Very clever product. Nice packaging. And plenty of content, but as the first review states: have another medium of color to use. The colored pencils the kit comes with simply aren't durable enough to hold up to the card stock the images are printed on.Otherwise, a great product.
The first review does a great job of explaining the kit much better than I could so I will only tell you my issue with it. Most of the images are from the last movie. That makes them all pretty detailed and also a bit boring. How many times do I want to color Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the same kind of clothes?? They do include the house shields and some creatures. I guess I was hoping it would be a nice compilation of all 7 movies, creatures, and places. There are only two actual images of Harry from one of the early movies. The rest are all from Deathly Hallows as far as I can tell. It's a cute kit but with the high detail in the tiny images, I can't put the extra one I bought in a little ones stocking. It's definitely a set for older kids and up. 8+ I'd say though it is possible a younger fan might like it too.
This very cute set was a bit smaller than I expected but nonetheless it's a nice little collectable. The packaging is quite interesting with the magnetic box which opens up into a package similar to the old life saver books, but 100% better construction. It includes 2 folding magnetic frames, the cards are short set of coloring pencils. I'm still happy with the purchase and would do it again. I've got all of the full size coloring books and if I want more detailed pictures to color I will pull one of them out. I think this is well suited for any real collector or child that loves Harry Potter. Matter of fact, if you are taking your Harry Potter fan out and will need to keep them occupied I think this is perfect. I haven't decided if I'll color my cards yet but I've picked out a couple that I really like.
This little coloring set is adorable and lots of fun!I didn't use the pencils as I already have a lot of adult coloring supplies, but the cards themselves are thick and good quality, great for use with markers and pretty much any other medium. The included magnetic frames work great on my fridge and sheet metal surfaces.I do wish there were more cards like the house insignias and fewer of the frames lifted from the movies, but overall the variety of pictures means there's a little something for everyone.
I made this purchase as a gift for a Harry Potter fanatic. I recognize that part of my disappointment is my own fault for not looking more closely at the dimensions. This is a very small coloring kit, with coloring pages smaller than a 4x6" photograph.This, again, is my fault for not looking into the details. It does explain why the kit is so inexpensive - I will still give it as a gift and I expect her to be pleased. Would work great for travel, as well.
As the product measurements indicate, these are very small. However, the small size and fact that the back of the cards is finished with a pattern made the kids feel like they were special - like trading or playing cards. The pencils don't put down a very saturated color but they do work. The kids have switched to some of their own coloring things in addition to the pencils provided.
I liked the images on the cards. Some were detailed, some were less detailed. I thought that it was a good mix. That being said, the cards were MUCH smaller than I expected. No bigger than playing cards. The colored pencils they provided also didn't hold up particularly well on the card stock the images were printed on, so I'd have another medium to use if you really want these.
