This is a delightful little book, particularly so if you want to have your prejudices confirmed. Those prejudices would include the following: 1) Theory should never become detached from practice; 2) Elites who think they know what is best for the common folk are never to be trusted; 3) Europe is different from America and we should neither be intimidated by their culture nor excessively defensive concerning our own; 4) Ugliness--regardless of the political ideology supporting it--is still ugly; 5) Common sense and common aspiration trump hothouse academic posturing; 6) Architecture is space for human life, not an opportunity to make an abstract statement; 7) (my personal prejudice) Art deco (on the large scale) and prairie-style (domestically) so far exceed modernist or postmodernist architecture that one must wonder why they were ever abandoned.Tom Wolfe's purpose here is to demonstrate that establishment architecture (which happened to also be left-leaning, ideological, elitist architecture) is flat-out ugly. While he shows the linear progression of influences that led to the international style and sustained it, he never fully answers the question of why so many tolerated this nonsense for so long.I have had some personal dealings with one of the individuals in TW's rogues' gallery and I found him to be arrogant, pretentious, highhanded and not terribly imaginative. How do such individuals prosper? TW's answer, in part, is that they draw their actual living from university appointments rather than from real world construction projects, but he also argues that, in general, the consumer simply defers to such a person's judgment rather than following his own lights. Thus, one of the key lessons of the book is to trust yourself and your own inclinations and perceive the nudity of the elite culture's current emperors--a healthy antidote to many persisting cultural diseases.

I studied Architecture in the early 60's when the theories described here were in "full bloom". It has taken us a long time to get past stoicism in architecture. As always Tom Wolfe's is funny and entertaining when he delivers his observations on life. Thank you Tom!

This is a very disappointing book. It is largely a tirade against Modernism and architects and social-political movements. But it does not go anywhere in the end. You know what he does not like - and Tom did not like a lot of things - but not what he likes or what he thinks we should like.Yes there was a lot of bad Modernist architecture. But there has always been a lot of bad architecture of all types since the time that humans first built buildings. And despite the title, Wolfe never really addresses the topic of "our house". You can't blame the post WW2 flood of ugly houses on Bauhaus. I live in Miami. People come to see our "Art Deco" and "Miami Modern" architecture which is much inspired by Bauhaus. Today there is a building boom in housing in Miami that is strongly inspired by Bauhaus design - simple, uncluttered, harmonious but with aspects that attract the eye. What a blessed change from McMansions. This is not a book about architecture. It is a book about Tom Wolfe. One aspect that really annoyed me about this book was that Wolfe really is annoyed to an obsessive degree by people with large egos. And yet the ego that really stands out in this book is Tom Wolfe's. It is significant that Wolfe always wore a white suit to make sure that you don't miss him standing there in the crowd - the white flag of ego, on legs.

Read this after “The Right Stuff” because I really liked that book and was looking for an architectural history book. For someone familiar with the subject matter in this book I can understand the low reviews, but this was a very entertaining way to learn about the progression of architecture in the twentieth century.I look forward to reading more nuanced descriptions of this history, but I also really enjoyed reading a version from someone who wasn’t afraid to call modern architecture stupid and ugly.Beyond architecture the book is an illuminating account of how academia can create utter garbage when it turns completely inward, rather than using intellect to pursue societal goals.

Very funny and informative. I am a cabinet maker and regularly have to watch clients suffer through the nonsense he describes here from architects and designers. I found it fascinating to find out the historical origins.

The book looked new. It arrived more quickly than I expected from a private vendor, in a well protected envelope. A good price, even with the extra shipping charges. And in interesting book if you're interested in how America went from Beau-Arts buildings (quoin block corners, arched windows, ornamentation and peaked roofs with overhangs to shed rain) to the flat-roof, shear façade, 'modern' (dull) buildings of today. I've seen it everywhere...A beautiful Romanesque Church with an extension that looks like it could be a municipal parking garage or a nail factory. Ugh!

Amazing story. A story of professorial self annointed European transplanted Architects with a bunch of collegiate lemmings as followers. The emperors who wore no clothes is borne out here. Not the kind of architects I've had the pleasure of working with over the decades. Love em

Did you ever walk around the city (any city) and wonder where all those ugly new buildings came from? Why do they all look like identical filing cabinets? Mr Tom Wolfe presents a short, acidic history of how a few people managed to get a lot of us to believe that those concrete and aluminum slabs were works of art. If you've ever harbored suspicions that the emperor had no clothes here's ammunition to say so.

I wish I would have read this years ago. Mr. Wolfe analysis is brilliant.I am an architect and during my career I figured out on my own that much of the professional was powered by BS. Reading this book years ago would have saved me some time and frustrations.

I'm a father of two boys. I read this book because I wanted to see if there were seeds I could plant now, while they are young, that would bear fruit 40 or 60 years from now. I wondered what could do now to help them live full and meaningful lives. I also wondered if I would be able to avoid making mistakes. For those reasons, I read this book slowly, taking nearly a year to read every word. I can't help wonder if the time thinking about this was more fruitful or the data in and of itself, but of course the answer is both.Taking the time, thinking about these men, and imagining how the lessons learned could be grafted into the lives of my sons has been incredibly helpful. And I am so very grateful that George Valliant wrote this book.It did not chart a map, but it set a course that affirmed over and over again that the things you get right matter more than the things you do wrong and love is enough to bring about great joy.

Well...I read it cover to cover. No earth shattering revelations here. There's more history about the study itself and not nearly enough development and application of its results. Don't get me wrong, there are some tidbits to pick up on, but it's not as accessible to the lay person. At the end, you come away realizing how great an accomplishment this 70 year longitudinal study is, but that's about it.

Some of the oldest and most contentious debates on human beings centre around the relative influence of heredity (genetics), environment and individual voluntary action on growth and development. These include whether mental illness has genetic origins, what factors determine "success" in life, and whether adults continue to "develop" as they grow older (or whether all development happens before a certain age). These questions cross disciplinary boundaries as they involve concepts from psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and genetics.Great thinkers like Freud and Erikson made significant contributions to these debates, but many of their contributions were based on intuitive theorizing rather than rigorous empirical evidence. With time and careful research, some of their theories have been upheld, and others disproved! The studies that have made the most impact are longitudinal studies in which a carefully chosen cohort of respondents was tracked periodically over an extended period of time. The Harvard Grant StudyOne of the most well known of these studies is the Havard Grant study which commenced in the late 1930s and early 1940s and continues till this day. The survivors of the cohort (who were Harvard sophomores when they were recruited) have now entered their 90s, and the data collected therefore allows several inferences to be drawn on adult development.George F. Vaillant was the director of the Harvard Grant Study for over two decades. His latest book, The Triumphs of Experience, presents the latest findings. I found it a fascinating read as it not only uncovers new insights, but also questions some of the conclusions reached at earlier stages of the study. The Harvard Grant Study draws its conclusions from rigorous multivariate analysis, but Vaillant presents the findings with a distinctive and rare combination of statistical rigour and empathy for his subjects - in addition to tables containing the statistical results, there are profiles (disguised, of course) of different respondents of the study, and these give the reader a sense of being part of the study team. The original design and subsequent evolution of the study show how much our models of adult development have changed over time. At the time the study started, physical constitution and mental health indicators were expected to be important predictors of subsequent progress of the study. Parental/family relationships and childhood upbringing were thought to be unimportant. Yet, the latest Harvard Grant Study findings show that loving relationships during childhood are important for longevity and success in life.Findings of the Harvard Grant StudySome of the important findings of this study reported in The Triumphs of Experience:Individuals develop through their adult lives as well, not only upto the stage of adolescence. The impact of childhood trauma decreases over time; more importantly, the positive experiences of a loving childhood have enduring impact.Being well integrated and self-driving while young helps people live longer.Divorce led to happier marriages than the bottom third of sustaining marriages.Alcoholism had bigger negative impacts than measured by most previous studies. It accounted for more than half of the divorces in the Grant Study. The study shows that it is unlikely that alcoholics can return safely to social drinking, thereby upholding the methodologies followed by organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous. The involuntary coping styles predicted by Freud exist, and they are important for human effectiveness.Important Lessons for Management of Long-term Research ProgramsThe Harvard Grant Study is interesting from a research management perspective as well. Over its 70+ year lifespan so far, the study has transcended several research directors and team members, but the integrity of the study has not been compromised. George Vaillant estimates that about $ 20 million has been spent on the study over time, with an average cost of $10,000 per research paper published. The study has had different sponsors at different times, and while the study had to adapt itself to the priorities of these sponsors (such as a major retailer, cigarette company and a program against alcoholism), it still managed to sustain the collection of data related to its core research questions. With its emphasis on the choice of appropriate control variables and other related issues of study design, this book is a great primer on how to design and adapt longitudinal research studies for maximum research impact.Rishikesha Krishnan, IIM Bangalore

Well, start with full disclosure: I'm a Harvard man too, from a much later class than the subjects of this study. But the study consciously sought the crème de la crème: the students with the best physical, social, and intellectual profiles. With my notably modest accomplishments in all those areas, I'd never have gotten near the study. So, what does it prove that a very elite group of people mostly did well in life? Not much. The interest attaches to the few who did NOT do so well. Many transcended a rough childhood, but few could manage a lifetime of being locked in self, or a lifetime of drinking too much, or a lifetime of defending oneself too successfully against love and companionship. Some did find love and/or sobriety late, but personality mattered. A simple metric--extraversion minus neuroticism on the standard personality scale--predicted an awful lot.Another reviewer has pinpointed some problems with the statistics here. I would add that scoring big, vague, fuzzy concepts as if they were precise is always problematic. The study did its best--using independent raters, over time--and I think did a very good job, but between this scoring and the problem of using simple bivariate statistics, I sometimes wondered about the conclusions. There is also the problem that the study researchers ran, apparently, hundreds of correlations, so when something shows up as significant at .01, you should be a bit skeptical. Striking, though, are the many that showed up significant at .001, a rather rare thing in psychology. One problem is the list of defenses. Some are "immature," including "autistic fantasy," whatever that is; how is it different from ordinary fantasy? What little I got in life was due to my fantasizing in youth and then acting on it--"dream big dreams, then put on your overalls," as people used to say. Conversely, "mature" defenses include things like altruism, which seems to me neither unique to "maturity" nor a "defense." It's a natural human thing. No one is more altruistic than a little kid--she may throw a fit over "Mine!" in the sandbox, but will then turn right round and give the prized toy to a friend, or to Mom. Humor also is classified as a "mature defense." It is neither mature nor a defense--it's normal human behavior, again seen more often in kids than in grown-ups. Of course you can use it defensively, but that's a different issue. And my favorite defense, denial, is not listed--doesn't it qualify any more? Where would I have been without denial (which, as my daughter is fond of reminding me, is not a river in Egypt)? I would have recognized my own limitations much sooner, to my considerable loss. Those fantasies paid off thanks to hard work and a lot of luck. Realism would have done me in. One must remember that defenses are there for a reason. We NEED to defend ourselves in this world. I would seriously rethink the entire "defenses" issue. This aside, the book is excellent (if rather rambling and repetitious) and a very worthwhile read. I have become convinced by this and other long-term studies that such lifelong prospective studies are the very best way of finding out about people--not the only way, but the best way. We need more and more of them, with secure funding.

#574,007 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have been shooting my whole life and while I don't know everything there is to know about guns I am no amateur. I knew this was a introduction to firearms book and bought this to help me teach others about shooting sports and firearms ownership. As the "gun guy" at work I often get questions from people interested in firearms and I am not always very good at helping them. I hoped that by buying this I could learn how to better help newer shooters with getting into firearms. I feel like this book delivered that very well. The author does not take a technical approach at all. While reading this I felt as though I was eavesdropping on a conversation between the author and a new shooter. It is well laid out and I read it in a couple hours easily. I am a huge fan of this book and am contemplating buying another so I have a loaner copy on hand.Whether you are a beginner, thinking of getting a firearm or even a long time enthusiast interested in learning how to better communicate your knowledge this book belongs on your shelf.

Some perspective first: who is writing this review?I am an male adult, new to guns in general but I now very much enjoy “plinking”. I didn't grow up in a family that hunted or that had guns around. As such I had a ton of questions and was seeking general background on the subject. I wish to avoid costly and dangerous mistakes in my new hobby, and I don't want to appear ignorant when I interact with more experienced users, gunsmiths, and sales staff.Guns101 by DavId Steier is exactly what he promises, a base level education on the general subject of guns. It is not a complete guide to all things gun or even an in-depth guide to guns. Instead it is a general introduction to the categories of guns out there, how they work, and the advantages or disadvantages of each type in different situations. This book was is near perfect for my purposes. The author's writing style is informal but extremely informative. It's an easy read with lots of full color pictures and diagrams. And because of the large number of pictures and diagrams you may be surprised how fast the book reads. I was able to finish it in one afternoon. On this point kids should have no problems reading the text, both in length and writing level. This book would probably be of little help to a gun expert or even someone who grew up around guns. But if guns and the terms used around them are somewhat a mystery to you this book will be of a great help. Think of it like this, it's a starting point, not the finish line. If you have any doubts if this book is for you I encourage you to read the first five pages that are available in the preview. Once you do you will likely know your answer. Before I go further I want to mention the quality of the physical book itself. While it is a paperback the pages are heavy gloss paper and the color printing is excellent. It feels like a reference or school text book and I have no doubts it will last through many, many reads. I only mention this because I didn't expect a book this nice at less then fifteen dollars. On the downside, there were quite a few typos in this book. None affected how it read for me but it would definitely benefit from another trip through the spell checker and editor. The table of contents is available in the preview but I feel the author sells the book short by not giving enough information there. I think sub-headers should have been provided. So instead of the table of contents I encourage you to skim the index (also in the preview) as this will give you a far better idea of what exactly is covered in the book. And what is covered? The common types of guns: revolvers, pistols, rifles, shotguns, etc. And their sub-categories: single shot, single action, double action, semi-automatic, lever, pump, etc are described in detail. The general way each type of gun works internally is also covered. Not a specific hundred piece parts breakdown, but a general idea with the major parts and what role they play when the gun is loaded and fired. Think general overview here, it's not a service manual. He also covers ammunition, holsters, gun locks, gun safes, types of competitive shooting, lots common gun jargon, and more. For the most part I was very satisfied with the depth of coverage on the above subjects. Now with the broad strokes I know enough to ask intelligent questions at the range and can seek more information on the more specific subjects that interest me.What is not covered?First, the biggest over-site: “Assault Rifles” are only given a passing mention and not covered in depth like the other types of guns. I understand they are just specialized semi-automatic rifles but I would have liked to see more coverage on their specific features such as adjustable stocks and tactical rails.…So be warned, if you are looking for any information on “Assault Rifles” this book is a poor choice.Scopes and laser sites are not covered. Sure there is a passing mention of them here and there but no significant information on them is present. In fact the words scope and laser are not even found in the index. This isn't really a big deal but a few paragraphs on their basic features would have been nice. This book does not cover standing positions, grips, sites, or how to shoot. Not even in general. For this information you will have to look elsewhere. Common malfunctions are given a brief description but what to do when you gun malfunctions is not covered. Again, you will have to look elsewhere.I believe more emphasis and information should be given on how unload a gun and how to make sure it is unloaded. This is very important to everyone but especially important to beginners. While I would have liked to see the how to shoot basics covered but I suspect to cover them properly would double the length of this book. Also, this would probably create liability for the author so I understand why he chose to forgo coverage. And other things...The facts were well presented and appeared to be accurate to me. Since I'm a novice I'll leave the fact checking to the experts as I am not qualified. Not really a plus or a minus here but the author repeatedly mentions western shooting throughout the book, in fact he say he shoots in western competitions. So if this is up your ally you and the author may be like minded possibly making this a good book for you. For me it neither added or detracted from my experience but I thought it was worth mentioning. So In the end am satisfied with this book given its 101 title and low price. I took off one star for the missing information and multiple typos. One last thought....If you are going to buy, use, or carry a handgun after you read Guns 101 I highly recommend you read The Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery, 6th Edition by Massad Ayoob (ISBN-10: 0896895254). This book covers a vast array of handgun related subjects in depth. I found once I read both books I had more knowledge about handguns in general then the average person I meet at the range and I could intelligently discuss involved topics with sales staff or other shooters with confidence and ease.***Update: It's been about a year since I read this book and I have a lot more experience with guns now. I reread my review and still stand by it. This book is a great place to start. I have loaned my copy to several people and all have given me positive feedback once they read it.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I wanted something that would give me a high level overview of guns, ammunition, firearm accessories and help me understand the basics because the world of firearms is very complicated and overwhelming for the newby. And, except for this book - I haven't found anything that fit the bill - they were all too specialized on a particular type of weapon - or only focused on concealed carry. This book does gives that overview of all things guns very well. Its full of definitions, a little bit of historical context, some basic recommendations, examples, personal anecdotes, and useful illustrations. Its a quick read and should be one of the first books someone who wants to get into guns picks up before they head to the gun counter or the gun show.

I still felt like a rookie after this book. Not practical use Just save your money and go to a range and talk to pros

If you have a vague idea of which end the bullets come out, this book is for you. If you already know the difference between semi/full, single action vs double action, then this book won't be all that helpful to you.The information is good, Mr. Steier has his facts right and communicates them well. He does give some good advice on things to consider as you select a handgun.

I would have given it 5 stars but it elaborated on the obvious and fell short on some others things. It tells you several times not to point a gun at somebody. Ok I get that, hopefully most people get it the first time.Where it fell short it would say "make sure you clear your weapon or that it isn't loaded". Excellent pointer but HOW do you check to see if a gun is loaded? More detail on that and less on useless gun trivia "buying a round" at a bar actually has something to do with a "round" of ammunition.Don't get me wrong, I still gave it four stars. It's a good book. With a little more detail on important gun safety it would be perfect.

Well written and easy to read. Very understandable with a lot of useful info. This is an useful read whether you are new to guns or have been around them for decades.

Being a beginner i found this book very informative and educational. Being a transplant from Massachusetts to Georgia the idea of having a gun was foreign to me. This book helped me understand guns and how to buy a gun. It covered Pistols and long guns as well as an intro. in to ammunition. Well now i own 3 guns I love the idea of protecting my home. Of course this leads to larger questions, can you take a human life. Back to the book. This book was well structured and written. What impressed me was that the book was printed on card stock, I guess it plans on sticking around a while. My only real complaint was the typos, I've never seen so many in a book that was actually published. I believe this is the Publishers fault.
