This book was very well written and quite interesting. Very disturbing that this could happen in America. Since this book was written over ten years ago, I don’t understand why we never found out what happened to the kids in the long term. It would be nice to be provided with an update. I understand the book was about the failure of the system, and not so much the children themselves, but I’m still interested to know what ever happened to them, and where they are & what they’re doing today. And Endora, too.***I looked up this author and found her website and YouTube channel, and I posted a comment asking her where the kids are today, and she responded to me. She said she doesn’t hear much about the kids anymore, who are now ages 19 and 22, but she knows that Joel is in college and Fancy Free just had a baby this year, and had to move back in with Endora because she’s the only support system she has, and unfortunately, Endora isn’t any better than she ever was. She fears Fancy Free and her baby will end up repeating the same cycle that they’ve been through and are still in. So sad.
I rarely have time to read, but I made time for this book. Once I started it, I could not put it down. The story is gut wrenching and real with a shocking ending. The foster care system is near and dear to my heart as it is to this author as well. Her experiences have shaped her life and from what I gather she will never stop trying to make this world a better place.
A heartbreaking story showing difficulties and flaws in the social service system. A quick read that draws you into the life of the author and makes you want to do more to help the many kids in need of good families.
This book has touched me deeply. It has taken me over 24 hours to write this review. I realize how broken the Social Services System is from talking with friends. I just never realized how broken. Rene brought her very emotional story to life. I cried as I read about the children as I can't believe that they will ever become functional members of society with mostly poor role models. I wonder if all Social Services in America are as bad as those illustrated. I hope not. I am thankful that at least Rene and her family fought to help Fancy Free and Joel even though the State sent them back to a very unstable mother.
This book opened my eyes to the dysfunction a family can have and the helplessness others can feel when trying to help. It shows the brokenness in the government systems that are supposed to protect kids. I couldn’t put the book down once I got started and highly recommend for everyone.
I had trouble finishing this book. Parts of it were hard to believe. I can't imagine being willing to separate two kids because they would make your life inconvenient. If they were in as much danger as the author believed, she would have been willing to take them both. She just seems self absorbed and not really interested in the best interest of the kids.
This book was excellent. From the beginning pages, Rene is able to bring the reader in by painting a descriptive scene of the individuals and the family involved. It gives a very realistic view of the challenges/obstacles faced in today's system for children through a story that is heartbreaking....but also raw, inspiring and encouraging.It's a page turner...very quick read. Highly recommended!
