I bought this book thinking I could see Nova Scotia and PEI in a week. Well now I know that is near impossible. This book highlights important stuff concisely but lacks detail. This book is good if you dont have much time and just want to see the highlights of NS. I would recommend the travel guide from Bradt if you plan on spending a couple days or more in each area as is much more thorough. So in summary: if you just want a quick outline or summary of each province get this book. If you plan on spending lots of time in NS get Bradt.
Perfect if you are there for a short time because they reveal special places you may discover that you may not have time to discover on your own. Putting it on your Kindle you have an easier way of obtaining the information you seek and no worries about filling up your luggage!
Not as comprehensive as the Lonely Planet guide, but I nice supplementary text.
Wish there was more on accommodations and dining. I looked on line for my bookings that included Airbnb, hotel, and motel. I do plan to use the book for excursions and activities.

This was a good addition to our travel planning books (I always use AAA and used the Nova Scotia tourism bureau's book too). This had a lot of interesting information that other books didn't have, and we probably found some things to do that we wouldn't have otherwise. I found it very good for recommending bed and breakfast locations throughout Nova Scotia, especially since we were traveling with children.
It was okay, but I expected a little more for some reason based on the description of the author.

After I saw this author, and in particular, this book in Science, I had to get it. A lot of reviews comment on how this book is about the author's personal experience, but I don't think the prestigious journal would spend time with a book they think is unreflective of the realities of Grad school.This book is a bit out of date on how the GRE works, and I don't like some of the advice. I would much rather publish papers in greater quality than greater quantity. However, people need to live in the real world, and so do I. If I enter academia, I know I need a large list of publications. Once I get into a tenure-track position, I have to be good at begging for money, I mean applying for grants. It saddens me that this is the way it is in American academia, but I need to prepare myself for it.I'm not going to skip a masters. I want to hit the ground running for a Ph.D. That's why I want to get more information and learn more techniques before applying for a Ph.D. The author says to skip it, but I'm going to disagree.Anyway, it was a fun book. I personally couldn't put it down. There are a lot of tips in there I plan to do. I'll also try to publish each chapter of my dissertation.

They have lots of important and exciting research that occupies their mind and their time.I wish to sincerely thank Professor Chakrabarty for taking time out of his busy schedule to write this book.The book reads like a friendly conversation with a top-tier professor, it is best read while sipping a cup. This book can also be described as reading a long string of personal emails from an inspiring and honest professor, it is best read while sipping a cold mug of beer.In the world of Academia professors do not take time out of their schedule to have a friendly general chat with students about the ins-outs and tricks of the Academic World. Professors do not have time or interest in sitting down for a cup of tea and discussing the map they have drawn of the Land of Academia. Within the pages of this readable conversation Prosanta Chakrabarty does just that, he sits down with the student and gives them a 'little bit of knowledge.'This book is an over-view of grad school in general. It is not specific to you nor I, nor any one. If you are looking for a step-by-step guide to get through your specific grad school program, I'd suggest re-thinking entering grad school.I am entering the University of Arizona Graduate School in a few months.Grad School is a 'choose-your-own-adventure' experience then undergrad and I am grateful I have read this helpful guide to the world that I will be entering. I feel a bit more confident that I am familiar with the language, culture and expectations of the Land of Academia. Thank You, Professor Chakrabarty for taking time out of your schedule to have tea and conversation with an entering grad student. Best of Luck with your Research.
This book presents a well thought out and thorough overview of the typical progression an individual makes throughout their early academic career. Chakrabarty presents a wealth of useful tips which will help individuals move from undergraduate through graduate school, onto postdoc and into assistant professorship. Culminating in advice for tenure review, this book offers advice along the entire timeline.Not simply a self-help list of pointers, this book also takes a serious approach to the difficulties one might face as one transitions between each of these stages, including a realistic appraisal of the number of Ph.D.s being produced and the number of academic jobs for those individuals. This is not to scare a student off, but rather it is to allow them to approach their career with open eyes. That being said, the student who reads and incorporates the advice in this book will be well situated to succeed.Good scholarship is critical for advancement, and this book will give you advice on positioning yourself in such a way as to maximize your scholarship. Topics such as time management, committee choice, the different kinds of postdocs and how to spend start up are all common areas that people trip up along the journey. The book concludes with a thoughtful and honest discussion about additional difficulties faced by minorities and women in science.Finally the book includes a wealth of useful appendices that cover topics like C.V.s presentations, start up budgets, chalk talks etc. While each individual will obviously craft their own material, having worked examples from a successful academic will at least present idea of what has worked in the past.Written in a clear and conversational tone, this book is highly recommended for people at all career stages.
Great reading, every chapter starts with the hard part of academic life and then flows to a more optimistic opinion. I just wish there were more connections with Brazilian academic life and that presented in the book.
In short, if you are interested in entering academia, read this book. Having recently defended my dissertation, this book has already proven useful in terms of information about postdocs and applying for assistant professorships. The earlier sections are vital information that anyone interested in graduate school should read; and read as early as possible in their research career. Example CVs, cover letters, and other information in the appendix are also quite valuable.This book is concise but very enjoyable to read, extremely informative on the subject matter, and broadly applicable to multiple disciplines. I highly recommend it and have already done so to fellow graduate students/recent graduates in my department.
