Excellent on several counts: 1. Great photographs, 2. Well organized and presented with touching stories, 3. Insight into cultural changes afoot in Cuba.

As a transwoman myself and as a professional investigator I found this work a fascinating introduction to the lives of personalities on the same gender spectrum with me but living in another society altogether. The photographs are simply beautiful: the colors are vivid, the compositions excellent and the faces of the subjects are looking right at you revealing both their exceptional bravery and their vulnerability. The text is spare but informative and the quotations from the people photographed are very moving. At a time when transgender individuals are becoming more and more visible and active in society -- think of Kristen Beck, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy Seals now running for Congress -- and the United States and Cuba are moving toward open and friendly relations, this book could not be more timely or relevant. It's one of those volumes that you'll keep in your bookcase on that shelf reserved for books you know you'll return to again and again. TransCuba is not just a book of photographs. It's a work of art that you'll cherish. I recommend it without any reservations at all.

Once again artist Mariette Pathy Allen illuminates an aspect of transgender culture. Her photographs, interviews, and her two previous books, Transformations: Crossdressers and Those Who Love Them (1984) and The Gender Frontier (2003) are among the primary reasons transgender people have become a community and now a movement. Her latest contribution to society’s understanding is TransCuba, a book that is as colorful and passionate as the country and peoples she documents. This is not the first time Mariette has traveled to another country and documented trans culture, but it is the first time she has devoted an entire book to one country. She is the “Margaret Mead” of the trans world enriching our own lives by according to her subjects the dignity and respect they deserve. That her subject in this book includes Cuba, itself, makes this work all the more enlightening.

This book is gorgeous! Mariette Pathy Allen skillfully and sensitively captures the intimate lives of this oft-marginalized community in a way that highlights them as being beautifully human. So frequently, transgender individuals are seen as freaks or sensationalized as spectacles, but here we are invited into their private spaces, privy to their family and intimate relationships and taken on a journey through the Cuban social and political landscape. Besides the formal beauty of the intimate portraits, rich landscapes and intricate still-lifes, the importance of this book cannot be overstated, as it represents a specific moment in history that will be gone within the blink of an eye.

A gorgeous and glowing collection of portraits that captures the strength, beauty and variety of Cuban transwomen. I have used all of Allen's photography collections to teach transgender issues and literature because her talented eye engages students to see beyond sensationalized stereotypes to recognize a shared struggle and humanity. By pairing the portraits with autobiographical narratives, this book also provides a depth and variety unavailable in many other texts or mediums; it would therefore be useful in many classroom settings, particularly those that also cover global LGBTQ or human rights.

Worthwhile read on an important topic, but academically presented as a series of phenomena. Not directly actionable, but remaining as anecdotal possibilities. I suspect that this is addressed in later writings by author. This book is not the best to read first in order get an introduction to her work.

For you lovers of Jon Kabat-Zinn and MBSR, you may want to forgo this approach toward mindfulness. It's not self-help, not a guide, not a set of tenets or steps. But, Langer is a Harvard research psychologist who has been working in this field a long time and who has taken the topic in important and interesting directions that are different from MBSR. I am involved in both psychology and mindfulness, teaching both at the college level. If, however, you happen to be open minded, intelligent and curious in understanding the logic of our psyches, this is a good read. It's not clinical, but also not written for dummies. Great book, glad I found it becasue Langer's work is informing my own now.

I really liked this book. It differs mindfulness from some of the Oriental meditation techniques that are very similar. One of the challenges of dealing with the world today is that there is a great deal of pressure to focus on the past or the future. Being mindful of the here and now is a great skill to broaden perspective and focus on the things that we have control of. The book is not particularly good at teaching specific exercises for mindfulness but I think that this is not its intention. It does a great job of explaining what mindfulness is as well as its benefits. If you're interested in learning about this practice this would be a good start.

I can honestly say that, in many ways, this is one of the most important -- and life changing -- books I have ever read. I am giving it 5 stars as an overall review because of the significance of the message, even though I think the book could have used a more heavy-handed editor.I became familiar with Langer's work only through articles that appeared occasionally in the New York Times. I am guilty of thinking, often, that any person featured there is the very best __________ (fill in the blank). I am often disappointed. But not this time.I have been an on and off (with long periods of off) meditator for 20 years, and I can say with certainty: 1. I never liked it 2. I found this book to be infinitely more helpful with regard to catching my own self defeating patterns. While this isn't a how-to book, and it doesn't include a list of steps towards Langer's definition of mindfulness (which I should mention is different from Buddhism's in many ways), I immediately learned life-changing strategies for coping with every day stress; I also realized that some of the things in the book, I already do, which offered some insight into why I am resilient in some ways and not in others. To wit, I saw my own psychological traps. This book makes you see the whole world differently, in fact, and I don't think that is an exaggeration. My criticism of the book lies in the descriptions of some of the experiments, which are boring at best but some of them I just could not comprehend how the conclusions were drawn. A lot of these experiments just didn't make sense to me, and I would have preferred that the methodology only be included in footnotes, not the actual body of the book. In my opinion, the book would be far more interesting to hear Langer expound upon her theories and insights from her research.Overall, however, this is a phenomenal work, and I cannot imagine that the information here would not be beneficial to everyone, regardless of life stage -- very old or young or some place in between.

This was recommended to me by someone who is studying psychology. I found Dr. Langer's studies to be quite remarkable. Very interesting subject matter. She has discovered the fountain of youth! It's all about controlling your brain.

I read this book in its first edition and found it so helpful, I have applied it to my life ever since. Today mindfulness is much more well known. She spells it out without the religious connection. It works! Try it!

I've read at least snippets of all of Zachary's work (including all of Reading Poker Tells) and I can't recommend him highly enough. Obviously, his knowledge base is massive and universally correct. However, that's not the real value in his work. The real value comes from his ability to clearly, concisely, and simply explain the information. It would be very easy for someone to hide behind significant amounts of subjective terminology and incidentally convolute the information all in an effort to sound flowery and "prove that he knows more than you". Mr. Elwood doesn't do that, though. The way in which he presents the information is extremely approachable and there are always very clear explanations and expectations of how reliably we can apply the information from the book to situations at the table. Basically, if you want something easy to understand that will immediately increase your win rate, then by this damn book!

I shouldn't be writing this review, but I can't not help support this game changing work. The author has spent a ton of time and energy to put together a great book that will help you and your game in a different way than just taking new lines and figuring pot odds.If you are a serious player that is looking for ways to expand your win rate and hourly earn, and are willing to put in the time to study and learn the things in this book, this book will pay for itself several times over. If nothing else, it will make you realize the info that you are giving away, and help you protect yourself at the table.

What Zachary Elwood has done with this book is create an architectural framework for reading poker tells. It's really quite remarkable what he's done by placing tells into their respective situational importance. As an Enterprise Architect, I help companies study and develop architectural frameworks that allow their business to run more smoothly and efficiently. He has the mindset of an Enterprise Architect but has the ability to explain his framework to the average poker player. This is the single factor that sets this book apart (and better than) any other book on tells. If you only read one book on tells, this is the one to get. Even if you are intellectually lazy and don't want to learn to read tells, this book will teach you how to avoid giving off your own tells. If you think tells are unimportant, you're wrong. Read this book and win more money at poker. Easy to read and very informative.

I've been playing about 4 years and am pretty good at reading people. A lot of the tells in the book I knew but it helps to reemphasize them so you know to look for these things. I play a lot of live poker and if youre knew to live poker this is a must. Its good even if you're not new. I've read most of the tells books out there including the one written by Navarro and Helmuth (of course Caros as well) and those are a joke compared to this book. This book gives REAL LIFE tells that I see all the time in low stakes. Those other books mention stuff like someone leaning in more or hands closer inwards equals strength which are rediculous; I never see that in a live game. Or if someone starts shaking their leg. How often to you see that? Um never. This book talks abotu how quick someone acts or stares at you etc. THESE are things that are real tells you see every day. Very Good Book.

To be honest this was the first book on poker tells I have ever read and I thought it was a good book. However, I believe that to get a sense of who we were reading about and from what perspective this book came from, the "About Me" section should have been one of the first sections we should have read in this book. The Author lists it near the very end of the book. Although I haven't read many other books on tells, this book is probably much easier to read based on how the author splits this book up in 3 sections: Waiting-for-Action tells, During-Action tells, and Post-Bet Tells; the author lists the tells a player tends to show when he is either weak or strong for each section. It is well written and well organized. He also teaches that it is very important to correlate between the tell and the player. Trust me. It is a very good book. One you need if you have a poker book collection. (Very good for Limit Player as well as No limit players).

This book is great whether you are new to Poker Tells (Doug Polk) or an experienced watcher of hands, body language, faces, etc. I've read it 2 or 3 times and will read it several more times.

I have several psychology books relating to poker tells in different degrees (including Caro's). They're all useful, but it's still up to you to apply in different situations. You still have to make the right applications here too, BUT this book is more focused on how to use tells in specific ways while playing. Well articulated and organized. Plus, Elwood gets into even more detail online using videos and real world situations. I've not purchased any poker books for quite awhile (I have over 30), but I'm glad I got this one. No, it's not rocket science, but for me a useful tool.

Perhaps this book is the toughest slog of any read so far in my grad classes. The authors managed to make even the simplest of ideas challenging to envision in practice. Try this:"Although strategic planning is widely accepted as sound management practice for the achievement of objectives, organization theorists have observed that organizations appear, as well, to pursue behavioral goals, which may or may not coincide with statements enshrining the rational purposes of the organization."Why not simplify as:Sound management uses strategic planning to achieve objectives. But, in some organizations, stated behavioral goals may not align with the expressed purposes for the organization's existence.I suspect the authors' confusing writing style creates the need for endless repetition. They need to say nearly everything 3 different ways for the reader to understand.I feel fortunate that additional class resources and online resources are much easier to comprehend. The topics of project evaluation and performance are not difficult to understand.

This book goes in circles. The authors takes easy to understand concepts and make them extremely confusing. As a Ph.D. student I have had my share of hard to read textbooks, this book is at the top of the list. The only good thing I find about the book is they provide easy to understand definitions in the glossary. I would never recommend this book to learn program evaluation. Also it should be noted there are typos in the book.

This text book is one of the worst I have read in my eight years of undergrad and graduate study. With few exceptions the material is presented in a tangential, rambling and circumstantial manner. I found myself frequently referring to other academic sources in order to decipher the subject material that McDavid awkwardly attempts to convey. I was initially hoping that the negative reviews of the text were hyperbole, but I have discovered they were accurate. If a professor assigns this text, my advice is to skip the class and wait until a better one is assigned.

This is without a doubt one of the most poorly written textbooks I've come across in my life. What is supposed to be an introduction to program evaluation is instead a blob of information thrown together, poorly formatted, and nearly impossible to comprehend for someone that's just beginning to learn about these concepts. Definitions of key concepts are basically missing unless you look at the glossary, examples of key concepts are nonexistent and everything just comes across as mambo jumbo. Truly a terrible excuse for a university used textbook.

This book is an extremely long read and I found it not very useful at all. I needed it for class, but it is uninteresting and very boring. It takes awhile just to read one chapter.

Good and pretty big material but too much formal and sophisticated explanations. Basically works for people with some experience and who has enough time and assistance.

First of all, this was a scanned e-book without any links. Possibly the limitations of the Kindle file format where it's not like PDF files with bright color, links, and text flow.Second, the material was pointless, overblown, and unnecessary. Would not recommend the book at all.

The book within two days in perfect condition. I don't like the content much, but the product was perfect.

Mao's China and the Cold War (The New Cold War History)

From Library Journal

The author, formerly a student in Shanghai and at Southern Illinois University, uses primary sources from Chinese archival materials to provide new information on and analysis of Chinese leader Mao Zedong's behavior during the Cold War. Chen takes further the current literature on Chinese security interests (see Andrew J. Nathan and Robert S. Ross's The Great Wall and the Empty Fortress, LJ 7/97; for Mao's life, see Philip Short's Mao: A Life, LJ 11/15/99, and Ross Terrill's Mao Zedong: A Biography, Stanford Univ., 2000) and presents two important points: First, he argues that Mao made decisions primarily based on his ability to promote "continuous revolution" in China and bolster his own power. And, second, he asserts that Mao used the Chinese people's "victim mentality" (i.e., the feeling that foreign powers were poised to take unfair advantage of China's vulnerabilities) to rally public opinion. The author investigates several case studies, including the rise of the Cold War, America's "loss" of China, the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, the first and second Indochina War, the Polish-Hungarian crisis, and the Taiwan Strait crisis. We are fortunate to have this book because of the author's analysis and use of sources that are not generally available to non-Chinese. Highly recommended for all academic libraries and public libraries with international relations collections. Peggy Spitzer Christoff, Rockville, MD Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

A major contribution to our understanding of Chinese Cold War history. Chen Jian's unrivaled control of the new and plentiful Chinese source materials is evident throughout, as an inspiration to other scholars in the field. (Odd Arne Westad, London School of Economics)Chen's extensive documentation will boldly challenge the revisionist view of a more pragmatic Mao. Chen Jian's works on China's rise to international power are groundbreaking books exploiting Chinese (and Soviet too) source materials and interviews. This book follows along the same pattern established in his 1994 book, "China's Road to the Korean War," which argues that Mao's ideological commitment to the social and political revolution forecasted, even guaranteed, a shooting conflict with the United States. In Mao's China and the Cold War, Chen goes further in his analysis, demonstrating that it was Mao's worldview and determination to make China the central figure in the international Communist movement that was the driving force behind China's many foreign entanglements: Korea, First and Second Indo-China Wars, Taiwan Strait Crisis, the sundering of the brotherly alliance between Beijing and Hanoi, and the nearly fatal rift between Mao and Moscow. Chen deftly describes Mao's concern for "continuous revolution," and the fear that reactionary movements abroad would influence the Chinese population at home. Of equal concern to Mao was the effort to harness the people's enthusiasm for ultimately disasterous endeavors, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Chen shows that Mao accomplished these "mobilizations" and maintained his grip on power by demonizing first the United States, then the Soviet Union. This form of politics served Mao well, allowing him to keep his supporters in check (even if he ended up purging them in the end) and his opponents disoriented. It even allowed him the freedom to make the compromise most surprising of all -- normalization of relations with the United States in the early '70s. Chen points out that even with this act, Mao was pursuing his goal of radicalizing his own movement, particulary vis-a-vis the Soviets. Ironic, then, that in permanently casting away from the Soviet-led bloc (to which Mao had more than once pledged allegiance), Mao nearly guaranteed the former's disintegration and went a long way to undermining international Communism's appeal world-wide.A bibliographical essay addressing each chapter enhances the usefulness of this book for students and those getting acquainted with the Far East during the Cold War.

This is an interesting perspective of what Mao's perspective of the Cold War looked like and the thaw of Sino-American Relations.

Chen Jian has written an insightful history of the role China played in the Cold War from the time of Mao Zedong's rise to power and the Communist victory in 1949 to the resumption of cordial relations with the United States in 1969-72. Chen argues that Chinese foreign policy during the Maoist Era was driven by Mao's ideology of "continuous revolution," and that Mao cultivated, and then exploited, a "victim mentality" in the populace in order to mobilize his people whenever necessary. This continuous revolution included an ongoing push for an international proletarian movement and called for the eventual establishment of China's centrality to the movement. In addition, Mao believed that the eventual triumph of his Marxist revolution would garner China a place of prestige in the international community. By focusing on nine transnational events, Chen shows how China's foreign policy was informed by this Maoist doctrine and how Mao would redefine terms, when necessary, to keep his revolution relevant to the current state of world affairs. The nine events that Chen analyzes are the Chinese Civil War, the dissolution of U.S.-Sino diplomatic channels, the deterioration of the Sino-Soviet alliance, China's role in the Korean, the first Indochina, and the Vietnam War; the Polish and Hungarian crises, the Taiwan Strait crises, and the Sino-American rapprochement. Chen weaves the theme of Mao's continuous revolution throughout the book and supports his thesis with an impressive amount of source material. In fact, there are nearly one hundred pages of sources and citations, some of which are recently declassified Chinese documents as well as Soviet documents made available after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, newly released primary documents make up the smallest portion of Chen's source material, and much of the remaining documentation is information that was already readily available.Chen evenhandedly examines China's involvement in Cold War events, seeking to prove his thesis rather than take sides or place blame regarding controversial events. However, as regards the scholarly debate among historians of "America's lost chance" in maintaining a non-confrontational relationship with Mao's China, Chen firmly places himself on the side of those who insist that such a lost chance is a myth. According to Chen, a Sino-American accommodation was impossible due to the inner dynamics of Mao's ideology. Since the opposition camp Chen refers to bases its position on what Washington could have done differently (which, according to Chen's thesis is irrelevant), Chen charges that the proponents of the lost chance theory are operating on an ethnocentric methodology. China's foreign policy, Chen maintains, was designed to ameliorate Mao's revolution and was not simply a reaction to U.S. policy towards China.Interestingly, Chen can also be accused of operating from an ethnocentric methodology. He presents his argument that a CCP-American accommodation was impossible due to Mao's ideology, but as William Appleman Williams has argued in The Tragedy of American Diplomacy, Americans were operating under an ideology of their own during that same period. The American ideology during this time frame, according to Williams, included the belief that American values were Divinely-ordained universal values and therefore any other worldview was not just wrong-headed, but evil. Williams cites several instances in American history where this "good verses evil" ideology informed American foreign policy. Hence, it can be argued that a Sino-American accommodation was impossible due to American, not Maoist, ideology. This view also challenges scholars that allege that Sino-American relations were made impossible due to tactical misjudgments and simple errors in policy-making by Washington.Throughout the book, as Chen examines the ideological motivations behind Mao's political decisions, he refrains from either idealizing or vilifying the Chairman. While this neutrality towards Mao's actions is commendable in many respects, it also leaves important questions unanswered. For example, a scant two sentences are devoted to the introduction and explanation of both the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the ensuing Anti-Rightist movement. These were brutal and tragic policies in the history of Mao's leadership, with extreme political ramifications, and as such, they deserved a measure of analysis in Mao's China.Another reason that the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Anti-Rightist movement should have received more coverage is because they have a direct bearing on Chen's thesis that Mao's political decisions were based on ideology. Many historians believe that Mao deliberately instituted the campaign to get political dissidents to identify themselves so they could subsequently be purged. It could be argued that because the violence directed at the so-called rightists followed the Polish and Hungarian crises and coincided with the de-Stalinization process in Russia, Mao was making decisions based on threats to his personal power and dictatorial style of government, and not on his ideology. At the very least, Chen could have explained how the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Anti-Rightist movement fit into the overall scheme of Mao's ideology. The fact that Chen glosses over these major events and does not address the questions they raise makes him appear remiss in his scholarship; at worst, he can be accused of only presenting evidence that supports his thesis. A similar problem exists regarding the coverage of the Great Leap Forward. Though Chen makes it abundantly clear that Mao believed in the superiority of his ideology, he does not elaborate on how Mao could continue to believe this in light of millions of Chinese deaths as a result of his Great Leap Forward and other policies. How did Mao interpret the failures of his policies and the deaths of his people as he put his ideology into practice? How did he reconcile his utopian aims and the reality his policies created? Mao's China does not answer these significant questions.Chen's treatment of the evolution of the Chinese position leading up to the Sino-American rapprochement is one of the book's strengths. Traditional scholarship typically focuses on the deteriorating Sino-Soviet relationship and the advantageous strategic and geopolitical aspects that reconciliation with the United States would afford China. This approach explains why a Sino-U.S. reconciliation would have been valuable to China, but Chen explains how Mao made such a political about-face possible. According to Chen, Mao viewed the rapprochement with an eye to reinvigorating his declining internal political power. By redefining or inventing terms Mao was able to justify seeking friendly relations with the U.S.--the nation that, for two decades, he had declared to be his movement's primary enemy. For example, even though the Soviet Union was clearly communist, Mao announced that capitalism had been restored to the Soviet Union and redefined Soviet Russia as a "social-imperialist country." He then declared that this type of imperialism was more dangerous than the United States' variety. By reclassifying the Soviet Union, Mao could justify banding together with a less dangerous foe in a united front against China's new primary enemy, the Soviet Union. In this way, a Sino-American rapprochement was made compatible with Mao's ideology. In addition, by deleting the Soviet Union from the brotherhood of Marxist countries, China, in Mao's eyes, would become central to the cause. The status brought to China and the CCP by being recognized by the U.S., and soon after by the U.N., also helped to fulfill Mao's goal of a prestigious international position for China. For Mao, the Sino-American rapprochement produced positive forward momentum and progress for his Marxist revolution.Overall, Mao's China and the Cold War accomplishes its aims by illuminating the role that ideology played in Chinese foreign policy during the Cold War. Readers will find Chen's coverage of the evolution of the Chinese position leading up to the rapprochement enlightening, and other sections of book, such as the section on "ping pong diplomacy," light-hearted and very entertaining. The book is well-written and very readable, making it ideal for a general audience or anyone desiring a general understanding and overview of Maoist China.Seasoned scholars may take issue with the fact that Chen oversimplifies at times, and at others he presents only one side. For example, Chen cites the Sino-American rapprochement as a major incident that led to the wholesale collapse of the Soviet Union. This is overly simplistic in light of the fact that Chen does not go into detail regarding the multi-casual factors that, in fact, resulted in the Soviet downfall. And as regards events leading up to the Sino-American rapprochement, Chen does an excellent job of revealing Mao's thinking and reasoning, but he does not develop the concurrent evolution of the U.S. side of the story. The book would have been enhanced by explaining the changes in the U.S. perspective. For example, a central issue for the Truman administration was the mutually exclusive American and communist worldview and their irreconcilable economic systems, but the Cold War as well as domestic issues shaped the Nixon administration into a security-focused government. Developing these contextual issues could shed light on the American contribution to paving the way for the reinstitution of diplomatic relations with China.Even still, Mao's China and the Cold War is an excellent contribution to the historiography of the Cold War.

Chen Jian's book for a number of years has been the standard "must read" text for any student of modern Chinese history. An excellent example of "new Cold War" scholarship, the book makes excellent use of newly available Chinese primary sources and secondary materials to explain policy making of the PRC leadership. The book's central argument is that Mao's endless pursuit of "continous revolution" in China defined his priorities in foreign policy, so that essentially a confrontational foreign policy became a necessary backdrop to domestic political developments. The argument has its own critics; one may argue, for instance, that the domestic politics first approach is unduly Sino-centric, and ignores the dynamic of China's relationship with other powers, notably the US and the USSR. But for better or worse, Chen Jian's argument cannot be ignored. The book is nicely written, and I had my undergraduate students digest it with apparent ease. Highly recommended.

Mao's envy on the economic success of the now defunct USSR resulted to the classic exchange of thoughts through letters between the two great communist society leaders. this book contains all Mao's arguments on why USSR would not be considered as a socialist state.
