This book arrived within 3 days in mint condition.Radiation posioning has always interested me, and this book details Ouchi's condition after being exposed to high amounts of radiation; as well as explaining WHY these symptoms emerged. The reader is also given insight into how the characters were feeling at these times, except Ouchi, who becomes unable to communicate, so his prospective is lost.The only drawback is that some parts are very vague or not detailed just enough to understand, but these parts are far and few between.Pictures are included- whenever the note "[Insert A/1]" appears, flip to the pictures at the halfway point to the one corresponding to the letter/number :) I only realized this partway, so I thought I would mention it.A nessecary read in the age of nuclear warfare.
This is a book about a man named Ouchi whose chromosomes were destroyed by a blast of neutron rays while working in unsafe conditions in a uranium processing facility. For 83 days, a crack team of doctors, nurses, and medical experts from several countries try to keep him alive. Because Ouchi's chromosomes have been destroyed, his body cannot generate new cells to replace the dead ones. His skin falls off. His mucus membranes disappear. He is in constant pain. He suffers massive internal hemorrhages and the medical staff have to constantly pump fluids and nutrients into his body to keep him alive. His organs fail, one by one, and their functions are taken over by various medical apparatus. At various points, Ouchi's doctors and nurses question whether or not what they are doing is the right thing to do. That is to say, are they actually helping him, or are they just endlessly prolonging his agony?This is a slim but tough book.It goes into gruesome but necessary detail about the deterioration of a human body afflicted by neutron beam radiation. It is told in a straightforward reportorial style that goes into thoroughgoing technical detail but not so much that the average reader cannot follow along. It also gives space to the emotional turmoil the medical staff underwent as they battled to keep Ouchi alive.In some ways, this is a book about the dangers of atomic radiation, but it is also a strange kind of existential novel where the main character's mental state is largely unknown at the height of his suffering. Ouchi was under heavy sedation for much of his sickness and he was unable to communicate in any detail what his thoughts and feelings were. The book seems to suggest that had he been awake his suffering would've been monstrous. The medical staff did what they thought was best even in the face of a hopeless situation.This is harsh story taken from real life and told in harrowing but necessary detail.
I found this book to be far dryer than I expected, and thus it was very difficult to get through. As to the story, I don't think I've ever been more disturbed. What Mr. Ouchi endured makes even the worst of hells pale in comparison. But I didn't get the sense that medical staff were coldly treating the poor man like an 'experiment', as has been suggested. It seemed to me that each nurse and physician was dedicated to helping Mr. Ouchi heal in any way they could.
Such a great book. Kinda fascinating and horrific at the same time. Kept me engrossed all the way to the end.
Not for the faint of heart, but a thorough report on how the crisis was handled dealing with the horrifying effects radiation has on a human body. I couldn't put the book down.
There can be no spoiler alert here, as the title tells you the end of the story. Also, the vibrant yellow blocks on the book cover gradually turn a sickly green. The 83rd block is black. Goodbye.I read "A Slow Death" in two hours and have been disturbed about it ever since. Despite the efforts of some of the world's most talented and compassionate medical professionals, Mr. Ouchi was doomed from the blue flash. This book describes the hope of success and the grim progression of the inevitable. Intricate medical procedures and nuclear physics were explained in a way that did not bore or confuse me, and did not cause me to lose sight of the humanity of the suffering patient.After watching some Cold War movies I was interested in learning about what happened to people who were exposed to high levels of radiation. In the movies people grew pale, threw up a lot, and died; I knew that couldn't be the entire story. Radiation Sickness is described on the internet as including things like vomiting, hair loss, skin hemorrhages, bleeding, loss of white blood cells, pain, delirium and often death, but that seemed vague. This book, however, explained in detail how these symptoms (and several unexpected others) actually played out in the life of a thirty-five year old husband and father. Afterwards I felt a little guilty for reading it and peering into the window of such agony just to satisfy my curiosity.The gentle and amiable patient did not realize for several days that he was what is termed a "walking ghost". While he appeared to be fine for a while, all of his cells were damaged and his death was certain. Pain medication to make him comfortable when symptoms arose would have ordinarily been the only intervention while awaiting the inevitable, but in his case the hospital staff and his family did not tell him that he received a lethal dose and maintained that fiction almost until the day he died. The doctors kept giving him transplants, transfusions, skin grafts, injections and cardiac massage -- a heroic effort overall -- to keep him alive until maybe something would actually help. Since severe radiation sickness is not common, these folks had no real idea what they could do and dealt with symptoms as they arose. And arose. And arose. The fact that Mr. Ouchi survived for months is nothing short of amazing, but perhaps honor and hope came at too high a cost: his incomprehensible CONSCIOUS suffering.Despite the horrific subject, the book was engaging. I came to care about all of the real people involved. I think I learned a lot. I'm glad I read it, and intend to read it again more slowly.

This book assumes familiarity with accounting. If you've completed all your basic accounting courses, the material expands on interpreting financial statements. As far as the analysis portion, it covers the basics.The author presents a ratio, and for the most part, gives a simple explanation, followed by practical examples. For the most part the book is a series of case studies with financial statements and applying ratios. There are a fair amount of exerpts from different firms from different industries. Another aspect is the author cites references for topics such as GAAP rules or regulations. The references were quite useful in verifying the textbook material and applicability. For example, by following the references you could find that some of the issues were still under consideration and you could expect a possible change in the future.The textbook was helpful in understanding the financial statement notes. Most firms do disclose information, the bad part is that it's overlooked or users don't understand it. The ratios are very simple, the hard part is interpreting it's significance in relation to other ratos. For example, profitability ratios may look great, but the equity or liability ratios look horrible. As a whole, the book is a good reference in the future.Hopefully the author will add an appendice with a guided walkthrough of retrieving financial statements through Edgar and highlighting points of interest in a specific statement,
This Book is written at a very high level , more suitable for those who already have a good background in accountancy...for beginners this book with minimal illustrations would be unsuitable. The exercises at the end of each chapter are at a very high level , quite comprehensive and tricky at times as such requires adequate knowledge and help of instructor to solve them . This book must be supplemented(used along with) a beginner level accountancy book that gives strong foundation .
I received this book yesterday, 7/1/16 The actual content of the book is fine. Its the condition of the book that is horrible. It's a hard back book, with a torn and broken spine. Its seem to be just holding together. I will put a book cover over it to help hold it together while I get though my class, but I'm thankful I did not purchase this book. I've seen book buyers who would turn books away for less. As a rental, I recommend as the books are rented and returned have a standard checklist of what's acceptable and what's not before a book goes out for rental. Thank you.
I got this book for a finance class. It's a nice addition to my accounting curriculum and helps make me better at understanding how different numbers affect the bottom lines and understanding more about financial analysis.
Excellent base for those learning financial analysis. There are not many books out there to help teach credit decision making and this one is extremely useful with its defined terms and excellent examples. I highly recommend for those in a credit analyst/financial analyst role.
Overall this is dry reading and one of the most boring books I have ever read. There are some interesting spots, but they are few and far between. I like the layout of the questions and cases studies because they helped to determine how well I was grasping the information. i do like how the various ratios are all in either front or back cover of the book.
There is a card included in the book that used to be linked to a website for data gathering for research purposes. This site doesn't exist anymore and as such makes buying the new product with the unique unused code not worth the price.

This is horrible. It mostly deals with being a cocktail waitress at a strip club and repeats itself many times. Basically a collection of stories from the author. I had bought it to have a PHYSICAL book like some of the better tip increasing books that are eBooks only, ugh.Nothing new here.

This book exceeded my expectations; I've fallen in love lately with these Dover books of artists' works. The full-page reproductions are top-notch and the selection creates a broad overview of the Art Nouveau/Jugendstil movement by its most famous and arguably most characteristic artist. You have Mucha himself to thank for that, as this is simply a recollation of images from his own book, though the plates are in a different order (for the purists, a chart is included referencing the pages to Mucha's original order).It's not as thorough or lavish as the definitive book Alphonse Mucha by Sarah Mucha, but then it's also less than half the price and much more portable. There's little enough overlap between the two that it's worth buying both, and in my opinion most of the reproductions (other than the posters) are better in this Dover book. If you're looking for a broad overview and reference of the Art Nouveau style, this Dover book is the one to get, whereas if you want a more focused look at Mucha's work and life, particularly his ornamental panels featuring Sarah Bernhardt and other women, you'll want to pick up Sarah Mucha's book (or perhaps the other Dover book, Drawings of Mucha: 70 Works by Alphonse Maria Mucha Including 9 in Full Color.)
Bought this book thinking I was going to find colorful pictures and designs. First of all it's only 70 pages. Then when I opened it I found out almost 80% of the pictures, even when they were full page, were in black and white. An overall observation is the lack of quality on the drawings and pics, they seem like washed out and lacking contrast. The book is OK for the price, especially if you are designing jewelry or clothing, I think there are better options, I would suggest Treasury of Art Nouveau Design & Ornament (Dover Pictorial Archive)

We bought a copy as a Christmas present for our daughter but we liked it so much we got three more copies (one for our other daughter, one for us and the other for a friend). Great collection of recipes and ideas for crock pot cooking Italian style. It covers everything from soups to seafood to beef to poultry to sauces to veggies to desserts. I've started using the crock pot more often and books like The Italian Slow Cooker are an excellent source for ideas to make something really tasty with a minimum of effort.
Growing up I loved my grandmother's chicken Ragu and couldn't replicate the recipe until now: tender chicken cooked until it is falling off the bone in a savory marinara. I've made some soups as well and they've been delicious. Having the right slow cooker makes a difference. I use an All-Clad that browns/sears before the slow cooking process begins.
I absolutely love this book! I bought 3 of her books and I love them all. I bought these books, because I had just purchased my first slow cooker and even though I'm a great cook, I did not know how to cook with a slow cooker. This and her other books are helping me make the most of my slow cooker. Some people complain that they have to do preliminary steps... but that is what you have to do to have flavorfull food. This isn't 'instant' food cooking. These are traditional recipes converted for the slow cooker. Love it!!!
The Italian Slow Cooker provides hearty Italian recipes designed for your home crockpot. The recipes are very straight-forward and utilize easy to find or already have them in the pantry ingredients for dinners that taste unbelievably rich and hearty. Be forewarned, this is not a "dump it in the crockpot and leave it" kind of book. The author makes the basic assumption that you are willing to put a minimum of extra work into your recipe to yield superior results. Most of this extra work involves browning your meat in a skillet before loading it into the cooker. I find this takes little effort on my part and adds a nice complexity beyond the typical pallid, uninteresting meat of most slow cooker recipes.The author has a variety of short tidbits to begin the book to get you started. She says the ideal crockpot for her recipes is 5-7 quarts. She lists what to look for in a slow cook clooker and gives you a basic explanation of what she considers "must haves" in an Italian pantry. Once more, no exotic or hard to find ingredients.Chapters include: soups; sauces for pasta; risotto, polenta, and grains; seafood; eggs, chicken, and turkey; beef, veal, pork and lamb; vegetables and dried legumes; and desserts. Scicolone begins each recipe with a brief introduction about her inspiration for it or a handy cooking note and quickly proceeds to the recipe. She is a very direct and easy to understand cookbook author. I really applaud her for making Italian recipes that do genuinely seem like the soul food of an Italian grandmother.Her finished dishes are handsomely photographed as well. We just ate her spareribs with spicy sausages and were blown away by the flavor--one caveat, try to skim some of the fat that rises to to the top of the cooker for a less rich and more tomatoey sauce if this idea appeals to you.The pasta sauce chapter as well as the beef, veal, pork, and lamb chapter are really getting our interest. I admit that the small number of pasta sauce recipes did reflect my final rating of the book. There are also numerous recipes for things such as polenta out of the crockpot. I can easily make such items in no time flat on my stovetop while I utilize the slow cooker for something far more sumptuous. I don't want to wander into the territory of having two or three slow cookers simmering away just to get a full dinner on the table although I admire that she adapted some basic dishes to the slow cooker. Also, the paperback does not stay open on its own.I am so happy to add this to my cookbook collection. With fall approaching, this cookbook will be doing double duty. We are so happy with the results of this book that we will be buying The French Slow Cooker soon. Enjoy.
If you're a novice cook or beginner with a slow cooker then this might be a a good starting point. As a good cook who loves to work with flavours, I was expecting more from this cookbook and hoping for some new delicious recipes. I wasn't exactly "wowed" by the recipes to be honest. There was nothing new or very exciting apart from maybe 2 recipes in the whole book the rest were ok. I tried the spring veal ragu with vegetables over the weekend and while it was ok it lacked a bit of flavour. I'm hoping that the flavours will be enhanced after a few days of soaking in the sauce. (Day 3). I ordered the French slow cooking book at the same time so hoping it's a bit more exciting.
Love this cookbook. I first took it out of the library, and tried recipes. Started with the risotto. Looking forward to using it a lot this winter. I have gotten a lot of great recipes from Michele's other Italian cookbook, which is why I tried this in the first place.
This book takes me back to the 70's when crock pots were all the rage. It really is an easy way to put good food on the table without sacrificing color, taste, or nutrition. I have already been using the French slow cooker book and have received many compliments. So far, I have only made one meal (pasta fagioli), but it was delicious and made from items I already had in my kitchen. This book is not for people not willing to make a little effort. it is not "throw in a chicken, add sour cream, go away and come back to dinner 5 hours later." The flavors are unique and will have family and guests wanting to know your secret. Tell them it was because of your recent trip to Italy........
Not only am I half Italian, but I have lived there for several years. This is not only authentic but makes each dish easy and tasty! I only wish I had added this cookbook to my collection MUCH earlier!!!
