Part of the great story of the American Revolution is how the Colonists used their more accurate rifles, along with woodcraft learned from the Indians, to defeat the British soldier who relied on smoothbore muskets and unaimed fire in ranks. Like most legends, there's an element of truth to the story, but it's far from the whole truth. Back in 1776 there was a heated debate on the effectiveness of massed fire versus aimed fire, and that debate continued through every war this country fought. It even continues to this day.During the American Civil War the US Army resisted adopting the new repeating arms from Henry and Sharps, even as they were being purchased by some units with their own money. The repeaters weren't powerful enough, and encouraged troops to waste ammunition, said the Army, and even an order from Lincoln wash't enough to get them to change. As late as the Spanish-American War the same debate was being fought between those who favored the standard single-shot rifle, and those who supported the new European-styled bolt-action Krag-Johnson, which delivered a higher rate of fire.A few years later, on the eve of World War 1, many fought the introduction of the new Springfield rifle, a modern bolt-action design heavily borrowed from Mauser that used a European-style bullet of only .30 caliber. Nonsense, the traditionalists argued. You need the spacing power of the good old .45-70! And in World War II there were even a few commanding generals, WWI vets themselves, who insisted that their troops be armed with the good old Springfield rather than the new Garand semi-automatic- itself generally acknowledged as the best infantryman's weapon in the war.After WWII there was the battle over a new gun that became the M-14, and this time it involved our NATO partners as well. The Army won, largely because England and Europe were still recovering from the war. When we entered Vietnam another new weapon set the traditionalists against the progressives: The M-16. And the battle continued in the Gulf, as the new M-4- a gun designed for short ranges and high rate of fire- went up against the M-16.Author Alexander Rose is a deft hand with historical narrative and does a great job of presenting the people, the debates, and the history surrounding all these battles- I learned quite a bit reading this book. Rose is at his best dealing with the personalities that make up this narrative- soldiers, politicians, inventors, and all manner of eccentrics and curious characters. He's on less solid ground when it comes to technical matters, and those with a background in arms will find a few jarring errors whenever he gets into technical explanation. The third lug on the Springfield bolt was to insure against the first two failing and sending the bolt flying backwards; Rose says it was to prevent the chamber exploding. Not quite the same thing. His discussion of the M-16 problems seriously understates the problem of corrosion, which resulted from the Army's refusal to spend a few extra dollars to have Colt chrome-plate the barrel and chamber. His discussion of Kalishnakov does note the debt the AK-47 owed to German guns, but does't note that it was a group of engineers and gunsmiths who designed and built the rifle for which the man received all the credit. (For the definitive stories on the M-16 and the AK, as well as other fascinating historical stories about arms in the modern age, see C.J. Chiver's The Gun, an excellent book)Details aside, this is a very good book, with a lot of material that I don't think has been discussed in popular histories before. It's a good compliment to Chivers' book, with more detail on the period from the Revolutionary War through WWI, and a fine addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in the history of arms and armies.
Wanna "know" what you're talking about when it comes to the history of American firearms? Well pilgrim read this book. The transition from the M-1 Garand to the M-16 is especially well described and heart breaking because of the way it was introduced to fighting men in Vietnam. The difference of stick and ball gunpowder in this weapon's ammunition needs to be exposed as one of the root causes of its fail to fire blues. And to all who lionize the M-14 ( the stopgap between the M-1 and the M-16) the true story of why the M-14 and why it was an inferior weapon as opposed to the communist AK. A damn good read IMHO.
With 'American Rifle' mr. Rose has provided the world with a very informative book. Starting in the late 1700s and culminating in 2008 Rose takes the reader behind the scenes, political and technical, and shows the road the American service rifle had taken through the ages in a way no other author has done before. History and technical books often make very boring reading one has to struggle through to collect the facts you need. Not so with the 'American Rifle'. It is eminently entertaining reading for those with a more than passing interest in American service rifles and serious students alike. Even so this is and remains a reference work. It is not lavishly illustrated, but the 50 odd informative b&w illustrations included provide the necessary touch. The last 82 of its 495 pages consist of footnote references, credits and an extensive index, which all add immensely to the value of the book for a student of the topic. It is a must-buy for military enthusiasts and a nice to have for all firearm buffs. Apart from the fancy embossed dust jacket, the book, as expected, has a business-like but suprizingly palatable design. It is sturdy and well-produced. The font and the paper type combine to offer easy reading. I would like to see more of this type of book from mr. Rose.
This is a terrific work, well researched and engaging. One of the best parts of this format is that the references are hotlinked within the text. In other words, when a passage in the book refers to a research work the author used, the superscript is a hotlink to the references section, where the reader may get more information on the passage. There is a handy link in the references page which then returns the reader to the passage. Very nice, especially in a work like this.As for the book itself, it did suffer from some formatting issues, mainly hyphenated words which, in the original, were obviously at the end of a line. However, this only distracted me a little. The content is informative and engaging, the conclusions drawn are apt, and the history given was, at least for me, something not commonly taught or learned.I appreciated Mr. Rose's efforts with this book and look forward to reading more of his works.

As a teacher I have worked with this age students (young adults) for over 20 years. and Sonenblick hits it right on the head with his character that every young teenager will understand. Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie is a true classic.
I had the opportunity to hear Jordan Sonnenblick speak to a group of middle school students last week when I was substitute teaching. I had already read After Ever After, the sequel to the book Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie, but had not read anything else he had written. I was impressed by what Jordan shared with the kids. He used to be an 8th grade English teacher and he knows how to talk to middle school kids. He told the story behind the book Drums, Girls, & Dangerous Pie, which was very interesting and I decided to read this book.This book is about an 8th grade boy whose 4 year old brother gets Leukemia and how that affects him and his family. Jordan wrote this book because when he was teaching 8th grade, he had a student whose younger brother had cancer and he looked for a book for her about a middle school student with a sibling who had cancer and he could not find any. The book tells how when Jordan's brother was diagnosed with cancer, it threw his family into crisis mode, he stopped doing schoolwork, played the drums more, and how his parents and family life were affected. He did a good job of telling the story and I think that this book can help middle school kids to understand how cancer can affect a family. It is also just a really good story.I enjoyed this book and it's sequel and look forward to reading his other books.Mr. Sonnenblick's newest book, Curveball: The Year I Lost My Grip , is coming out on March 1 of this year and he says that if people pre-order it, he can be on the New York Times Best Seller List and his mother will be proud of him.
This book is great! I read this simultaneously with my 13 year old so we could discuss it along the way. I think we both learned a thing or two about when life throws out a curve ball, how to be friends and also how to be a good brother and be a family. My son thought the book was excellent in how it was written and enjoyed knowing how Steven was feeling and coping through all that was occurring. I would highly recommend this book to middle and high school aged kids and also adults.
I'm not normally a big fan of realistic fiction, but I picked this book up after it was recommended to me by some friends. I put it off for about three years before I broke down and bought the book. Thankfully it did not disappoint.Steven is a normal eighth grade boy. He's in band and has a crush on a girl way out of his league. He lives with his brother (Jeffery) and two parents. His life is fairly stable. One of the biggest problems he has is a brother about eight years younger than him who finds pleasure in making his older brother miserable. When a nose bleed turns bad, he finds himself living in his brothers shadow. He begins to wish that his little brother could be like he was before October, when he had the life changing nose bleed. This book deals with the topic of childhood cancer with a new angle. Trust me when I say that people tend to forget about the brothers and sisters of those diagnosed. They see it all. The book goes at the topic in a way that not many books do. The characters seemed real. Several times I wanted to talk with Steven so badly it hurt.This book seemed to get a little close to home. I know a girl whose younger brother was diagnosed with cancer when he was three. She was in middle school like Steven and many of the things I saw her go through, Steven went through as well. So many of the small things added up. When Steven called Jeffy buddy boy reminded me of all the times I've called my own brother that. Steven's world is real, and this book crafted it perfectly.
I read this book based on the recommendation of my youngest son. He is reading this book in his Literacy class in 6th Grade and even half way through, he loved it enough to want me to read it so we could "talk about it." I happen to read faster than my son, especially since he's only reading during class time (this is a group read,) but I enjoyed it as well.The title does not give any clues as to what the subject matter will be, and I hadn't read any blurbs so I was in for an emotional ride when I got to the heart of the story. Be prepared for some tears and heartache as you read. But, in the same way stories like The Fault in Our Stars or Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, there will be times when you find humor in the telling as well. The blending and merging of these two vastly different emotions is quite often a pleasant experience. I was also very impressed with the writing style and the voice being used to tell the story. I find it so rare in my reading to have a adolescent male point of view. So often, young adult books are told from a female perspective. Without giving spoilers, I have to say that I also like that the story is told from the perspective of a sibling of whom the main part of the story is about. I am definitely impressed that the school my children go to is using this book in their 6th grade classes, and I think it's a good one for young adults to read.

I was so looking forward to this book but unfortunately, it was fell short on so many levels. From the title, it appears to be a very niche based book on how to start a personal injury practice but as you start digging into the material the author speaks in general terms (write a business plan, set goals, project revenues). Ok. so how? I want to know on average what can I expect to settle a case for before filing suit? How about per type of case (auto, slip, and fall, trip, and fall). Ok, it depends? give me anything, something. Ok, can't? Direct me to some resources to figure it out. Nowhere is this data or even a helpful place to seek it. How can I project revenues if I have no idea what to expect? The CD has basic forms that lack detail. I included some pics so you can see what I'm talking about. The only thing maybe worth the value in this book are the checklist, but again nothing you can't find online. I wish this book had more Especially for the $69.95 MSRP price tag. I wish this book had more. It misses the mark for me.

I guess I was expecting more species but I've found that flowers in my desert area are missing from a lot of references.
I was able to attend a lecture by Meg Quinn, and signed up for another. This guide was written for my area. I wish she had included a few extra small pictures of seed pods and/or seeds.
I like this book, but I wish it included more wildflowers. It is a limited resource.

If you "blink" you might miss them. Not literally, of course, for each year some desert wildflowers bloom, particular in the shady areas of arroyos. Every few years or so, conditions in the desert become more optimal, better amounts of moisture coupled with the right temperatures and sunlight, and then suddenly the proverbial "carpets" of desert flowers erupt. Either way, the flowers of the desert can attract, and even seduce. Meg Quinn has written a solid guide about the flowers along the way on your desert hikes.The book contains a good map outlining the extent of the four principal deserts of the American Southwest: Chihuahuan, the Great Basin, Sonoran, and Mojave. She admits that her selection of flowers is weight more towards the latter two. Eighty-four desert flowers are identified: one to each page, with a quality picture sufficient for identification purposes. The common name of the flower heads each page, followed by its scientific (Latin) name, along with the flower's "family." This is followed by a brief (3-5 sentence) description of its habitat and characteristics. The flower's range and elevation are highlighted. At the end, there is a brief glossary and bibliography.Favorites? The Desert Paintbrush, and the Sacred Datura. Certainly they are easy to identify!Overall, a solid, useful guidebook, for anyone living in the Southwest, or passing through. 4-stars.
Wildflowers of The Desert Southwest has good high resolution photos which helps in identifying flowers. Most older books have low rez hard to see photos. This book has great to the point descriptions. The only down side is there needs to be more flowers included. So far every Desert flower I saw or photographed was in the book. I would encourage the author to expand this body of work and include more flowers with high rez detailed photos. You won't be disappointed buying this book as it is better than most of the books I have seen being sold.

It's a great book if you a looking for a broad view on Korean history. It doesn't dwell on details, mainly during ancient and medieval eras, but is well accomplished when dealing with more recent events.
This is an excellent primer on Korean history. It is clear and concise in presenting such events and provides an excellent Korean perspective on the events while acknowledging other possible perspectives.
Like: a comprehensive history, clearly organized. Chronologically oriented.Dislike: a bit dry. The maps could have been better.It is, as part of the "Essential Series," in line and quite good.
For a Korean history book it is very good doesn't go too deep but doesn't really leave you wanting to know more, recommended

Good information but doesn't go into deep detail.Reading was significantly hindered by writing that was slightly pretentious and sometimes difficult to understand; I've had no issue reading other texts for any of my classes, but I found myself going back occasionally and rereading passages because of poor sentence structure and/or redundant use of vocabulary. (Why use the word "capitulated" instead of "surrendered"? It makes no sense.)

THE most useful book and pattern adjusting information I have laid my hands on in years. I thought I would give it a try since I have been sewing for years. This is an excellent "Beginners" book for those just starting out. Simple and easy to understand. Thank you Nancy Zieman.
Anything by Nancy Zieman is out of the park great. This is my continuous go-to book. I have this in hard copy, but as I am trying to streamline everything, I am giving up my hard copy and going digital.I have learned a lot from her over the years, and anything she has is worth it!
In the seventies, Nancy Zieman showed a series on her PBS show. My parents were getting ready to go to Europe on a much hoped for vacation. But, my mom was rather on the large size. She'd gone to several stores looking for outfits that she could wear and feel comfortable in. No luck.So, she brought out her tapes of Nancy's shows and after viewing them, I was able to alter patterns and construct several outfits and blouses Mom could wear and feel presentable in.Her outfits were color coordinated of natural fibers, so she could mix and match on her 6 week tour. She got several compliments from other ladies on the tour; she did look good, too.However, Mom stored her VHS tapes in the attic and they didn't survive the heat. When I was faced with a similar problem...Well, it's been about 40 years since using those techniques and I didn't feel confident enough cutting into cotton, linen and silk before referring to those wonderful techniques.Well, the book is exactly what is needed.Now, I'll look good and feel comfortable watching my daughter get married and won't embarrass her on their wedding cruise.

What eye opening method is slide and pivoting technique to adjust to your size.In Japan, usually we cut in half and add/abstract the measurement, but I had been in doubt because it does not fit to change each part of your body such as abstracting your waist while adding your hip. So this book really answered my question.Also there are not many fitting instruction book nor course are available in Japan. Even at school of fashion does not teach fitting. I admit there are so many people with so many type of bodice, that is why fitting books and course (both on-line and off-line), which is very envying to me!Only a couple of things I do not like is that there is no page info. I absolutely love this book and method. It clarified the adjustment process to use on patterns to make clothes fit me better. I've since used the pivot method on a blouse and it fits me beautifully! I also used her slide method, in conjunction changes advised from with "Pants for Real People," on a pair of shorts that made the pattern adjustment easy and flawless. I would highly recommend purchasing this book if your have a body shape that is not the "standard" shape. I can't wait to make more beautiful clothes that actually fit me comfortably!
It was a very good book for some basic changes. It doesn't adequately cover the multiple changes I would consider common. Hard to make all the adjustments needed for our small frames, large cup sizes, sway back etc. I know you can't have every scenario, but I felt it was a little abbreviated for the multiple adjustments.
Nancy presents a very logical and easy to understand way to fit your patterns to your body. Her approach differs from the tissue fitting method and seems easier to do. This book is well illustrated and well organized.
I've been sewing for over 50 years and I've gotten plumper since I started so I need to be able to alter patterns to fit better. I went to a class for a system to alter patterns but by the time I would have bought all the tools and patterns it would have been over $150. This book covers a system that is very similar to the expensive one and I know that Nancy Zieman is a very good seamstress. I look forward to making some pajama bottoms for my husband that will fit without being baggy and misshapen.
