I knew I had some subconscious or unconscious "issues" from having been adopted, but I didn't truly understand them until I read this book. If you are adopted, get this book. If you have adopted children - or are even thinking about doing so - get this book. I learned a lot about myself while reading this - it explained a lot of my behavior as a child, and even as an adult. Being adopted IS traumatic, no matter what age it happens at - I was adopted as a baby, but still had issues because of it. My parents used to tell me that I was "chosen," and while they were trying to make me feel good and "special," it always made me sad to hear. Not because I didn't like my adoptive parents, but because - even as a child - I knew inside somewhere that to be "chosen," I first had to be given away. I didn't understand those sad feelings as a child, but thanks to this book, I understand them now.
I was initially excited to read this book but that quickly turned into absolute disappointment, there are several items that I cannot get past and even disagree with the author on certain subjects. I can also admit that it does have a few good points but they are all overshadowed by the author’s condescending tone and disparaging remarks about being an adoptive parent. The author is incredibly discouraging toward the adoption process in general. The book is incredibly biased, jaded and one sided. Perhaps it is slanted that way because of the author’s own troubled experiences with her adopted child, however her personal opinions are treated as facts throughout the book, and this is another concern for me personally. Several of the author’s statements that are not true or verifiable as the book seems unbalanced and speaks in near absolutes. Her conclusions throughout the book are unsupported yet absolute, her supporting ‘evidence’ for her arguments are either her personal experiences, biased observations, or selected anecdotes.Reading the book makes the adoptive parent feel as though they are not and will never be able to provide enough of a supportive and loving family environment for a child and I can only imagine that it makes an adoptee feel as though they are a victim of adoption with a horrible wound that will never heal, this revelation somehow does not seem at all therapeutic to me at all. Throughout the book she states with certainty that any child born via a surrogate mother will have a primal wound, as well as a child who was in the NICU, or an adopted child, and she starts to hint that she believes that children whose mothers work full time are going to have primal wounds as well.Again, I feel like the book did have a few good points, but If you are going to read a book on this topic, perhaps there is another similar book that is more well-rounded, unbiased and encouraging that would benefit the adoptive parents understanding of the subject, the adoptive child, and the birth mother/birth family. I personally found “The Connected Child†to be a much more uplifting and inspirational read that addresses the adoption of a child who’s experienced early loss of a birth parent through a more hopeful and adoption-positive light with the emphasis that adoptive parents can help bring hope and healing to a child.I do not ever really feel compelled to write reviews on anything but this is one book that I feel I must caution others about reading. The only reason that this book gets a one-star review from me is due to the simple fact that I cannot select a 0 star rating or less.
Very good! I was required to read this book for my spiritual journey to Korea last summer. I thought this book wouldn't apply to me as an adoptee and that it would be nothing but a required read. I was absolutely wrong. The first part of the section wasn't totally relating to me. But as soon as I hit the second section, it hit home. Everything the author discussed about the primal wound matched me so much. I have a lot of the book highlighted. It was a very good read. I would highly recommend it for all adoptees. If you're like me, thinking it won't apply to you, I think you will be highly surprised like I was.
This is one of the most important books ever written about adoption. As an adult adoptee, I have to admit that it was painful to read but it was painful because what is written is so true. I highly recommend that both adoptees and adoptive parents, or prospective adoptive parents read this book. How helpful this would have been to my own adoptive parents. How little they truly understood about adopting children can't be understated. A child is NOT a blank slate that remembers nothing of their biological mother. In fact, the opposite is true. This is a must read. It will truly help you find the truth of what a child endures when they are taken away from their mother. I have great respect for Nancy Verrier for having the courage to write this book. Nancy, you have helped thousands by the information you've given in this book. I thank you personally!!
This may be the most powerful and profound book ever written about adoption. It is extremely helpful for all parties involved in adoption whether you're the adoptee, birth parents or the parent of an adopted child. There is just SO much false information in the "mainstream version" of adoption, this book truly dispels the myths and cuts to the heart of the matter. It's helpful beyond words. This issue is SO deep and SO misunderstood. Having this book out there in the world is a true blessing, especially if your searching for your birth parents, like I was.
Thank you! It explains so much! So sad it took me 50 years to understand myself and the primal real-life trauma experienced shortly after birth. The book is profound and compassionate. I suggest reading, contemplating and letting this book soak in for a while. Her follow-up book is a real kick in the ass. Brace yourself.

Extremely short and not much more info than a well written blog post.
This book is more of a pamphlet than a how-to book. I was very disappointed at the brevity of the information in the book. They cover a lot of topics, but none of them well. It has some nice color pictures, and I gleaned one or two things from it, but overall you can find a much better book for the money.
This book is PACKED with fantastic information. Excellent photography and very clear information. I only hope that this Duo has written other books, which I'll be looking for right now!
I had taken a leather (first class) in a local leather shop and so when I picked up this book from Amazon I knew right away that the superb photos would benefit my initial introduction to leather crafting. If you are experienced, this book is probably not for you as you would already know all about dyes, tools, patterns, etc. But for a beginner, it's a class by itself!
Good number of small projects and techniques in the book. Great first book if you want some introductory leather projects with quick results, but not great if you want the more detailed techniques or projects beyond the basics.
I sat down and stopped what I was doing and carefully skimmed through the book no what the book does is give you a great education in the techniques involved in making you leather items beautiful and marketable. I especiially liked the part that showed me how to take a stylus and make my own designs using my creativity. Now there are other parts that you have to learn how to do and learn how to do it right that would also help you to make sales. I applaud the authors of this work highly.
The book overall contains great information. Could be a lot better with added projects to reinforce the information given. If you are looking for easy projects to complete. This book does not come with any. Just tips on how to stamp, carve and couple other stuff.
This book covers the basics on most categories of leather working. You can search a lot of places and get excellent how-tos, but how do you know which area of leathr working you would like the best? Where to start? This book shows you the different art/craft areas and you can gauge the difficulty or ease for you, tools you will need, and what you might like to try. Instructions are to the point and brief, but caveats of what to avoid and what not to do are included. That makes it easy to know what videos and and other sources you might like to search for. Try to find some used tools or a leather working community to get started, if you like, but you can really get started with just this book and some tools and leather.

Norman Cohn's book 'The Pursuit of the Millennium' is a classic work for a reason: it is outstanding history and well written. Like most very good histories, it illuminates the past and has implications for the present as well.Cohn's topic is 'Millenarianism' in the Middle Ages, or the recurring emergence of a collective of "faithful" under the leadership of a charismatic prophet (or prophets) who believe that the world will imminently be transformed into an earthly paradise inhabited by the "select" (i.e., themselves). This Edenic existence will last 1,000 years and then the Last Judgement will forever sort all mankind into the camps of Heaven and Hell. The basis of the millennial paradigm is rooted in the Book of Daniel (Ch. VII: Daniel's Dream) and the Book of Revelation (Ch. XX), as well as the enduring legend that there could be a return to what was wishfully assumed to be mankind's original egalitarian and plentiful existence.Millenarianism flourished in the Middle Ages in response to anxious and disorienting social conditions, such as rapid population growth and widespread agricultural failures in the High Middle Ages and the Black Death of the Late Middle Ages. The most fervent followers were the marginalized poor whose place within the social structure and whose very survival was under threat. A prophet, who assumed the role of messiah, offered the poor a chance to be among the "select" or elite.Cohn surveys a series of Millenarian outbreaks, from the poor's participation in the First Crusade (c. 1100), to the English Peasants' Revolt (1381), to the Hussite Rebellion, and it's offspring, the Taborites of Bohemia (c. 1425), to the German Peasants' War fostered by Thomas Müntzer (c.1525), and through the Anabaptist Revolt at Munster (c. 1530).Modern corollaries of millenarianism are not difficult to conjure; one need only think of Nazi Germany and Hitler's "Thousand-Year Reich" for an obvious echo. Its' "select" - the Volk - largely supported a martial spirit and an intent on conquering "lebensraum" (not unlike the First Crusade). Of course the Nazis grasped power out of the disorienting economic and social conditions of the Weimar Republic. Perhaps no one made better use of these parallels between the Middle Ages' phenomenon and more recent history than Friedrich Reck did in his novella A History of the Münster Anabaptists: Inner Emigration and the Third Reich: A Critical Edition of Friedrich Reck-Malleczewen's Bockelson: A Tale of Mass Insanity (an edition which also includes background commentary and critical exposition).Cohn concludes his book with reference to the present, where he claims the enduring underpinnings of millenarianism continue to exist in secular forms.
This is a wild book. It describes dark times when people are in despair. At these times, and it happens repeatedly, someone decides that he is the Redeemer of the weak. These redeemers create havoc, until the ruling powers decide to put an end to the disturbance.This is fascinating, little-known history of Europe. These folks make Mad Max look like a sissy. This is mean and it is all true.
Cohn's "Pursuit of the Millennium" has aged well and nearing 50 years of age it is deservedly a classic. Its subjet might be considered by some to be esoteric: it deals with prophets from middle age Europe who led others to believe that the end of times was at hand, and that they had been chosen by God to purify the world in preparation for the Kingdom of the Last Days, and with pantheistic mystical anarchists who believed that they could do no evil because they had connected with their divine essences. In most cases these figures are virtual unknowns even for people who like history. The few that still turn up are Thomas Müntzer, the leader of the rebellious peasants who were exterminated in the Battle of Frankenhausen (a character in the historical fiction pastiche "Q" by Luther Blisset) and John of Leyden, the tailor who created a totalitarian kingdom of saints in Münster. For the revolutionary millennarians the tale is a bit repetitive, and it usually went like this: a former priest or a hermit with a violent disposition concludes, after meditating for a long time, that he is living at the end of times and that he is God/ he is a god/ he has been chosen by God or a god to lead the just and the good in a final, apocalyptic, war against Antichrist and his followers, to usher in the millennium of the saints announced by John the Divine, prior to the end of the world and the final reckoning. He also shows that generally poor people have had rational aims: to use pressure in order to improve their lot by acquisition of certain rights. Only a minority has felt the attraction of millennarian revolutions, and these usually have been uprooted people without a settled role. Also, these revolutionary initiatives were able to succeed (even if for a short while) only in times of chaos or unrest (i.e., the Crusades, visitations of the plague or black death, economic crises, etc.). Usually the self-appointed prophets used the social disruption in order to further their cause and take advantage from the momentary weakness of defenders of the status quo.Cohn is a sober commentator who shows that recent historians have sometimes ignored the evidence to further a political agenda. Thus, leftist historians sometimes refused to acknowledge some activities of the prophets whom they regarded as protorevolutionaries (such as their inclination to institutionalized promiscuity or their remarkably violent language), probably in order to maintain their status as predecessors of current "progressives".An interesting conclusion from the reading of the book is that, contrary to what many think, ideas are not a neutral good to be chosen by informed customers in an efficient marketplace. Some ideas appeal to dark places in people's minds: these are dangerous ideas, and parents and teachers would do well to instruct their children, so that they do not succumb. One such idea is that "God" is in everything, and that when a person becomes aware of this he or she becomes entirely free and can follow his or her desires without any negative ethical implication. Another way of putting this is that nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so, as Hamlet said. This type of belief might lead a person to the most brutal behaviors without any perception that they had done ill. This is a very common opinion nowadays, and in fact both the millennarists and the mystical anarchists have their successors nowadays. Today, the center of millennarian agitation is surely the USA, were many people believe that the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse) is a play-by-play description of the end of the world and that they will live to see it happen. And many new age sects (including Scientology) appear to hold the belief that we can become gods and be free of conventional morality and ethics.In his conclusion Cohn suggests that many radical movements of the XX century are in fact new versions of the old millennarian revolutionary heresies. There can be no doubt that this is the case: human motivations change little over time. What changes is the language in which they are articulated. In a religious era, the language and imagery were religious. in a godless age the language attempts to be scientific and logical. But underneath there beats the same old hope: the hope to see evil punished and evildoers destroyed, to be part of a chosen elite with a new understanding of the nature of reality, and an exhilarating vision of a better future through hardship and strife. We can all empathise with these feelings. Action movies, comic books, tragedies, country music and soap operas resonate for many of us because they take their inspiration from some of these elements. I only regret that Cohn did not expand the point, although other authors have done so, most notably Michel Burleigh, who in his recent two volume history on the clashes between politics and religion from the French Revolution to our days has shown that much of what passes for politics is in reality religion by another name, and how the most revolutionary creeds of the XX century were really millennarian sects.And Cohn's perspective is so pertinent that it even explains the rise of Islamic fundamentalism tinged with visions of a holy war that will redeem the world and turn into the Umma, the community of the believers. The followers of fundamentalism have been the large masses of uprooted peasants without a clear role in a modernizing world, and their leaders have been intellectuals or semi-intellectuals who can understand how the world works but want no part of it, other than to redeem it in an apocalytic struggle. Their counterparts in other religions are very similar to them: people who want to find a meaning for lives that provide none, people who are sensitive to unfairness and who instinctively resonate with violence and retribution, people who yearn for zoroastrian visions of entirely distinct good and bad. As ever, for these people, the new millennium of peace and joy is just around the corner, although sadly it can only come about on mountains of corpses and through rivers of blood.
This book dives in-depth to what would seem on the surface to be a highly specialized, narrow topic - apocalyptic social movements around 1000 A.D. Although occasionally dense, this is nevertheless an excellent book that is thought-provoking and far-reaching. Here you will find some interesting stories about obscure figures whose rantings were seriously believed by followers who reoriented their lives based solely upon the fanciful predictions of end times. (Quite a number of these prophets end up executed or killed by mobs). The passage on the flagellants - a group of men who went from town to town beating themselves til they bled, moving onlookers to tears - is one of the strangest social movements in history. After reading this book, one grasps fully the herd mentality and paranoia that some social movements succumb to.
Norman Cohn was certainly a commanding intellect and scholar. But his book, despite its stateliness and seeming impartiality, focuses only on the negative aspects of religious non-conformity. Indirectly, it is an expression of an unquestioned faith in orthodox Catholic dogma, and in those who enforce it.

Some of the crafts and art forms covered in this book are technical and I wouldn't try them. I know Batik, and found a serious error (don't "wring out" your cloth when removing it from the dye, it will ruin your project) in the instructions, which leads me to believe there may be errors in the instructions of other projects as well. Also, some of the additions seemed to be "filler" rather than interesting possibilities of something to make. There are some well presented instructions of interesting and plausible projects, however, and I bought this book for a crafty friend because I thought it would help her with making her Christmas gifts.
What a fun book!! This book is great for those wishing to expand their "craftiness". It is clearly a book designed to "get your feet wet" into many different techniques. Of course, there are projects I wouldn't do, such as knitting socks or sewing a child's shirt, but there are plenty of others I found fascinating enough to try. The book is very well rounded with lots of crafts represented. Most of the projects are beginner friendly and give you enough information to expand and create your own designs. Some require several tools and materials that may be hard to find in rural areas (like mine!) but there are enough simple projects to work on until you can find or order materials for the rest!!
Really great assortment of DIY projects. You can easily expand on them with your own ideas. I like how it pulls from all different areas so you learn a lot of different things. Book is well designed and projects are easy to follow. There are a lot of repetitive DIY books out there, but this one surprised me. I am extremely satisfied with this book.
I have tons of crafts books, I love looking up ideas online, but I have never seen a book like this. Craft books have had to step things up because of pinterest and other digital means of DIY sources- this book has faced that challenge and proves the superiority of pages over a screen. Every page is beautiful and exciting to leaf through- I will honestly try most of these ideas. I have not been this inspired in a long time!! Thank you, Lena Corwin!
Most of the projects are simple - almost too simple. Many of them I had seen before on tv or in magazines. But I will say there were a few that I will use - maybe 3-5. The rest of the projects, well I will probably give the book away after a while..Good quality printing and photos.
This is an amazing craft book! I have followed most of these designers for years and am so inspired by their aesthetic and taste. The projects here are lovely, interesting and inspiring. Some of the projects chosen by the different designers surprised me -such a variety...all beautiful. I looked forward to receiving my preorder of this book and was not the least bit disappointed. I am planning to keep busy all winter with these projects- sewing, knitting, soap making, printing, jewelry making, dying, weaving and crocheting. There are lots of detailed instructions and pictures showing detailed progress. I think you will be inspired to try something new!
If you are always interested in creating something with your hands, this book has some great ideas and it is lovely to look at as well asinspiring. I would go through the table of contents first--to be sure that you are interested in doing these projects. It can keep you makingthings for several months!

This book helped me tackle a task that I had been putting off for way too long. My wife & I have wills, and estate planning documents and we knew where those were, but other than that, our stuff was scattered everywhere. I tend to do most of the financial "stuff" in our house (bank accounts, insurance policies, etc...), and it is amazing how many different things we have accumulated during our marriage. I was scared that, if something happened to me, my wife wouldn't know where my life insurance policy was stored, or where the deed for our house was located etc...I got this book, and went to Staples and got the binder etc... I will say that this author also sells a binder / sheet protector combo deal. That probably would have been less expensive that my route.Once I started working the book, it is very easy to follow. It is broken down into sections. The premise being that you take your three ring binder, and break it into the same sections. Each section covers one topic. You put all relevant documents into that section of your binder. Some of these, you'll need to probably create, and some are probably more important than others. One nice part about this book is how comprehensive it is. While I can't say I used every possible page, I did find myself using a lot more than I would have otherwise thought I would need.The book also has a number of forms that you can pull out, write on, and then put them in your binder if you choose. Another option it gives is to go to a website, and download the forms, type on them, print them out, and then put them in your binder. Again, some you will choose to use, others won't apply to your situation.All in all, this book served it's purpose very well. My family's "stuff" is much more organized. Now, when I get to go to see Jesus, I know that my wife can pull this one binder, and have all our family's relevant information at her fingertips. That gives me peace of mind.
When I ordered this book I thought it was something different. What I got was better than I was expecting. I needed a system to get all my accounts, records and important papers together. I was in the process of getting things ready for estate planning for my attorney and family. This book allowed me easier organization of all the necessary records in a very easy to follow method. I had this book for a long time and never reviewed it for some reason. I probably would have not reviewed it either. Recently my brother passed away. His widow and kids had so many problems getting his estate in order because his important papers and accounts were scattered everywhere. When asked for help I saw just how unorganized he was. I didn't know where to start until I remembered how I set myself up using this book. I grabbed the Get it Together book in hand and started from page one. With each chapter we were able to gather the papers necessary by following the guidelines and charts. It took awhile but eventually got his estate in order and presented it to his attorney and Executor. I can't stress enough how well this publication helped. Not every page is needed but of course each estate is different and I'm pretty sure just about every need will be addressed. I should have reviewed this book earlier and I'm sorry I didn't.This review was written without any financial considerations. Full Amazon retail was paid.
This book was responsible for me getting my financial life in order -- as well as everything else. I can't endorse it enough. It took a year to really get organized - pulling financial accounts together, collecting all the contact data/passwords, setting up a trust -- and although I wasn't in the least worried about it before, I have this nice secure feeling knowing it is done. I would have never guessed it would take that long.
A very helpful guide to organizing and building a map to papers, accounts, information, passwords, etc., that your loved ones will need to take care of your affairs when you are no longer able to do so yourself. The purchaser of the book also has access to online files that may be downloaded to help you organize each section of your planner. Every type of situation (insurance, property papers, bank accounts, brokerage accounts, wishes for funeral arrangements, and so many more) are addressed in this book. We used the downloaded files to organize our information using the computer, but the book is clear enough that you could create your own information pages if you so desire. Each chapter also includes information and links to find help or explanations of particular state laws for each situation. We found that not all the situations addressed in the book pertained to us, and it was no problem to skip those sections in the book as we compiled our personal information planners. We are relatively healthy for our ages, but getting closer every day to the time our loved ones will need this information. We feel so much more at ease because we have gone through this process while we still have clarity of thought and mind to organize our papers.
This is one of the best books I’ve seen on this subject. It is very well organized. It covers everything. I bought it knowing I was either going to be paralyzed by inactivity, or that it would be addictive for me to complete. It turned out the latter was the case. I approached it one chapter at a time, starting with the easiest ones, and actually found it enjoyable to begin to accumulate everything in my life. I thought it would take me several months to complete, however after seven weeks. It is almost done. I kiddingly told my coworkers that last week I spent planning my memorial service, even picking out the music. I had previously done something similar, and it was in a book about a quarter inch thick. I now have 2 3 ring binders which are approximately 6 inches tall. One binder is strictly for insurance policies. I highly recommend this book
Very complete information but a little daunting. There is a list for immediate usage if time does not allow for optimal information gathering.
