It is not obtuse, and for a reasonably experienced musician, it is a "fast read," as it introduces nuances and subtleties in conducting in a progressive fashion. Well worth the money, despite a few too many typographical errors. Mr. Maiello would be advised to fire the proof reader and get someone who pays as much detail to words as he must pay to musical scores.

My husband was diagnosed with congestive heart failure last fall and put on a low sodium diet. I have followed low fat, low carb, low calorie diets and thought I was nutritionally aware. After spending hours reading labels in the grocery store, I was shocked and angry by the amounts of sodium being fed to us. Thankfully I had spent the summer canning a large amount of garden produce - with no salt - but since I was afraid to buy ANYTHING in the grocery store or order anything in a restaurant anymore, I envisioned a lifetime of canned veggies! I was delighted although somewhat skeptical when I received this book. The first thing my husband requested when he came home from the hospital was a taco salad. I found the Mexican Seasoning and Taco Salad recipes and tried them - absolutely awesome. I am (hopefully was) a saltaholic and did not miss it at all. Have made numerous recipes from the book and although I have found one or two not to my taste - 95% are incredible. Thank you Thank you Thank you. This book lives on my kitchen counter - never in 3 months has it been put away and I recommend it to everyone I know.
I bought this for my 88 year old g-ma. She had to drastically cut back on her sodium intake. She didnt know where to start. In comes this book, delivered to her front door! I need to keep my sodium intake low due to an inner ear condition. I ordered seven low sodium cookbooks, and this is the one my wife latched on to as the best of the bunch. It has great substitutes for high-sodium items like soy sauce, and is a great reference - even though it is a bit dated. As an example, a low-sodium soy sauce was mentioned along with a source; unfortunately the soy sauce is no longer available and neither is the store that carried it. None the less, it told me there were soy sauces out there that are truly low in sodium and with the aid of a search engine I was able to track some down.

I now make his chili powder, Mexican seasonings, rib/meat rub, mustard and mayonnaise - and it is a very simple, quick process. Wonderful 'normal' recipes - meat loaf, a gourmet hamburger, etc. Chapters divided by meat type and also by ethnic types (Mexican, Asian, etc). I bought my dad's doctor a copy of this book so he could recommend it to his patients, it's that good. This copy was purchased for my butcher's wife who just had a baby and discovered she had an enlarged heart. The book enables anyone to eat good tasting food and still maintain a low sodium diet. Wonderful!!!
This is a great cookbook. I am an avid cook. My husband's low salt diet seemed like it would be a low taste one - but amazingly using Dick L's recipes has meant we have good food. I haven't even gotten the salt shaker out to flavor up my portions. There are plenty of comfort foods that taste great. The low salt bread machine recipes came out really well - which was a surprise to me since I had always thought salt was a necessity for proper bread. Every recipe I've prepared so far has been excellent. He has included little tricks and ingredients that make you not miss the salt.If you are newly diagnosed with any kind of illness that necessitates a low salt diet - you need this cookbook. He includes complete nutrition information for every recipe (including sodium and potassium).
I own a few low-sodium cookbooks, and this is the one I use most often. It is full of recipes that are easy to make, and that are actually useful. One of my favorites is Sesame Chicken. I make that about once a week. It also has a small collection of low-sodium bread machine recipes that I use often. My only criticism is that there seem to be a lot of mistakes in the recipes. For example, one bread machine recipe calls for two tablespoons of yeast, which is far too much. I'm sure it is supposed to say two teaspoons. Also, in some instances, the author's website ([...]) will include a recipe that is in the book, but the amounts of the ingredients differ, often confusing teaspoons and tablespoons. There have been two instances when I've emailed the author to verify the ingredients in a recipe. On one occasion, he replied to tell me there was an error. The other time he did not reply. All in all, I'd say this is a must-have cookbook in the low salt category. Just watch for any ingredients that seem suspicious.
Without question, this is the best low sodium book on the market, and I think I have them all. I had to change my diet to very low sodium, and this book helped me to still enjoy my food. The bread recipes are the best, and they are simple enough that even a inexperienced baker can make them, though I recommend to bake the bread in the oven vs. the bread machine (if you have one). Most recipes are close to regular homemade food, and most of the ingredients are available in local stores. This cookbook helped me to "learn" the low sodium way well enough that I can now experiment with his and my recipes to add variety. Thank you Dick Logue.

I got hooked on these calendars a couple of years ago and never miss buying one for myself and for my Dad. I love having a cat cartoon to read each day. Gets my day started off with a smile and often a good laugh. My Dad has a cat so he enjoys his calendar - I send it to him for Christmas.
This is the second year I will have one of these calendars. Got one last year as a gift and it really has been a gift. Always a little humor with a trivia fact or puzzle on t he back of each day. If you are a cat person (and we are), you will thoroughly enjoy this calendar.
Each year I gift my best friend with at least one cat item for Christmas. Last year, I got her a cat calendar and she had mentioned that she was disappointed that the year of cats was over. I promptly ordered this calendar, hoping it would be as good as the calendar from 2018. I was not disappointed! My friend was excited and laughing already at the cartoons on the box. I am so glad that with this product I could again give her the cat a day for a year experience :)

Like most books of this type--essentially "inspirational" quotes and explications of the same--there's going to be hits and misses. How much this book appeals will depend on how often you connect to the chosen quotes. (I, for one, was never much of a video game player so reference to Final Fantasy and the like mean nothing to me.) Fortunately, there's enough of a cross-section of popular movies, books, TV, comic books, science/computer nerdspeak, and stand-up comedy that the more obscure references go down much easier.Of course, those more obscure references are probably some measure of how much of a geek a reader actually is. I was not too surprised that I recognized that vast majority of the quotes here. I was more surprised at how often I was pleased to find quotes I knew really well, even some obscure ones. You expect quotes from Orwell, Dune, LOTR, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, etc., but Meg Murry's quote from A Wrinkle in Time ("Like and equal are not the same thing at all.") has been rattling around in my brain ever since I read the book in grade school and I was especially pleased to find it here. It was also nice for someone who's been cheerleading for Doctor Who for 30+ years to find him quoted a few times, along with a brief analysis on why his popularity is finally surging.Ultimately this is a fun little volume whether you read it straight through or dip into it from time to time. There's plenty of "geek wisdom" in the quotes themselves as well as the brief paragraphs that accompany them. And don't forget to check out the footnotes, which are often the best part of each entry. Perfect for the geek in all of us.
This is a collection of "aphorisms" from iconic parts of nerd culture (Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc.) with some "wise" explanation added by the editor to help make some kind of cohesive nerd philosophy. I bought it for a discussion on American geek culture, and I found that while it was a pleasant and funny diversion, it isn't really a collection of particularly substantive insight.It's a fun read, and you'll enjoy it, but I don't think "wisdom" really fits the book here. This is more of an opportunity to laugh and maybe see a new angle on some old favorite movie moments. I wasn't too crazy about it, but it killed some time and you might enjoy it.
Considering what it means to grow up as a nerd, this book rings true in every word and piece of knowledge it brings. It conveys messages that non-geeks might pass off as another meme to be repeated ad-nauseum and reveals the hidden means behind it, sometimes revealing a way of looking at the words that you didn't think of before.And probably best of all, the book has absolutely none of the prejudices that one might expect. It talks about what it means to be a geek girl with stunning accuracy, has a range of quotes from all different types of geekdom, and tells us that no matter who we are, geek or jock, we all face the same issues and problems and deal with them in similar ways.As it is the messages might not strike a chord with everyone who reads it, but for the ones it does reach it reaches with clarity. It's something that people should read just to see what it is they take away from it.
If you ever get confused at all your friends "inside jokes/movie/TV/character references" then this is the book for you. Also if you are the friend confusing everyone else this book will make you laugh out loud to yourself. I highly recommend it for light reading and entertainment on a cloudy day. Or just before any kind of "Nerd" party :)
Bought this for my brother who is autistic. He loves it! It's full of movie quotes and pop culture references that are just fantastic! A lot of it is just an explanation for a lot of the quotes I hear around conventions and online. Really, if you have a fan of TV tropes, this is a fantastic gift for them! As well as trivia lovers.
Gave as a holiday gift. The book is great for anyone who is a true lover of movies and books from the genre. Had enteries for any you could think of!
I have mixed feelings about this book. Some serious time was spent on parts of it, and some of the maxim/chapters make truly excellent points. And there are some really useful or meaningful ideas. BUT THEN their are other chapters. There are several incorrectly attributed quotes. Several inaccuracies. And lots of personal opinions on how to interpret each chosen meme or quotation. While everyone is welcome to interpret things as their paradigm suggests, remember the claw, a real geek will remember that a bit of research is helpful. As someone who inhales science fiction and writes professionally; and who is also married into a family that knew Carl Sagan (babysat his kids) and Rod Serling (were his neighbors) personally, I can note at least two major errors in this book. Serling definitely was not the reason The Twilight Zone was so seminal for example...unless you want to credit him with herding cats like Harry Harrison, Damon Knight, Richard Matheson, and Harlan Ellison (spelling?), of course. And Sagan was far more immensely human than implied. Other items seem to be randomly chosen as filler and lack logic much less profundity. So giving this three stars here. Feel free to read this for the good bits but maybe do a bit of research on your own.
Geek Wisdom is a super neat book filled with all kinds of "nerdy" information. The information ranges from movies to TV shows to Video Games and even toys and memorabilia. Awesome grab for any nerd.
