This book is an excellent introduction to Mary Godwin Shelley and the rest of her haunted circle. The authors have done excellent research, and present a nicely readable account of five intertwined lives--mostly Mary, Shelley, and Byron, with slightly less attention given to understanding Polidori (whose short life limits exploration) and Claire. My only hesitations to give this 5 stars, instead of the 4 I settled on, are twofold, and may not bother anyone else. First is that the authors often state with complete confidence assumptions that scholars should qualify, with statements like "There can be no doubt that Mary felt hurt" (actually unless a letter or journal shows she felt hurt, there can be doubt) or "Mary was pointedly left out of this meeting" (again, without evidence, how do we know she wasn't just as glad for some quiet time, free from momentary drama?) My other concern was the dark worldview that accompanied some of these assumptions -- Byron laughs when Polidori wrenches his foot landing an awkward jump, so that must be taunting (I agree that Byron generally comes across as a jerk, but how many men in their 20's *wouldn't* laugh when a companion lands an awkward jump?) The hell-like atmosphere of Mary's childhood was painted so starkly that it surprised me to read, in a different biography, of the idyllic home she had until she was ten, meaning that (deducting the 2 years she spent in Scotland) she lived in the hell-like home on Skinner Street four years before running away with Shelley.Again -- this is an above-average book, and worth reading! These two issues--the certainty and the cynicism--were little more than a minor annoyance. I came away from this work knowing far more about Mary and Percy Shelley and about Byron and even Claire and Polidori than I had, and so will you.
I was a little worried when I bought this book, which had been recommended by a friend, that the writers might delve into the more salacious aspects of these writers/poets...and there was a good lot of room for that with Byron being a factor, but it was very factually presented. It's fascinating to see the buildup to the narrative of Frankenstein. The authors did an excellent job of weaving together the history to show how Mary's creation evolved. Her parents and her relationship with them. Her many losses of children. Her relationship with others. They did a really thorough platform for the influence of her life in Frankenstein.I'm not a scholar so I can't speak to its historical authenticity, but I was convinced by this...and I'd love to see similar books that delve into the "why" and "how" great classic literature came to be.While I highlighted a ton of this book, I thought this was one of the more interesting quotes:Victor Frankenstein realizes that the creature is his doppelgänger--an insight that seems to have extended to readers and audiences, for today the name "Frankenstein" is popularly applied not only to the creator, but to the monster, who is never named in the book.
It's axiomatic that genius is often characterized by questionable social skills and/or behavior, and it would appear to hold true in the case of Mary Shelley's circle of family and friends. The Hooblers present unflinching portraits of Mary, her husband Percy, father William Godwin and friend, Lord Byron among others. Mary receives the kindest treatment next to her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft (Author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman) Both Marys suffer at the hands of the men in their lives, and Mary the younger spends a good deal of time trying to make some sense of that suffering. But the men... they are true pieces of work. They are all selfish, self-centered, arrogant and cruel even in their affections. They seem to have little use for the women in their lives, less for the children they father promiscuously. They live for their "art" and the pleasures it buys them. And in spite of that art, they are not particularly attractive when viewed through this lens. Of the three most prominent women in the book, Mary's stepsister, Claire Clairmont, is the least talented and the most unpalatable thanks mostly to her single-minded pursuit of Lord Byron and her possible romantic involvement with her sister's husband, Percy Shelley.I picked up the book originally because I have long been fascinated by the events of that "haunted summer" of 1816 when Byron challenged his friends to write a ghost story. The Hooblers present those events as a kind of centerpiece to the larger story of Mary Shelley, beginning with a short but careful examination of her mother's life with an eye to how it affected Mary's life and writing. One is tempted to wonder how Wollstonecraft might have viewed her daughter's elopement with Percy Shelley, and her writing career. As it is her death, not even a fortnight after the birth of her younger daughter, was the first of many losses that informed Mary Shelley's work. And in less than a quarter century, the younger Mary would lose three children, a half-sister, her husband and the love -- such as it was -- of her own father because of her relationship with Shelley. She would be haunted by the suicide of Shelley's first wife, Harriet, and her husband's chronic infidelities, possibly even with Claire. It's no wonder that she produced one of the most memorable horror novels ever penned.

Yes, I got out the tape measure and the text height is just shy of one and a half millimeters. Couldn't read it even with my glasses on. This review is not for the book itself, just the printing of it as I am unable to read it and have no idea if the book is good. I received it today, saw the font and immediately went into Amazon and got a refund. That was easy, they were cool about it. I just ordered the large print edition, so we will see what that looks like in a few days when it comes. Just wanted to let everybody who needs more than 1.5 millimeter size text know the deal.Just FYI, the reviews for both the large print and that tiny one are the same. So if you are looking at the one with his picture on the front, that is the tiny print one and if you click on reviews you will see this. But if you are looking at a blue book with a white dove on it that says large print edition and click on reviews you will also be brought to these same reviews and be confused when you see people saying that the text is too small to read when you are looking up reviews on a large print edition.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone coming from a Christian (Protestant) community or organization as I have who never was able to fully grasp from church preachings what it is the Holy Spirit is or can do for you. It's easy to miss the importance of seeking the Holy Spirit in prayer just from hearing it talked about over the pulpit. This book teaches me more than any sermon ever has on this topic.It encouraged me to pray more, but not only to pray, but to pray with more understanding of why I'm praying and what I should be praying for.While this is a pretty easy to understand read, I suggest taking it one or two chapters at a time and reflect on what you've read. Read any scriptures that are referred to so you can get a clearer picture of what is being discussed. I personally have been enlightened so much by this book. A lot of my questions were answered about the works of the Spirit within us. I'd read scripture and understand what was being said, but I rarely would connect the dots in the Bible concerning the Holy Spirit. I thank the Lord for the understanding that I have received from this book.

If you need one - get THIS one!!Any Ephemeris can get the job done on one level - but Astrolabe's, has a few extras, simply because of the way in which Hand approaches the topic: accurate, even-handed, positive-minded, charge-neutral, and extremely well-informed -- on this topic and many others (including the science informing astronomy). It is published in both noon and midnight versions, btw, so pay attention if it is important to you WHICH you purchase -- THIS one is midnight.Either would be fine for my level of usage - yours, too, if you're relatively new to the subject, unless you're working with a teacher who has a preference (s/he may want everyone in a class to have the SAME, so ask before you buy anything).Regardless of noon or midnight, for my money, anything Hand writes about or publishes is my FIRST choice on the topic (and I'm not alone in that thought, btw). So that includes this particular Ephemeris.FIRST, you get Hand's preface - that in itself is practically worth the price of the book. I learn something new every time I read anything written by this man.He begins by detailing the changes/additions in this version of the World Ephemeris for the [first half of the] 21st century: 1/1/2001 - 12/31/2050 -- containing considerably more info than the World Ephemeris for the 20th Century: * Moon both 00:00 E.T. and 12:00 E.T. * geocentric positions of (and daily declinations for) the 4 major asteroids and Chiron in addition to the "normal" planetary bodies, * Void-of-Course Moon data each month (with last aspect of the Moon in each sign plus time of entry into the next)- to name a few.You may not need that much detail right NOW, but you may want it later - and few astrologers would want more than one Ephemeris covering the same time period.The preface goes on to explain how to read this particular Ephemeris (*single* page per month, btw), before going into the differences between a lot of different ways of measuring time: Mean Solar Time, Universal Time, Greenwich Mean Time, Sidereal Time and Ephemeris Time - and how to use the Delta T Correction, for those who require extreme precision in chart casting (for inner planetary/Jupiter returns, for example).Now that science can measure more precisely, it is clear that the there are variations in the Earth's rotational speed (and that the net effect is that it has been slowing down), so that there are 1 or 2 "leap seconds" added each year - thus the need for Delta T. Corrections in some applications.Hand explains how the computations in this Ephemeris were derived, and includes a short section comparing this Ephemeris with possible slight differences in calculations in other EphemeridesHe concludes with a section entitled "The Limits of Ephemeris Accuracy" (anything where NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and discrepancies with Galileo's sighting of Neptune are in the same paragraph is worth reading, yes?)By the way, computations were done by computer, with pages photographed directly from computer output, so there is no chance of typos affecting the accuracy of the info. The first ephemeris where we can read that even the most accurate table might show us a very good approximation of the actual position of a planet/the moon. With that said, it is very clear and I use it regularly.
I enjoy Robert Hand books....gotta get em all! Waiting for more books on order. It is wise to have several ephemerides...enjoying watching my collection grow!

I enjoyed reading the Apocryphal Gospels: The History of the New Testament Apocrypha Not Included in the Bible. The e-book contains a list of all known New Testament Apocrypha at the back of the book before the references. The book also contained a number of excerpts from various New Testament Apocrypha. The author provided an explanation of why the various Apocrypha were not selected to become part of the New Testament. I found it interesting that information was taken from some of the Apocrypha and used in the pictorial art of the Middle Ages. For example, artwork, showing that Jesus was born in a cave comes from the Apocrypha. This book has lots of nuggets such as that. I liked the book and would recommend that anyone interested in an overview of the Apocrypha should read this book.
In addition to a list of the books considered apocryphal, this also goes over some of the most controversial, explaining how they were found, whether they were mentioned by past historians and Church fathers, and what they say about Jesus and others. Even if you're not religious and just interested in the history of the Bible or Christianity, you'll enjoy this book.
Good but not great. Bart Ehrman's works on same subject are better. This is an important study however & brings to people something they may never have realized before. Fundamentalists, like my grandmother who believed the bible was literally written by the finger of God & no other writings of a sacred or religious nature were ever done or could be done, this would have been an informative book (though she would have probably never read it but rather have burned it). It is best though that we have an expanded knowledge of various beliefs even if they vary from ours. I do not believe most of these books are scriptural but it is still good to know all the beliefs & arguments. It is better to be broad in our knowledge. We may disagree on points but "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" & God has more " light & truth to break forth from His word. RAG
I was surprised to know that most of the so-called "gospels" are historically irrelevant to know what happened in Jesus life, and that the most serious candidates to reveal something new about him were only "recently" discovered — this is, in the last century. This is a great book, more focused on how these lost gospels were found and the scholarly reaction, rather than describing their contents. The most interesting passages are included. The history of the findings itself is fascinating. One of the gospels was found in an ancient trash heap in Egypt. Kuddos for the great chapter about the Gospel of Thomas.
Easy reading on a very interesting subject. Covers a lot of ground on something that is fascinating to me. I learned about new things here. Very glad I bought this one.
This was interesting in going over the different Gospels texts that are currently out there, and what there general contents are.
A fascinating “deep dive†into not only the “standard†apocrypha but also many many other books from that time that give us a glimpse into the early Christian culture. Great read!

Beware of the test bank for this book. Many of the questions come from different chapters. Test questions are not covered in the chapter and many questions concerning drugs that are referenced no where. This is a well written book with a lot of great information. Too bad the test bank questions seem to come from a different edition. I can't wait to set this book on fire.
I bought this book for Level 2 nursing classes that have not started yet. It has been a great help with Level 1 as well. It breaks everything down for you. It has been great for working on my drug cards as well. Nursing students can not go wrong buying this book even for level one meds. I am very happy I decided to buy while still in level 1.
Not bad for a pharmacology book. Of course, how interesting is Pharm really going to be? But in general it is easy to read and understand and breaks things down pretty well. I would have given it 5 stars, but I just don't like pharmacology. But I have to say that the seller got it to me quickly in pristine condition.
I am using this product for my LPN program. I am please that the book was packaged so nicely with a receipt and instructions on how to return the item. I also did not aspect that there will be a atlas to the medication instructions in it. Thank you so much to the seller...

Every time David McCullough puts his fingers to the typewriter that he uses to write with, he seems to transform our understanding of the topic he is studying. Whether it was President Harry Truman or for me Mornings on Horseback, I have walked away from his books with an enlightened feel for the topic that I have only been able to achieve with very few authors. James Michener is one who comes to mind immediately.With this book, The Greater Journey, the author has now thoroughly engaged the reader with a topic seldom written about but very deserving of study. It is only natural that we as Americans feel we live in a self centered world; after all we have 2 vast oceans that have protected our shores from invasion for several centuries, and probably will for several more. It simply does not occur to us that since our beginnings, many Americans have chosen to spend considerable time abroad, and in some cases decades of their lives.During the 1800's and specifically from 1830 until 1900, there was a wave of intellectual migration that headed not west to America, but east to Paris, France from America. Keep in mind that we now sit in a country that is preeminent in the world, financially, intellectually, and probably culturally as well. Back then, we were just forming as a nation. The Indian wars were still in process, and the Civil War would also take place, which became the second re-creation of the United States. McCullough is totally aware of this comparison and makes wise use of it throughout this 456 page book composed of 14 distinct chapters separated into 3 parts, followed by a wonderful epilogue, and a very useful bibliography. The author understands history, and is always mindful of the relative positions of different nations. During this period we were not yet the top dog that we were to become after World War I. Europe still controlled the world's greatest universities and they were already centuries old.If you are going to read this book in a physical format as opposed to the Kindle digital version, you are in for a treat because the paper chosen is exquisite, and the font selection is superb. If you are an older reader as I am, you will appreciate the time that was taken to design the book appropriately for readers that still relish a physically well made book, and that's what we have here.This is the story of a 70 year period in the history of Paris, and the scores of Americans who occupied it, lived there, and helped participate in the transformation of what is called the city of light. It is also the story of scores of for want of a better word can be called expatriate Americans, although many of them did return to their native United States at different times.McCullough is one of the few authors who truly captures the essence of an environment and then proceeds to envelop it with a reality that absorbs and perhaps even demands our attention as readers. His description of the relationship between James Fennimore Cooper and Samuel F.B. Morse and their joy in living in this magnificent city and the effects it had on their work will remain in the reader's soul for many years after the book is put back on the shelf. When Morse painted his masterpiece, it was done in Paris, and perhaps after reading this book, one realizes it could only have been done in Paris.The city of lights already had vast boulevards, and extraordinary parks decades before the United States designed them. Indeed, New York City's Central Park which would be created later in the century would take much from Paris, and other European cities. The Americans who would go to Paris and spend years there would recall later after returning to the United States the joy of the parks, the energy of the city itself and the sheer unequalled cultural delights that embodied Paris. Visually we can still see much of this in the work of the Impressionist School of painting.I found the author's handling of Mary Cassatt, who was a Philadelphia born daughter of American socialites who went on to be an illustrious painter as a principal part of the Impressionist school, to be particularly well done. Her relationship to Edgar Degas the renowned painter of the ballet and horses, as well as landscaping is thoroughly chronicled in the book. McCullough's ability to weave life into life, with Paris as the focal point constantly holding the book together in such a way that the reader feels compelled to continue to read, not pausing to eat is what in the end keeps the author at the pinnacle of his profession today.It is obvious that this book was a labor of love for the author. It comes shining through with the admiration that McCullough holds for both Oliver Wendell Homes the American medical student in Paris, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, a name we all recognize. He even takes the time to take us through the time that Mark Twain spent in this wonderful city.Not only was Paris transformed by the Americans that occupied it during this century, but Paris itself went through extraordinary changes and development. Kings re-invented the city several times during this century. Vast numbers of poor were displaced and sent to the country. It was invaded during this period as well. Later vast tree lined streets and boulevards would be created that became the envy of Europe. The Louvre would be increased in size enormously in an attempt to make it the most important museum on the entire continent, and France would succeed in this effort.McCullough intertwines the story of Paris, its growth, its impact on the Americans and what the Americans brought back to America as a result, into a book in such an imaginative way that the reader will find himself revisiting this book from time to time. In the end the book is riveting, and this is a phrase I find myself continuing to use every time I pick up a book written by this author.Many lives are captured in this masterpiece. They include George Healy the portrait painter, Nathaniel Hawthorne whose writings still continue to occupy many a college freshman's late nights, and future American Senator Charles Sumner who would have his views on slavery refined while living in Paris. Indeed he became an abolitionist as a result of his Parisian experience.CONCLUSION:Prior to reading The Greater Journey, I believed I had a good understanding of 19th century Paris. Having studied the art of that period, going to the Louvre, and sitting in on lectures dealing with Paris in the 1800's, I looked forward to seeing what this author could add to the story. I did not expect what I got, which was to have him blow away my understanding and replace it with something that came alive and stood on many different legs of understanding, but isn't that what great writing can do. It can simply make things come alive again. You feel as though you are there, and McCullough puts us right there in the thick of the action.Although it is not the whole story, if you have any interest at all in understanding the transformative art period that was the Impressionist movement it is vividly captured here in the lives of Augustus Saint-Gaudens with John Singer Sargent, and Mary Cassatt. David McCullough is already an acclaimed author with two Pulitzers and two national Book Awards, and it looks like with this book, he's got another Pulitzer coming down the pike. This book was a delightful and informative narrative of many prominent Americans who traveled to Paris from the early 1830's to the end of the 19th century. Who knew that before he invented the telegraph, Samuel Morse was an exceptional painter. His "Gallery of the Louvre"was a well celebrated painting. He also had a friendship with the writer James Fenimore Cooper and included him in the aforementioned painting. Young medical students including Oliver Wendell Holmes and Elizabeth Blackwell (first American female doctor) came to France to enhance their skills as France was at the cutting edge of medical knowledge during this period. Who was Elihu Washburne? You will find out about this remarkable American after reading The Greater Journey. Other notable individuals who are discussed in this book include artists John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassat, George Healy and the remarkable sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. You will learn about the internal turmoil that continued in France after the Revolution of 1789 including the reign of Louis Napoleon and his major blunder of going to war with Germany. There is so much to like about this book. This is the seventh book written by Mr. McCullough that I have read and it may be the most enjoyable.
A historical junket that chronicles a series of events and significant Americans who spent time in Paris to hone their cultural and/or artistic skills. It traverses through late the early years of eighteenth century through the early years of the twentieth century. In typical McCullough fashion, this book is well researched and full of information that surrounds interesting people. I learned a great deal about the American growth of diplomacy with France, the wars, the alliances, and the enmity between the countries. I also learned a great deal about Americans who studied and practiced medicine, painting, sculpture, music, and political diplomacy in Paris. This city is a modern center of culture, and it is fitting that much of the American culture has been largely influenced by France, and more particularly, Paris. As well done as the book is, I struggled through the myriad pages of detail, historical facts, stories, persons and famous events that were not connected in story form, but rather an encyclopedic fashion. I started and stopped this book at least 4 times while reading it in order to read something that was more pleasurable reading. I read largely for pleasure but have great interest in history and the perspectives that history brings to my personal core knowledge. This was great for increasing core knowledge, but dull for pleasure reading value.
