In THE COUNTRY WIFE, Horner allows society to believe he is impotent, and as such husbands entrust him with their wives. But Horner is anything but impotent, and before long he is bedding a host of bored, foolish, and incredibly horny women--including the young, silly Margery, an ignorant country girl recently wed to an elderly man.THE COUNTRY WIFE is particularly famous, or infamous, for the so-called "China Scene." Horner claims to have extensive knowledge of the china collected by fashionable ladies, and this provides them with an excuse to visit his rooms to discuss china. And discuss it they do indeed, so much so that the very word "china" becomes funnier with every repetition. But this is far from the only notable moment the play has to offer; from carousing housewives to hysterical husbands, THE COUNTRY WIFE is lewd, lacivious, and almost unbearably funny.Like many early Restoration plays, THE COUNTRY WIFE has been accused of being "cold," for does not really provide the viewer/reader with a sympathetic hero or heroine, nor does it punish the wrong-doers at the end, a fact which later censors found particularly outrageous. I ordered this thinking that there would be a number of lovely colored photos, much like the ones I have had in the past.....perhaps 26 or so photos. Instead, there are only 12 photos, not glossy but on matte paper. After each photo of a house and it's floor plan, the folloowing 8 pages are a calendar for the month (2 pages) and then the remaining pages are the weeks in that month broken down to 6 or 7 days on a page....if you are looking for an engagement calendar book with lots of photos of FLW buildings (one every other page or more), this is seriously disappointing and not for you.
the Galison Engagement calendar format is unusable. You can't see the photos on the week, and you can only see one week spread out across two pages. More than once I missed an upcoming event the next week, more than once I flipped to the wrong week, can't find where the month starts for the inserted pages (who actually reads the pages between the dates?). They start on Jan 1 and end on Dec 31, no overlap so for those weeks you're carrying two calendars. Its just awful. For 2019 I bought a Pomegranate engagement calendar- they used to make the Frank Lloyd Wright calendars. At last I have a calendar I can use. It's not Frank Lloyd Wright but it's lovely and I wont miss events!
A gift for someone who loves FLW. Building plans and descriptions make it worth hanging onto even after the year has ended. The recipient of it was very happy with it! Shipping went out very quickly and arrived sooner than expected, which I was excellent.

this is a very different coloring book its cute but the faces have a very different and unique look about them I think the whole book is really cute. I love the girls in them and I plan on using them in my art journal as bookmarks or little bits in the background I really love that this is very different from any other coloring book I have super cute and I am so glad I bought it. I have so many coloring books I will never finish them.
This is a classic case of "you can't judge the book by the cover." When I first received this book, I was super disappointed thinking that the cover reflected the content. To my surprise and delight, the images in the book were all SO MUCH BETTER!I am really enjoying this book - it reminds me of the glamorous paper dolls I loved as a kid. The image I've attached reminds me of Rainbow Bright if she grew up with her adoring fan base. I definitely recommend this book and appreciate that I had the opportunity to review this book as part of the Blue Star Coloring book monthly review program.

Normally clothing stresses me out, but this coloring book does the opposite. I enjoyed coloring so much that I ended up sharing this book with my friend's 13 year old daughter. She also loves the different pictures of dresses and cute outfits. Each picture is an opportunity to be creative.I got this book for free in return for my review. Best deal I ever made! Very interesting book. Wish it had more scenes with models doing something other then pages of just models. Also wish it was perforated.
I liked this much more than I expected to, to be honest. Not really a fashion-conscious person in real life, but these designs are cute and fun. Decent quaility paper (suitable for markers), single-sided and non-perforated pages.

This is a great book on the history of women's collegiate athletics and Title IX. As a high school girls' basketball coach, I picked up this book out of curiosity. I figured that since the title captured both triumph and tragedy, it might give an unbiased look into Title IX. I think the author accomplishes that quite well. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I have already referenced back to it multiple times.
Very helpful in my research.

This book is adorable in every way. The art is gorgeous and imaginative, and oh, so colorful. The story, too, is wonderfully written. For those of us who are very early into learning Japanese, the romanji was a wonderful addition, though when trying to read with the Japanese characters alone, it can be a little distracting. I must read this book several times a day to my daughters, and I love it so much I tend to read it on my own for Japanese practice. Anyone interested in learning Japanese, or reading in Japanese, or bilingual books in general should check out this book.

What better way to introduce the languages of Japanese to English...or English to Japanese? Illustrations are simply delightful! Not only does this book have an adorable style and good message; this book is perfect for absolute beginners. There is no kanji, minimal katakana, almost all hiragana, and there’s the romaji spelling coupled with the English translation. This book can be taught to kids of either direction, beginners of English or Japanese.I recommend this kid’s book for people looking to get started with language learning.
This book was super cute! I'm studying Japanese and Japanese picture books are helpful when it comes to learning new vocabulary and sentence structures. I would like to see more of these, as well as some a bit more advanced with basic Kanji with furigana.
I am using children's books, such as these, to help me with my Japanese language studies. What I like is that I have the Romanizations with kana characters, and the English equivalent.

STEVEN BRILL has written for The New Yorker, Time, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, New York, and Fortune. He founded and ran Court TV, The American Lawyer magazine, ten regional legal newspapers, and Brill's Content magazine. Brill was the author of Time's March 4, 2013, special report "Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us," for which he won the 2014 National Magazine Award for Public Interest, and the 2015 bestseller America's Bitter Pill. He has regularly appeared as an expert analyst on NBC, CBS, and CNN. He teaches journalism at Yale, where he founded the Yale Journalism Initiative to enable talented young people to become journalists. In 2018, he cofounded NewsGuard, which rates the legitimacy of online news sites. He lives in New York City.

Brill’s is one of a gazillion recent books that addresses the question, what happened to America? That it’s broken, we all know, even if we don’t always admit it to ourselves.This book, however, really is different. Brill is one of the few authors who has the legal and financial expertise to really get it right. And that he does. The problem is not social, political, racial, or patriarchal (although the latter two are real problems that must be addressed). The problem is economic. In short, the new American aristocracy are the wealthy who continue to elevate themselves above the rest of society financially and who have successfully dug moats around themselves and their children to protect their elite status.It is, in my own words, the commercialization of America. The wealthy in America have successfully constructed a false meritocracy where ‘merit without means’ has grown increasingly difficult. Class mobility, as a result, has declined and fewer and fewer of our youth can expect to live better than their parents.It’s the universal law of unintended consequences. We replaced the old-boy, inherited wealth aristocracy with a true meritocracy. The meritorious among us, however, used their newfound mobility to create a world where class mobility has been commercialized. The children of the already wealthy, as a result, who have access to private schools, tutors, SAT prep classes, violin lessons, and the latest technology, have a material advantage in climbing their own ladder of merit.What distinguishes Brill’s book is that he works harder than most authors on providing solutions, or at least finding and revealing people and institutions who have already made a difference (no, not Trump) and who offer a template for moving forward.Brill is informed across a wide spectrum of topics. He is, first and foremost, however, a journalist and it shows. The prose is easy to read but always backed up with plenty of data. At times, perhaps, just a tad too much. But that’s okay. He, more than most, makes it clear why we are all so disillusioned.This book will make you mad. And it should. Our politicians are dialing for dollars while Washington burns. And Brill has the connections and the writing skills to bring the heat into your living room.A very good book that no one will want to pick up a second time. But that’s okay. Sometimes we need a good whack to make sure we’re still awake.
By the time they reach the end of this excellent book, readers may wonder that anything is still working in America for anyone other than the well-educated, the well-connected, and those wealthy enough to retreat to their financial and gated enclaves. (For examples, read the real estate section of the Friday edition of the Wall Street Journal.) After cataloging the depressing and interlocking shortcomings of American society over the last 50 years, Brill is still optimistic about the future, and includes many examples of people taking personal responsibility to foster the fading common good. Those who are more pessimistic than the author will recall that it took a vestigial socialist tradition, a Great Depression, and the Second World War to move America away from earlier tailspins. More recently, the organized opposition of millions of Americans to the Vietnam war failed to end that senseless conflict. Today millions of people are shocked by the level of gun violence in our country, but cannot organize around this issue to effect real change. I applaud the efforts of Brill and the many people who are challenging the system with real alternatives, but I fear that it will take a seismic cataclysm to relieve the present persistent nightmare.
A fantastic account of every court battle, regulation, and congressional act since the 50s that's lead America to where it is today; the country with the most most wealth inequality in the developed world. Reading this, it's clear how my generation of millenials was left with nothing but the scraps of a dying nation.
In this extensively researched book, Steve Brill concludes that “the country has gone into a tailspin since the post-war era†with, among other things, increased income inequality, a deteriorating infrastructure, a high poverty rate, mediocre health care and student achievement and a dysfunctional and money corrupted Congress. He then goes into great detail to describe how this has come about and what some people are trying to do about it.One of his key findings is that meritocracy has become the new aristocracy. In other words, top students from the top law schools began to enjoy enormous incomes by working with big businesses to generate favorable legislation and regulations and devise ways to work around tax and other laws.Brill devotes several pages to what he calls the Greening of the First Amendment which has enabled businesses to spend considerable money in political campaign and requires legislators to spend substantial time raising campaign funds. He describes instances where the enormous amount spent on lobbying has prevented appropriate regulation and legislation.Brill laments that businesses that have been found to be serious law breakers are able to get by with fines that for many are just considered a cost of doing business while no action is taken against the executives who authorized or were aware of the unlawful activities.Overall, I found most of Brill’s comments to be appropriate.Brill notes organizations trying to change things for the better, including the Bipartisan Policy Center, Better Markets, Open Secrets and Peter Edelman with Georgetown’s poverty and inequality center.Brill ends with surprising optimism. “Things may get worse before they get better,†he says. But “Americans …are going to decide enough is enough.â€
Steven Brill is a brilliant man & a superb writer - I have read everything he has written. I like to get up early & read when it is nice & quiet, but I must say this book was difficult to read more than a chapter at a time because it is so depressing. It set the tone for my day as negative. Brill delineates the greed & corruption of our congress & the business world. His facts are true & that makes it all the more disheartening. And most disheartening of all is that the only hope he provides are in the last 3 pages of the book! How I wish it was not so.
