This review is a caution for buyers expecting an A4 size or larger book when in effect this edition is a small pocket size format (although it has 645pages). The small format makes detail in the photographs hard to see.The Kyoto Institute published the same book some years earlier, also called Fashion, but with a different cover picture. The earlier book is better because it is a large book 8 x 11 inches. The content of both books is identical. Another reviewer said there is additional photographs in the newer, smaller book, but that is not true.My advice, buy the previous, larger edition of this book instead.
I'm trying to cut down on buying books (sorry, dear Amazon) and picked this up at the public library. Within 15 pages I knew I had to own it for the rest of my life. The color photos are revelatory, the scholarly details fascinating. I love the format: small and thick. Every once in a while, there is some reverse-out type (like white letters on black background) that is annoying, but then one encounters that everywhere. I don't think I've ever given five stars before. That might be because of the price. This is an incredible bargain. Highly recommended.
This book has a very high rating and it SHOULD. This book is beautiful and the garments presented are truly works of art. No other book has inspired me to buy some Indian Chintz Fabric so fast as this one. The details are up close the only problems I have with this book is that some of the pictures are from a profile view and the front and back are not shown. The other problem I had was so few items from the 50's :( (I know its not a book dedicated to the 50's but I love that era ).Even with those in mind I would not hesitate to purchase this book again at a higher price point.. I would have really REALLY liked to see some garments by the infamous Olga Nikolaevna Bulbenkova, one of the creators of those wonderful Russian court gowns sported by the Romanov (Last Imperial Dynasty) family to hold the throne.Is it worth it? Yes
This is fabulous!For the price of $10 I didn't expect much, but what an amazing book on Fashion through the ages. Wish I could go to the museum in person to see this wonderful collection, but the book, as small as it is, does a great job of showing it off. What's written is even better as it give so much information on how women's clothing has changed -- and why -- over the centuries.
I misread the title before purchase. I thought this was an overall comprehensive fashion book instead of one that focused solely on the kyoto institutions collection. After the initial dissapointment due to my negligence, I was happy with the quality of the images and content within this book. The diversity amongst cultures and time periods varied more than I thought this book would be capable of. Though the content was not expansive as the purchase I intended to make, I was impressed enough to not return this book.
A really nice resource! The photos can be kind of grainy, wish they were better quality. But this is a really cheap book for the amount of historical costume you get to gawk at, so it's still a good deal.

I am very impressed. very sturdy book, very well made. this book would be a great present for anyone who likes fashion. It's a lovely book that was a gift for a friend. Only issue is that the book itself is kinda small so some of the details (of which there are many) are lost. Wish the book was standard sized, but the content is amazing and my friend loves it!

Some of the rooms in this book are just plain yucky. There are some okay ideas for projects, but many of them are not ones I would use in a child's room. If you are looking for practical ideas on getting started, choosing a color scheme or theme, tying the room together, etc. this book isn't very helpful. You can draw from the rooms pictured, but many of them are not attractive at all. There were a couple of rooms I did really like, but no helpful information about how the look was achieved. I would not recommend this book at all only because there are so many that are fifty times better out there!
We found out she was creative and clever from her first couple books, but this one puts her in a whole new league. Scheffler is becoming the Renoir of crafts and home design: eye catching ideas that lift the spirit and bring out the kid at heart (even for us who aren't kids anymore). I'm all thumbs, but I want to grab my paints and craft supplies and get cracking. Better yet, will you come and decorate my apartment, Carol?? Please!

Gregory Crewdson is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale University School of Art, where he is the director of Graduate Studies in Photography. His work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and internationally. The retrospective Gregory Crewdson toured Europe from 2005 to 2008, and the survey In a Lonely Place traveled throughout Europe, Australia, and New Zealand in 2013. He was the subject of Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, a 2012 feature documentary directed by Ben Shapiro that focused on the making of Crewdson’s ambitious series Beneath the Roses, which took nearly ten years and a crew of more than one hundred people to produce. Crewdson’s awards include the Skowhegan Medal for Photography, National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship, and Aaron Siskind Fellowship. He is represented by Gagosian Gallery.

This is the catalog for his current show at Gagosian. An amazing work, if you like Crewdson, this is a must have book. Beautifully bound, printed in Italy. Prints are good enough for framing.

Five stars for the physical book. Beautifully printed with no mistakes. The binding is very nice.Four stars for the photographs, if one can really be critical of this work. There is no great deviation from Crewdson's past work; if you liked Beneath the Roses then you'll probably like Cathedral of the Pines.

It was apparent to me even back then that nearly all popular songs fell into categories based on basic chord progressions with variations/substitutions. But I didn't have a source that explained what these were. I understood the circle of fifths from the smidgen of music theory I got with my piano lessons, and I picked out some of the more obvious common progressions such as the I-IV-V and I-VIm-IV-V, but nowhere could I find a comprehensive description of chord progressions. When I began listening to groups like Chicago and Steely Dan that used rock/jazz chords, I figured there would never be a book that covered it all.In the late 70s Making Changes: A Practical Guide to Vernacular Harmony by Eric Salzman and Michael Sahl came approached what I was looking for. But a lot of the space in that book was devoted to scores containing examples of what they wrote about, and the book did not feel complete. Finally, I discovered the Richard Scott book one day when I was writing a song and wondering how I might classify a progression I just wrote and compare it to similar songs. A search of the Internet turned up a description of Scott's book, and upon buying the book I found it to be everything I wanted plus more. Scott's taxonomy of chord progressions represents the universe of progressions admirably in my judgment. Most of the examples he provides are immediately familiar to me, and I can "hear" the progression he writes about easily. The book also contains a nice appendix that reviews how to represent chords (Oh, so that chord is C7#5#9!), chord substitution, modulation, and transposing. I finally have the only reference book I have ever needed on chord progressions.
Beautiful book. Three improvements: chord diagrams for piano and guitar as an appendix, and greater use of the roman numeral system (I, II, iii) etc. instead of putting everything in the key of C. It would also help to emphasize how to string parts of songs together, rather than having a primary focus on just verse or chorus.Otherwise it's chock full of good ideas and is ideal for those who can't read music well. Despite my suggestions, I give it 5 stars because I've learned more from two weeks with this book than I have with 15 years of plunking on the guitar. I've also learned a little piano to boot! Just get it. Mr. Scott, you've done us a great service.
Good book, with a thoughtful analysis and nice organization. However, there are two issues that should be addressed.First, the book is too thick and heavy. If they made the font size normal, it would be 150 pages instead of 500. It’s stupid. I won’t travel with this book as a result.Second, it’s really really dated. The copyright is from 2003!
Chord progressions for songwriters is not overburdened with theory, but is clearly underpinned by a solid base. The whole book is jammed full of examples and a huge amount of work has clearly gone into gathering and categorizing songs from all genres. This has been great for me to start understanding why some songs just sound the way they do and the skeletal structure and composition heritage that they draw from.

Harmonic progression is (often) the first thing that comes in the songwriting process. If it's not the first thing and if your song is not based on a riff, you'll have to put chords somewhere in the process anyway.To me, this book has a big advantage on all others "chords progression" books : it puts each chord progression in one of the 21 kinds that are referenced. So you know all kinds of progressions, all the variations you can make and on what hits it has been used.A great thing too : the book distingues the different inversions or pedal that are used on the progressions.I am an arranger and building a interesting bass line over a progression can really refresh that classic progression that people already heard one million times.You won't "discover THE music secret" thanks to this book or write hit songs just by using one of the chords progression (and if you think that a book like this exists, I have some very bad news for you :) ) but you will have all the basic material for harmony in songwriting, at the same place. There is nothing more to look at, it's all there.I also bought this book just to give me new ideas and change my habits. Check yourself, you might always use the same progressions ... I did and this book teaches me new ones (no big discovery but even if I know these chords, I don't really use them in that order), and gives me a new approach on the harmonic analysis of the progressions I frequently use.to finish with, sorry for my poor english ...
Well-done and very insightful. Helps tremendously with exposing original songwriting ideas. Wish I had this when I was in my teens...I would have written thousands of tasteful songs. I encourage all musicians, especially those who play chordal instruments (guitar, keyboards), to write original songs. There is a lot of crap out there these days. Many of the progressions listed step outside simple diatonic progressions with excellent song examples where they were tastefully employed. It opens the ears and provides for new ways to approach writing creative chord progressions for original song material. Get it and use it.
If you play bass like I do, and study chord progressions, this is the best book I can recommend! The author has put together a compendium of chord progressions from dozens and dozens of songs from blues to rock n' roll to jazz to folk & popular music. In fact, there is 500 pages of chord progressions. Anyone who plays an instrument and knows chords will find this book invaluable. This is excellent in both content and technique. I use it together with Mel Bay's Complete Book of Chords by Dana Roth and I have really improved my understanding of music and also my playing. This is a highsierrabassplayer top choice!

This is an impressive narrative history covering a critical period in Russian history that haunts the world to this day.It provides context for Vladimir Putin's attempt to build a new (arguably evil) empire. The book has the content and context supported by the author's observations of living in Russia in those fateful years along with amazing first person interviews of key players from the decades the Soviet Union existed.All of this is brought to life through Remnick's persuasive and entertaining writing style. Consider his indictment of the Soviet Union's leaders in the Communist Party, KBG, and military who were culpable in an ideological and decades long lie, "the truth challenged their existence, their comfort and privileges. Their right to a decent office, a cut of meat, the month vacation in the Crimea - it all depended on a colossal social deception, on the forced ignorance of 280 million people."His overriding thesis is based on the deception the leaders perpetuated, "When history was no longer an instrument of the Party, the Party was doomed to failure. For history proved precisely that: the Party was rotten to the core." He compares it to Oz, "a colossal mistake, and the only way to endure it was the perfection of irony." Irony, black humour, resigned acceptance and dicey alcoholism. In proving the latter he draws on Yerofeyev's novel, Moscow Circles, which drew on real life, "His greatest relief is in the mastery of the binge. He is an artful mixologist." This mixologist is the everyman of the Soviet Union who would drink nail varnish and lavender water (or bathtub gin, hair tonic, bug spray) in a pinch just to survive the grey, monolith that was the empire.In order to maintain the totalitarian system, its leaders used the regular and secret police along with judges to maintain control. If that was threatening enough, your neighbor or own child may inform on you. All the while you spent your day waiting in line for bread and meat and years for an apartment, a phone, and a burial plot. Meanwhile, the leaders and party functionaries are labeled by Remnick as the largest and most abusive Mafia the world has ever seen. Even in far flung outposts of the Empire like Azerbaijan, these shameless officials live on vast estates. One fake Communist mucky-muck built his castle with thousands of slave labourers. The grounds eventually filled with peacocks and thoroughbred horses while the bedrooms held concubines.The Gorbachev and Yeltsin saga is well-laid out and sadly farcical. I remember watching the news of the 1991 coup attempt. It was a surreal as they come. Yet, the Soviet Union was surreal in that 280 million people lived for decades as peasant hostages. A surreal Oz run by a ruthless Mafia who had the benign approval of millions. Even the most talented dystopian novelist could not invent the Soviet Union.
This book tells the story of the struggle of Russia to reclaim it's history from the tissue of lies the Communist Party packaged and sold in place of the truth. Remnick, who was an American journalist in Moscow, brings a host of information together detailing how people, at great risk to themselves, investigated the bloody facts of the history of the USSR which the Communists wanted to paint over. The slow admissions to the Katyn Massacre, the Red Terror under Lenin and the truely brutal Purges of Stalin were forced into the open and helped to discredit the Soviet regime and hastened it's collapse. "Lenin's Tomb" is a book of many stories that are all well told. This book is sadly prophetic in it's warning of the danger of another dictator/oligarchy taking power before a democratic Russia could be established. Enter Vladimir Putin.

The interviews with key political figures, journalists and ordinary citizens also provided stories of neglect and physical abuse amid those who blatantly disregarded basic human needs and others who didn’t seem to care.Remnick’s fascinating book contained detailed historical accounts from those who witnessed the chain-of-events of Stalinism.These person to person contacts were very moving. Stalin’s brutal regime was hard and ugly. It was difficult to understand and discouraging to read comments of admiration, living under this system, rather than scores of condemnation.History enthusiasts should read this book for an in-depth knowledge of Stalinism and how it dramatized and excoriated the “soul†of its peoples and, what life was like under a despotic Communist ruler. I could not put this book down. It’s readable, interesting and tells a good story; chocked full of events from people who were “drivers†of the Communist world and of those who orchestrated its demise.An extraordinary revelation of a perverted political system perpetrated upon the innocent. "Lenin's Tomb" is without a doubt the definitive account of the internal machinations of the Communist Party that led to the coup to end Gorbachev's reign as Soviet Premier, the ensuing chaos that followed and the collapse of the Soviet Union with the coup against Gorbachev and the conditions that led to the rise of Yeltsin. Remnick's role as the USSR correspondent for the Washington Post positioned him to be the perfect eyewitness to this history and his gifts as a writer makes the story eminently accessible, something that probably would be inaccessible in the hands of less gifted historians. Almost 25 years later, this is a masterpiece and provides keen insights for the subsequent evolution of post-Soviet Russia under Yeltsin and subsequently Putin.
A major accomplishment. By luck, Remnick happened to be in Moscow just after the USSR's fall, when the massive state archives suddenly opened up and the truth about the Soviet government was laid bare, ripe for the picking. But picking through this research and calling living witnesses until they relented and agreed to talk to him had nothing to do with luck. It took work and persistence. That he is a gifted writer is lucky for his readers, and the one element that made this heart-breaking information comprehensible, not to mention bearable. More than once, the content was so devastating that I had to put the book down for a few months. I have yet to finish it, but want to. If he had the grit to write it, he deserves readers willing to absorb it.

Like I said, it would be beneficial to read for anyone in the Education Profession or anyone who may be interested in why students drop out. More statistics could have been added. Overall, this book would be great for someone who needs an introduction to the issue. I enjoyed reading “Why We Drop Out?†because it gave a story to the countless numbers and percentages of people who do drop out. It could teach empathy and allow teachers to think about students as people with real lives rather than just a brain to soak up information. I would recommend this book to a beginning teacher to know that they may be able to impact and change someone’s life by just being observant.
