I usually skip the manual except for the basics and just start exploring new products. This book pointed out a few things I would have missed. Echo is so easy to set up.

The Echo Dot is a Conveniently device for the busy multi-tasker for the home and office. It tells you that a wake-up word is needed and the Preview the Setup to find the perfect spot for maximus usage.

The booklet helped me understand my dots and echoes to a degree better than before (light ring co!ors, corrective actions, etc) but it disappointed me in thoroughness. Read through and wrote some notes in 35, 40 minutes. Expected more.

This guide was highly informative, easily understood and had everything a beginner needs to know about getting started with Amazon Echo and more. Way more info than the Amazon Echo guide that comes with the product. Learned quite a bit of new information from this guide. Mckinnon explains everything quite well.

Without this book i would never have known all the excited things that my second generation echo dot could do! Troubleshooting, tips and much more. Very informative guide with screenshots.

Review

"A classic collection of skateboarding lore and legend straight from the heart of the icons that created it." Juice Magazine "Skateboarding's formative years and milestones eroded before they were documented. Stalefish captures those stories in a way skateboarders old and new can relate to. A necessary book." Transworld Skateboarding "So, if you are a skater, or have ever been one, you need to read Stalefish. Honestly. Read it. Stalefish would also be a great read for anyone interested in the history of skateboarding, or skate culture. And really, I can't imagine a better way to represent skateboarding than with a book like this. Stalefish captures the personal and individual aspects of skateboarding perfectly. And that's really what skateboarding is. Read this book. You'll love it. Steve Cave, About.com Skateboarding Guide "This ain't no run of the mill history lesson. It's more like sitting down at a bar to hear Mike Vallely tell his story about how he didn't want to be the face of change for skating or hear how Tony Hawk had his first kiss at Del Mar or how Daewon Song thought that he sucked at one point. No boring "Skateboarding adapted from surfing..." commentaries, only the juicy details from the pros that made the scene what it is today. Highly recommended." —Turntablelab.com Sean Mortimer tackles the culture of skateboarding after taking us into the lives of Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. Stalefish covers skateboarding from the vantage point of those who were there making it a cultural phenomenon from the beginning until modern day. With historic heavyweights Stacy Peralta, Steve Alba and Lance Mountain to modern-day culture makers Daewon Song, Jamie Thomas and Chris Haslam, this isn't a book that will tell you what happened; it's a book about the people who made it happen telling you how it went down. Skateboarder/writer Sean Mortimer, who helped Rodney Mullen and Tony Hawk with their autobiographies, brings you a wonderful new book about skating. This volume is a collection of interviews on skateboarding and skate culture from a variety of people within the skateboarding subculture and industry. It's far more thorough and detail than I expected when I bought it sight-unseen. If you are at all interested in the history or culture of the sport, this volume is indespensible.

I grew up skating with and watching these guys, brings back so many memories for me that I have read it so many times...it's showing wear.

Thank you so much! My husband is an avid skateboarder and he started reading the book immediately after he got it on Christmas!

The Dogtown movies got people interested in the history of skateboarding, but Sean Mortimer's book throws a wider net to encompass some of the biggest names in skating. It's not a book about contests, sponsorships and who made up what tricks (although that is a component of the book). To me it really was a celebration of what skating meant to-, did for- and brought about in the lives of these skaters. Readers will find out how some of these guys used skating to escape unhappy family lives; how it feels to be a celebrity at 14 and then a has-been at 18; what it's like to be so obsessed with a "hobby" that nothing else matters. There are funny stories about being on the road; meeting skating idols and then beating them in competition; and a bunch of other inside info that really makes these skaters seem more real than an any X-Games interview can. It's all told in the words of the skaters with great photography. If you have any interest in skateboarding get this book.

As a skateboarder, I found this a very interesting book. I simply couldn't put it down. It largely consists of extracts of interviews with skateboarders about all aspects of skateboarding and is written in their own words. This is fortunate because Sean Mortimer is not a good writer. He ghost-wrote Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen's autobiographies and did not do a good job at all. I've seen articles written by both Hawk and Mullen in skateboard magazines over the years and in my opinion both can write better than Mortimer. Those two books are both readable - but only because the stories themselves are so compelling. The writing style is amateurish to say the least. Mortimer should have stuck to skating. Unfortunately, his poor writing does creep into Stalefish via the small introductory sections. Mercifully, these can be skipped.

While Sean's work on Rodney Mullen's biography wasn't quite what I hoped, Stalefish is an awesome, often intriguing collection of almost roadtrip tales from the legends who've made skateboarding into what it is today. There's a lot of funny stories here making you realize just how haphazard the whole skate scene was back in the 1980's and early 1990's.The layout and the production values are excellent too. Highly recommended to especially those who grew up on skateboarding back in the day.

Bought this book for English class during my first semester in college. Really provides you with a better understanding of skateboarding and its history. The book features a versatile selection of legendary skateboarders. I was fortunate enough meet Sean, and got my copy signed. Awesome author and awesome book!

This was given as a gift to my oldest son who was a sk8er. he loved the book

The book arrived in a timely fashion and in excellent condition. It is an interesting account of a sad chapter in British and Middle Eastern history that explains some of the problems of present day Yemen.

This book is bit difficult to find so I was thrilled that Amazon could source it. I bought as a gift for my Father, who reports it is a fascinating read. It is a relevant book to our family as one of the men featured on the cover is my Uncle.

Very detailed and apparently historically accurate.

As British influence and colonial power throughout the Middle East diminished in the 1960s, the strategic military base of Aden soon became a battle ground at the centre of a bloody war that no side could possibly win outright.Jonathan Walker is a member of the British Commission for Military History and an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Birmingham’s Centre for First World War Studies who has a number of acclaimed works to his credit. He is, therefore, well qualified to write a book about Britain’s last colonial conflict and, all things considered, appears to have produced a most thorough job of work.Commencing with an all-important explanation of the Kingdom of Sheba, the author steers the reader quite expertly through the cause, condition and eventual outcome of the conflict in a book containing almost 300 pages of narrative plus those equally important explanations and further detail found in the appendices at the end.Personally, I was just as pleased to find a full and frank account of that well known, though often misunderstood and misquoted, contribution made by Lt. Colonel Colin Mitchell and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders as I was to discover some of the horrific injuries and assassinations visited upon British civilian staff and their families. The text is supported with a carefully chosen and relevant selection of photographs found together in the middle of the book and, altogether, this product should please most readers for its factual accuracy and clarity of delivery.NMBritish army major (retired)

Great book for anyone with basic to no knowledge of ID. Very clear and in depth too.

As promised by seller, also great content for those interested in the field.

Came in great condition.

Great content but this book itself had stains and writing throughout.

This is my go-to manual for ID. I find it accessible and thorough in its coverage of the most essential ID concepts. I have read the previous edition, too (see my pic!). Instructional design is a dry but important topic. It's the difference between a course that bores you to tears or changes your life. The authors have treated it well here.

Very reasonably priced handbook of the essentials for beginners. Some of the other resources online are overwhelming for my students, and this breaks it down in digestible chunks with easy to understand language. Not sure why the other individual who reviewed had to take out anger of having to pay for a book out on the authors. Granted, everything may be online, but the authors took the time to bring it together in a coherent form. eLearning is ever changing, but the concepts will apply to both instructional design and eLearning in the future.

Book was a JOKEEEEETo those who need it for University of Houston most of the content is available onlineOnly get this book if you need it for detailed quizIf not waste of your money. In my actual class we barely used this book so all I needed was the ADDIE modeland other websites have this information everywhere with more details...so yea it's a pass!

The most boring textbook I've ever been forced to read. 20 pages could be completely summarized by a paragraph and the rest is just blubbering nonsense. I hate this book.

Consider the contrast in hurricanerecoveries between Florida, where an electricity system strengthened bysound investments was quickly restored, and Puerto Rico, whose neglected equipment was practically wiped from the island.A mountain of evidence for this view is contained in "Inconvenient Facts: The science that Al Gore doesn't want you to know." Written by Gregory Wrightstone of Pittsburgh, the book puts climate change into a geologic context of billions of years -- a perspective derived fromthe author's 35 years as a geologist.Mr. Wrightstone's approach contrasts sharply to theclimate alarmist's use of snapshots of time -- whether a century or adecade or a single storm -- to justify discarding economic systems anddestroying people's lives to reduce global temperatures by fractions of a degree."I know that the brief hundred or so years of recordedtemperatures--and the even shorter time-frame since the first satellitewas launched--is just a blink of a geologic eye," says Mr. Wrightstone."It is too brief a period to evaluate the data adequately."Backed by voluminous studies, "Inconvenient Facts"assures that modern warming is neither unusual nor catastrophic. Of thelast 10,000 years since the last major ice age, 6,100 years were warmerthan today. Humans have thrivedin previous periods significantly warmer than our modern age, mostrecently in the 13th century when Vikings farmed Greenland and citrusgrew in England.Conversely, people have suffered during cold periodssuch as the Little Ice Age (1290-1850), which was marked by famine anddisease. While the Earth has experienced a steady decline incarbon dioxide levels for more than 500 million years, the book says, recent increases of the wrongly maligned gas is tied to a greening of25-50 percent of the Earth -- a positive, fertilizing effect of higherCO2 levels on plants. One apocalyptic myth after another -- from the purportedthreats of rising sea levels to vanishing polar bears -- is destroyed byMr. Wrightstone's collection of research. Rather than a world lurchinginto a man-made climate hell from which there is no return, the Earth'secosystems and humankind are thriving.Written for the non-scientist, the book has more than 90 illustrations and 60 "inconvenient" facts rendered to a sentence ortwo. It effectively debunks proposals for economically destructiveprograms to control the uncontrollable -- a perpetual cycle of glacialice and "blessed warmth" driven by eternal terrestrial and solar forces."(T)he first and most important conclusion is that thecorrect policy to address the non-problem of man-made global warming isto have the courage to do nothing," Mr. Wrightstone says. Nothing, we would add, but to allow humankind thefreedom to advance economically and technologically as it has done sowondrously since the onset of the Industrial Revolution.Sixty nails in climate alarmism's coffin By Jerry Shenk November 16, 2017 There are plenty of well-credentialed, objective, if little-publicized,climate skeptics, but few who are able to present their material inlayman's terms to an audience of curious, unschooled, but receptiveclimate truth-seekers.A new resource provides a point-by-point review and response to each ofthe climate industry's claims, citing the "normalcy" of much of their"alarming" data.  In an entertaining, easy-to-read, elegantly-written,meticulously-researched, well-documented and illustrated 143-page book(including citations) entitled "Inconvenient Facts: The science that Al Gore doesn't want you to know," geologist Gregory Wrightstone presents a clear picture of the climatealarmism that attracts cynical big-government advocates and grips muchof the scientific community, complicit media and the gullible among us.Wrightstone employs government sources, peer-reviewed publications and otherscholarly works to reassure readers that our Earth has become healthierand more prosperous because of rising carbon dioxide and temperaturelevels, rather than in spite of them. The book details sixty inconvenient facts. Considering the climatealarmists' persistent clamor about "scientific consensus." Arguably,Inconvenient Fact #31 should have appeared first: "Science is notconsensus and consensus is not science."  Wrightstone's droll observation about the financial incentives driving manycareer-invested scientists to mislead or overstate the "catastrophic"potential of climate change, often without historical or even Some highlights: Only a trace gas, carbon dioxide isn't the primarygreenhouse gas; CO2's warming effect declines as its concentrationincreases; and CO2 is plant food, so more of it means moister soil, fewer droughts and forest fires, a greener Earth, more plant growth andmore food for humans and animals.Wrightstone also reveals anxiety over rising temperatures to be just anotherclimate alarm shibboleth.  Humans didn't cause 800,000 years ofconstant, normal, cyclical temperature changes, including the past10,000 years, 6,100 of which were warmer than today.  In fact, warminghas paused for nearly two decades despite marginal increases in CO2.Indeed, warmer climates are better than cold ones for humans and most animalspecies. World-wide, annually, there are far more cold-related thanheat-related deaths. Moreover, in addition to a greener Earth, increased CO2 and higher temperatures together provide other shared benefits, including longer growing seasons, more crop cycles and greater humanfood security.Wrightstone's book serves to reinforce beliefs already held by most practical people: Climate does change -- that's indisputable -- but, rather than spending trillions to "fix" it, practical people would first examine observableevidence and, if persuaded, they would adapt -- just as prehistoric Homo sapiens did entering and exiting the last ice age. Presented in a format that allows readers to decide, Wrightstone's book is wellworth the time to read.  Most importantly, perhaps, it will, inunderstandable, usable terms, provide informed skeptics the informationthey need to resist the progressive alarmists who preach to us all.Jerry Shenk can be reached at jshenk2010@gmail.comamericanthinker.com/blog/2017/11/sixty_nails_in_climate_alarmisms_coffin.html#ixzz4yhru1cUm The 'Inconvenient Facts' About Global Warming That Al Gore Does Not Want Us to KnowIn an era where the Democrats' braintrust, socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, areworking to remove beef from the menu to combat global warming, there's an"Inconvenient App" that makes you and me the smartest climate gurus at thedinner table.Derived from Gregory Wrightstone'sbook "Inconvenient Facts: The Science Al Gore Doesn't Want You toKnow," this new app features 60 facts that seriously undermineclaims from collectivists that man-made global warming is destroying theplanet.Tap your Android or iPhone, andthere is a graphic showing that the current warming trend began 300 years ago, wellbefore Henry Ford introduced the Model T or Al Gore invented the internet.Touch a tab to access a briefanalysis, another tab for a video of Wrightstone's commentary, and a third fora list of references. It is amazing how much documented -and coherent -- information is packed into this tiny app, making the smartphonean utterly appropriate resource and you a smugly clever person. Now in its third printing, the bookhas led Wrightstone, a Pittsburgh-based geologist, to scores of television andradio shows and to presentations at colleges, conferences and communitymeetings.Backed by voluminous studies,"Inconvenient Facts" assures readers that modern warming is neither unusual norcatastrophic. Of the last 10,000 years since the last major ice age, 6,100years were warmer than today (Inconvenient Fact #20). Humans have thrived inprevious periods significantly warmer than our modern age, most recently in the13th century, when Vikings farmed Greenland and citrus grew in England.Conversely, people have sufferedduring cold periods such as the Little Ice Age (1290-1850), which was marked byfamine and disease. While the Earth has experienced asteady decline in carbon dioxide levels for more than 500 million years, thebook says, recent increases of the wrongly maligned gas is tied to a greeningof up to 50 percent of the Earth -- a positive, fertilizing effect of higher CO2levels on plants (Inconvenient Fact #37).One apocalyptic myth after another --from purported threats of rising sea levels to vanishing polar bears -- isdestroyed by Wrightstone's collection of research. Rather than a world lurchinginto a man-made climate hell from which there is no return, the Earth'secosystems and humankind are thriving.Written for the non-scientist, thebook and the app effectively debunk proposals for economically destructiveprograms to control the uncontrollable -- a perpetual cycle of glacial ice and"blessed warmth" driven by eternal terrestrial and solar forces."The first and most importantconclusion is that the correct policy to address the non-problem of man-madeglobal warming is to have the courage to do nothing," Wrightstone says. This message is sure to interruptthe agenda of Marxists attempting to use fear of the fantasy of man-made globalwarming to advance their dark designs. The message will also have thebenefit of promoting inevitable bouts of indigestion in the less informed amongus at the dinner table.First published at Polizette By Chris Salcedo | February 21, 2019lifezette.com/2019/02/the-inconvenient-facts-about-global-warming-that-al-gore-does-not-want-us-to-know/  Hammering Nails Into Man-Made Global Warming's CoffinI have a confession to make. I am a climate change skeptic and becoming more so seemingly by the day. It is not that I don't believe that the Earth has warmed over the last 150 or so years, the science clearly supports that contention. I am, however, skeptical of the notion that humans are now responsible for temperature changes and that increasing temperatures are leading to horrible climate-related consequences for the Earth and humanity. While I am certainly not a scientist nor an expert on climate change, I have consumed a large number of books from both sides of the issue and have an amply stocked bookshelf in my den on the subject. I find that most of books on climate are difficult for the non-scientist to read, much less digest. They tend to be overly technical for the layman, not well-illustrated and commonly overly-politicized.I discovered my now go-to climate change book "Inconvenient Facts - the science that Al Gore doesn't want you to know" quite by accident nearly six months ago and it is becoming dog-eared from my constant referencing of it. Geologist Gregory Wrightstone's debut book is eminently readable, understandable and very well-illustrated. With more than 90 color illustrations and 14 pages of references, the book treads a hard-to-manage balance between well-researched science and a fascinating read.Throughout the book, the author provides easily understandable graphics and analysis of his 60 "inconvenient facts." These are facts, backed up by references to NASA, NOAA or peer-reviewed studies, that show in detail and clarity just how wrong much of what I thought that I knew is incorrect. Wrightstone opens the book with a perfectly apropos quote from H. L. Mencken who references the need for governments and institutions to create "an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary" in order to get its citizens to buy into otherwise harmful policies and regulations. The last half of his book is devoted to dispelling many of these climate "hobgoblins" which he calls "climate apocalypse" events.Using science and data, he systematically takes down notions of increasing tornadoes, hurricanes, heat waves, drought and many more.Early in the book, prefacing a series of particularly damning "inconvenient facts," Wrightstone writes that they will be "part of the cumulative evidence that will eventually drive the final nails into the coffin of the catastrophic man-made warming theory." He comes back to this analogy of hammering nails into global warming's coffin throughout this seminal book. Now, Mr. Wrightstone has provided me with the hammer with which to drive the nails in the form of a smart phone app.I have often wished that I had thebook in hand when discussing the subject with colleagues and now, thankfully, the new app allows me to leave the book at home, but to bring the facts with me. The recently released ground-breaking smart phone app is based in his 60inconvenient facts. Each of the facts are presented within the app with a chart or illustration that clearly shows and documents the subject. Included are links to text explaining it, commonly a video created by the author and a link to the source of the data behind the graphic.Simply put, the app is amazing. The huge amount of information on my phone has given me the ability to speak more confidently to others concerning many aspects of climate change. The book is great, but the app is actually more powerful, in that I see that this can be a game-changer in the debate. I envision citizens that now can confront the notion of pending climate doom by empowering them with the knowledge in the palm of their hand.Written by Bryan Crabtree on February 25, 2019First published at ClashDaily.com clashdaily.com/2019/02/hammering-nails-into-man-made-global-warmings-coffin/

From the Author

The genesis of this book was a desire to discover the truth about a link between man's activities and the warming trend that is evident. I trusted no one, so I did a deep dive into the base data and what I found shocked me to the core. In nearly every portion of climate science (which eventually turned into chapters), I found that what I was told by the media was contradicted by the science, facts and data.

The inconvenient truth about Al Gore is that he only took 2 science classes, and barely passed those. In case you didn't know, his predictions, like every other climate alarmist since the 1920's, were wrong. He did, however, major in religion, and has successfully created a new religion, Environmentalism, to which millions of uninformed people have blindly subscribed. Simple, concise and easy to read, this book shows how so-called "scientists" have taken studies and data and cherry-picked, changed, or otherwise misconstrued it to achieve a desired and false outcome. To hear supposedly educated people keep repeating "the polar bears will be extinct without the ice" makes me laugh every time, but it's just one of the myths of climate change that people really believe. Polar bears use ice floes for the same reason you take the bus- it's just easier. Like us, they're not stupid, just a little lazy. The polar ice caps have melted before, and the bears did just fine. In fact, they're doing better now in places that have no ice left than in places that have ice (more food). More CO2 in the atmosphere means more moisture in the air and soil, which means more plants, more food, and healthier animals and humans. I asked a local meteorologist why he (and 99% of all meteorologists) didn't believe in "man-made global climate change". He said, "Because I already have a job." You'll notice the only meteorologists and physicists who do subscribe to it work for government-funded "associations" or foreign governments, and say, "Yes, we believe, so the U.S. and Germany need to give us some money, so we can combat this". This is the biggest fraud in human history. Read this book, it's only about 125 pages, and stop listening to all those people who have a political or monetary agenda. Warm is good (for everybody). Oh, by the way: It's not "97%" of scientists who believe in man-made climate change- it's less than 3%. Al lied, based on a "study" that was false, and the environmentalists just keep repeating it over and over, hoping eventually it will be accepted as fact. It is not "settled science", except in the minds of the climate police. And FYI- neither England nor Florida have been submerged yet, as has been predicted over and over for the past hundred years. Just sayin'. Look up petitionproject online to see the petition 31,000 real scientists sent to congress.

Wrightstone's "Inconvenient Facts" is a prolific collection of analyses on various common climate change topics that are frequently referred to by those in the media and society who would claim that the climate apocalypse is upon us. But through careful study and presentation of real facts and real evidence, this book addresses each issue frequently brought up by alarmists and explains how, rather than being on the brink of self-destruction, we're actually doing pretty well here on Earth. The bottom line is that Earth has been changing and will continue to change for billions of years, but the human contribution and impact in these changes is ultimately negligible in the grand scheme of Earth's existence.I would highly recommend this book to everyone who has doubts, or just wants the full picture, of the frequently raised issues that are commonly heard in (especially) the liberal media and such groups. Science should not be politicized, ever, or at least we should avoid it as much as possible. So-called climate change has been immensely politicized to the extent that now science is being misrepresented, and the scientific method itself has been thrown out the window. To the reader, please take a look at this book and consider each point carefully and openly.

Yes science is real. Cherry picked climate data used for political gain by liberal politicians isn’t science. Nor do scientists trading integrity for funding and political influence produce real science. Climate change is real. Has been forever. How convenient that some believe a mystical tax solves a complex issue. Climate alarmism is simply a ploy by the left to grow government authority, raise taxes and dissolve national identity in favor of elitist globalism. But if you can put it on a bumper sticker, lemmings will follow. Check your condescension, open your mind and have a read.

Presents the actual data on all aspects of the global warming/climate change issue, showing that climate change is mostly natural and does not threaten mankind. The data show no correlation between atmospheric temperature and CO2, therefore reducing CO2 by reducing fossil fuels will not affect temperature and will forego many benefits, mostly harming lower income people and underdeveloped populations. The data does not support the claim that severe weather events are increasing, not in frequency or intensity. The geologic temperature record shows that the earth's atmosphere has been warmer than today numerous times in the past when CO2 levels were lower.

Finally, a book to challenge the falsehoods presented by a portion of our society. Climate change has always been with us. Greg’s book is an eye-opener and disproves many of the false notions about CO2. His book is easy to read, even easier to understand (in color) and meticulously documented. This book supports a very different narrative than popular apocalyptic ending of mankind by human- driven climate change. The “consensus” popular opinion is clearly at odds with reality. Greg’s book presents that The Earth and it’s ecosystems (humans) are thriving because of increasing CO2 and slightly rising temperatures, not in spite of it. Policy decisions based on non-problems of man- made global warming are a mistake. What Greg’s book accomplishes is to provide an alternate, researched platform for informed discussions. It is also a challenge to scientists to remember to uphold the integrity of their profession. Every scientific theory in our history has been challenged and proven/ disproven. No scientific theory should have debate cut off for political reasons. Lastly, this review represents my opinions, and my opinions only. They do not represent my employer or any business or family or professional connection.

Grace to Lead: Practicing Leadership in the Wesleyan Tradition, Revised Edition

Review

Christian leadership is theological from beginning to end. Carder and Warner explore the rich Wesleyan theological grounding for such leadership with its abundant emphasis on grace. They remind readers that for Wesley, all methods emerge from the theological imperatives and missional direction of God revealed in Christ. Lovett H. Weems Jr., Distinguished Professor of Church Leadership, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world is the mission of The United Methodist Church, and the Wesleyan tradition provides a wealth of resources for this missional work. It provides a proven and effective "method" for forming and equipping Christians to join Jesus Christ and his mission of witnessing to the coming reign of God. In Grace to Lead the authors provide a guide to the practice of missional leadership in the Wesleyan tradition. Pastors and congregational leaders will be enriched and inspired by the wisdom and insight contained in this book. Steven W. Manskar, Director of Wesleyan Leadership, Discipleship Ministries of The United Methodist Church The one thing that separates church from secular leadership is our faith in God through Jesus Christ and with the Holy Spirit. Bishop Ken Carder and Dr. Laceye Warner continue to remind us of this fact in Grace to Lead. Church leadership is spiritual leadership, and Ken and Laceye provide the groundwork with a Wesleyan distinctiveness for us to reflect upon and enact. This is a "must read" for all of us who continue to study and work on our leadership skills. Grant Hagiya, Resident Bishop of the Los Angeles Area"

If you want to understand Methodist practice, theology and worldview this book will help you get your feet wet. If you want to understand a larger scope of Western Christianity then this book is not for you. It has very little cross-application unless you are coming from a Methodist or Wesleyan tradition. This is not to say the book is a failure but it is to say the book has a very specific language to a very specific audience. I could go into the details but if you come from another Protestant tradition you may struggle to find common ground and application points.

"Christian leadership is defined, formed, and shaped by, as well as rooted and deployed in accordance with, who God is, where God is, what God is doing, and what God would have individuals and communities be and do. Leadership in the Christian community is a sharing in the life and mission of the triune God, which means that it begins, continues, and ends in communion with, obedience to, and praise of the God we know as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Such leadership is much more than institutional direction and management." This densely packed statement about the character of Christian leadership is from a new book written by Bishop Ken Carder and Dr. Laceye Warner. Both these authors teach at Duke University Divinity School. Their book, Grace to Lead: Practicing Leadership in the Wesleyan Tradition, is a clear and concise guide for the formation and practice of Christian leadership. As the title indicates, the book focuses on approaches to leadership derived from the theology and ministry of John and Charles Wesley. When Carder and Warner look at the life and witness of the Wesley brothers and the movement they lead, they see that leadership is rooted in doctrine and mission. This is countercultural for much of the leadership literature circulating in the church today. They teach that leadership is rooted in technique, relevance and power. The goal of leadership is organizational success; with success judged according to market standards. When applied to the church, this market-oriented approach to leadership is dependent upon programs with broad appeal and satisfying perceived needs of members all with the goal of attracting as many people as possible. An alternative to such market oriented leadership strategies is to focus on the historic doctrine of the church that direct the church toward participation in God's mission for the world. This shifts the telos, or goal, of leadership from institutional success to missional faithfulness. It shifts the focus ministry from the church and onto God and God's mission in the world. Reading the works of John and Charles Wesley reveal that leadership is derived from a life steeped in grace; the power and presence of God in the world. Leaders are persons who habitually open themselves to this grace and freely share it with others. This means that leadership and discipleship are inseparable. In the Wesleyan tradition leaders are persons who practice the disciplines of love known as "means of grace." These practices form their identity and worldview in ways that conform them to the image of Christ. One implication of this, according to Carder and Warner, is that authority for leadership is derived more from baptism than ordination. Grace to Lead is the best book on leadership in the Wesleyan tradition I have encountered. It is an excellent resource for small group study. The authors include questions to lead discussion at the end of each chapter. My prayer is that Grace to Lead will be on every Bishop's "required reading" list in every annual conference in 2011.

Vague rubbish.

Great book, easy read

Don't let my "3-star" rating fool you, this is an excellent book. But don't bother if you plan to hike the Deerfield Valley - there is really only two (maybe three) routes in what is known as southern Vermont's hikers' paradise. But if you plan on hiking around the Connecticut River Valley, this guide may be just the thing for you. It includes detailed information on flora, fauna, and even some historical and archeological information. Well worth the price, no matter where you plan to hike.
