They are, with the number of described points-of-interest in parenthesis: Westminster to Camden (35), Temple to Angel (38), Tower Bridge to Shoreditch (26), Marylebone to Shepherd's Bush (14), Westminster to Hammersmith (10), South Bank to Brixton (15), Whitechapel to Woolwich (19), Greater London - North (20), and Greater London - South (14). There's also a bonus section listing thirty-five Unusual Bars, Cafes, and Restaurants around town.Each area is prefaced both with a color map showing major streets and a numerical listing of the points-of-interest for that area; the numbers are positioned on the map.The majority of the points-of-interest are described by a single color photo and a half-page to a full page of text that includes address, website, phone number, hours, admission fee (if any), and nearest Tube station. Once you feel familiar with a given city, how do you start to delve into the place at a deeper level? We took Secret London “An Unusual Guide†and it was a delightful way of finding some new and unusual things to see.We were based Fitzrovia/Bloomsbury and so focused on some of the suggestions for that area. An interesting excursion to The Hardy Tree, in Old St Pancras Churchyard (just 5 minutes’ walk from at the back of St Pancras, was a bit of a revelation. How often had I passed by that graveyard without realizing the gems within.Author Thomas Hardy originally trained as an architect and was involved in clearing graves to make way for the extension of the Midland Railway. Dealings with dead informed his writing in later years. Today, those stacked up gravestones have been incorporated into a tree over the years and makes for a real blend of man-made and natural elements. The same graveyard offers up the tomb for John Soane (architect of Dulwich Picture Gallery, also mentioned in the book). This provided inspiration for the iconic red telephone boxes that dotted the city until very recently. Who know?Have you noticed the caryatids at St Pancras Church, modeled on the Erechtheum of the Acropolis? Now rather blackened because of its location on, Euston Road. Sculptor Charles Rossi constructed them off site and when they were transported from his studio to the church, he discovered they were too tall. He thus cut out their midriffs.And the gems just keep rolling in. A lovely guidebook to take you away from the big tourist attractions….
A lot of useful information. I hope to find some out of the way places to discover on my upcoming visit to London. It has been 30 years since my last visit, so a lot has changed, I am sure. I prefer to find unusual spots wherever I go, so I try to find this sort of guide before traveling. The book has a lot of interesting and unusual spots to visit, and the maps with marked locations, done by city areas, look to be especially great for allowing my and my travel buddy to find interesting side junkets on top of the big, "must see" things (like theater and Buckingham palace, for which we have tickets.)
This book is great, already through part of it. I understand that the average tourist wants to hit the common places, but just in case, its always good to steal away to find the small out of the way places. I have been to London several times and purchased this for my husband. We both love it and look forward to using it as we just found out we are moving to London for a bit...so excited to see all the little out of the way places! Thanks for writing such a fantastic book!
In the last two years, I have been to London four times and wanted to see less touristy things this time around. This book is awesome and just what I needed! I have a couple of friends who live in London (even one who was born and raised) - and even they didn't know about some of the things in this book. Had many great adventures thanks to the spots listed in the book. Also, for days I didn't want to carry the book around, I made a xerox copy of the maps and highlighted the locations I wanted to see that day, and was able to just walk around and find the locations just fine.
We used this guide on a recent visit to London, and found it useful, opening doors to the obscure we might not have noticed. The descriptions are accurate as far as we tested them, and the format is portable. There is another book with the same title - get both! More fun than Pokemon Go.
This is a great book packed with a lot of information covering all the different sections of London. I was surprised with how dense it was and with the great production quality. If you're looking for things to do beyond the normal touristy stuff, pick this up. It is delightful.

Skateboarder/writer Sean Mortimer, who helped Rodney Mullen and Tony Hawk with their autobiographies, brings you a wonderful new book about skating. This volume is a collection of interviews on skateboarding and skate culture from a variety of people within the skateboarding subculture and industry. It's far more thorough and detail than I expected when I bought it sight-unseen. If you are at all interested in the history or culture of the sport, this volume is indespensible.
I grew up skating with and watching these guys, brings back so many memories for me that I have read it so many times...it's showing wear.

The Dogtown movies got people interested in the history of skateboarding, but Sean Mortimer's book throws a wider net to encompass some of the biggest names in skating. It's not a book about contests, sponsorships and who made up what tricks (although that is a component of the book). To me it really was a celebration of what skating meant to-, did for- and brought about in the lives of these skaters. Readers will find out how some of these guys used skating to escape unhappy family lives; how it feels to be a celebrity at 14 and then a has-been at 18; what it's like to be so obsessed with a "hobby" that nothing else matters. There are funny stories about being on the road; meeting skating idols and then beating them in competition; and a bunch of other inside info that really makes these skaters seem more real than an any X-Games interview can. It's all told in the words of the skaters with great photography.If you have any interest in skateboarding get this book.
As a skateboarder, I found this a very interesting book. I simply couldn't put it down. It largely consists of extracts of interviews with skateboarders about all aspects of skateboarding and is written in their own words.This is fortunate because Sean Mortimer is not a good writer. He ghost-wrote Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen's autobiographies and did not do a good job at all. I've seen articles written by both Hawk and Mullen in skateboard magazines over the years and in my opinion both can write better than Mortimer. Those two books are both readable - but only because the stories themselves are so compelling. The writing style is amateurish to say the least. Mortimer should have stuck to skating. Unfortunately, his poor writing does creep into Stalefish via the small introductory sections. Mercifully, these can be skipped.
While Sean's work on Rodney Mullen's biography wasn't quite what I hoped, Stalefish is an awesome, often intriguing collection of almost roadtrip tales from the legends who've made skateboarding into what it is today.There's a lot of funny stories here making you realize just how haphazard the whole skate scene was back in the 1980's and early 1990's.The layout and the production values are excellent too. Highly recommended to especially those who grew up on skateboarding back in the day.
Bought this book for English class during my first semester in college. Really provides you with a better understanding of skateboarding and its history. The book features a versatile selection of legendary skateboarders. I was fortunate enough meet Sean, and got my copy signed. Awesome author and awesome book!

The book arrived in a timely fashion and in excellent condition. It is an interesting account of a sad chapter in British and Middle Eastern history that explains some of the problems of present day Yemen.

Great book for anyone with basic to no knowledge of ID. Very clear and in depth too.

Great content but this book itself had stains and writing throughout.
This is my go-to manual for ID. I find it accessible and thorough in its coverage of the most essential ID concepts. I have read the previous edition, too (see my pic!). Instructional design is a dry but important topic. It's the difference between a course that bores you to tears or changes your life. The authors have treated it well here.
Very reasonably priced handbook of the essentials for beginners. Some of the other resources online are overwhelming for my students, and this breaks it down in digestible chunks with easy to understand language.Not sure why the other individual who reviewed had to take out anger of having to pay for a book out on the authors. Granted, everything may be online, but the authors took the time to bring it together in a coherent form. eLearning is ever changing, but the concepts will apply to both instructional design and eLearning in the future.
