I already have found this volume a helpful resource. The chapters are short, the style is simple (much appreciated). I have learned in the few days I have had it a few things I never knew. My quibble is that the American Holiness Movement and her spiritual grandfather John Wesley seem to be ignored. In the early 19th century (in the USA) some believe that one of three Americans were Methodist. Francis Asbury was the second most recognized person by face in what was the entire nation then. Pietism is mentioned, but I fail to see how you could devote as much material as is given to Moody or say, John Piper and totally ignore Wesley or contemporary theologians like Dallas Willard (who taught on spiritual formation but emphasized the need for sanctification in all his works), or even Oswald Chambers, whose devotional books have influenced American Christianity immensely. I am pleased that Clark Pinnock and Roger Olson were given some mention. I consider Olson one of the most thoughtful practical and historical theologians writing today. Not everyone I have mentioned might want to be categorized as a Wesleyan or “holiness” theologian, unless the author intended the category of Pietism or Pentecostalism to serve as an umbrella for the larger movement of Wesleyan leaning thinkers. I was not really surprised by this (in my view) omission, but was a bit let down. There are places where the American Holiness Movement and the larger Wesleyan Movement intersect with Pietism and Classical Pentecostal doctrine, but there are distinctions that should have been made, just to cover all bases, if you will

Zondervan, the slave of Southern Baptist theology, does nothing new here. MacGregor plays it safe in every respect, highlighting only the parts of contemporary theology that support pre-existing bias and dismissing challenges to Southern Baptist theology. His writing is choppy, stunted, redundant, and unnecessarily dense to prove his foundation in philosophy - NOT theology. This text could have been far more interesting, challenging, and informative if Zondervan's editorial team published material that reflected Christian beliefs (not just Evangelical beliefs) and had actually done their job to make MacGregor's work readable. This book is primarily useful to professors who can fill in the obvious shortcomings and who want to assign a text that is cheap for their students.

Dr. MacGregor has done a wonderful job in providing an accessible resource to those interested in the more modern manifestations of the theological landscape. This important work will equip the believer to become familiar with all of the major theological developments of the modern era. This is vitally important given the vast ignorance of the developments of modern theology and misapprehensions of the streams of thought that effect both for the better or worse the church today. I purchased the Kindle edition as well as the audio lectures that can also be purchased on audible. As an Christian apologist, I found this work to be very useful, and while not an apologetic work itself, there is still great apologetic value in understanding the various developments theologically that have developed within the past 200 years. Highly recommended!

Review

One of Paste Magazine’s 15 Best Fantasy Novels of 2018PRAISE FOR Tess of the Road:"This achingly real portrayal of a young woman whose self-loathing takes help to heal is a perceptive examination of rape culture rare in high fantasy. Not to be ignored, this is also a fascinating road trip adventure. Absolutely essential." --Starred Review, Booklist"Like Tess' journey, surprising, rewarding, and enlightening, both a fantasy adventure and a meta discourse on consent, shame, and female empowerment." --Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews"[A] rousing adventure set in a richly drawn world. . . . I loved this book. Beautifully written, perfect tone (occasional humor, tho it's not a comedy). It's a lovely, thoughtful, imaginative exploration of faith and how it can be contorted to harm people who are still figuring out who they are and who they want to be (Tess, in fact tries on several personas thru the text). And, how people can recover their faith, make it their own, and heal. It's at times lighthearted and at times darkly serious, not shying away from past trauma, and readers who struggle reading stories of abuse should tread carefully.I will say, after reading some of the other posted reviews, that while Tess of the Road is its own story, readers will probably enjoy it more if they read Seraphina first. Seraphina lingers in more detail over the world building, the role of dragons and the way dragons exist in this world, etc; Tess of the Road doesn't spend much time reiterating these world building elements, so I can understand why some readers might have been frustrated. I love revisiting this world and look forward to Hartman's next book!

This book is wonderful, but you have to go into it understanding that the protagonist is (intentionally) an unlikeable screw-up (with a heart of gold). To that end, I had a real issue with Tess at first. But since I love Rachel Hartman's other books, I gave it all of my attention and put my faith in her, and it paid off. Tess of the Road takes you on an amazing journey with twists you don't see coming, and gives you characters you shouldn't like but do anyway. One thing to keep in mind is that the fantasy elements here are very small—it's not a book about dueling wizards and spectacular feats of sorcery on every page. It's more about a girl coming to understand her place in the world and that she's maybe not as big of a screw-up as everyone has led her to believe.

I feel like every time I read one of Rachel Hartman's books, not only does the writing get better, but what surrounds the writing gets better. I wasn't expecting this book to cover so much ground that it did, and I definitely think the author contacted the right sensitivity readers when she wrote about a paraplegic character. But that's perhaps not a good enough reason to read the book, so let me explain why this book is so good! This book is all about Tess, a character who I believe was named after another famous Tess, Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Like Hardy's Tess, this Tess is a girl with a terrible lot in life. She was taken advantage of by a man, and had her life slip out of her control before her eyes, and now she's angry and frustrated and snippy and rude. Tess has nowhere to go... until she decides to make her own way into the world and goes on an adventure on The Road.I came in expecting this book not to be as mystical or magical as the books about Seraphina, if only because Tess is a normal girl without dragon's blood and no special abilities otherwise. But I was wrong! Tess journeys with a quigult friend who is on a very spiritual pilgrimage and who lends a lot of fun and creativity to the story. And even the mundane parts of the story are very entertaining. Tess discovers more about herself and it's satisfying to watch her grow and change throughout the book.I very much enjoyed this book, and I'm very much looking forward to reading more of Tess's adventures. Super recommended!

Wow. As a young woman reading this book I was a little nervous that it was going to be targeted towards a younger audience, and while it is about a teenage girl, it strikes some awesome chords of the truth that young troubled women find in growing up. I feel like so many young women have the same experiences that Tess has and while shes so unlikable in some aspects, I really feel like I felt the same kind of unlikable when I was Tess' age. I felt for her. This book was painful, but it was so beautiful. Highly recommend to young women who had trouble finding their footing in the world as youth/teenagers. Love it!

Tess Dombegh is the younger half sister of Seraphina, the champion of the two prior books set in this beautifully rendered world of saints and dragons, and it is Tess's story we pick up in this next chapter. From the previous books, we know Seraphina's younger siblings mostly as bratty inconveniences for Seraphina to bear, but in this book, Tess is given her chance to stand center stage alongside such richly developed supporting characters that it could certainly be read as a stand alone (though don't skip Seraphina and Shadow Scale altogether -- they are lovely as well). The story follows our "brat", Tess, as she begins to reject the incredibly stifling life she felt she deserved after committing heinous sins (the details of which are slowly revealed over the course of the novel). She has been lead to believe (as many deeply fundamentalist religions convey) that her very existence as a woman is sinful in and of itself, and that she has committed the worst sin by "falling" as no good woman should. So, at age 17, facing decisions made for her by her deeply religious mother and her incompetent father, she strikes out on her own, finding company in her childhood quigutl friend, who sets an adventurous quest at her feet for them to follow. And follow she does, revealing her anything -but-sinful nature as she encounters many brilliant characters along the way. This borders on a spoiler, but I feel it's important to mention a CW: this book deals with rape, sexual shame, and ultimately, infant loss. While I'm no longer in a place where these types of storylines would destroy me, I found myself incredibly sad and tearful many times as her story was revealed, and feel most responsible sharing that warning with those who may *not* be in a place to read such moving and detailed descriptions of sex without consent, without understanding consent, against a very young teenager, and such details of premature birth/subsequent infant death.

Wow. It is probably too late for me, now. I had this book for months based on a recommendation and allowed it to collect dust. As I finally picked it up and read it, at the end of things, I realize what a mistake that was. So much of my relationship was in here and ways to work through it. I suggest if you feel yours is in trouble, get this book and work it!

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and this is one of my favorite books, and certainly one of the best couples books I've read. The suggestions are simple, and based on years of research. I have given this book to people I know who are struggling in their relationships.

"What Makes Love Last?" really opened my eyes, the quizzes helped me to assess and evaluate where my relationship is and he uses study cases to allow you great perspective/understanding. Gottman gives great coaching/guidance on how to evaluate & handle situations in your love relationship and how you can work through them. The stories and examples really help to give a great understanding of what concepts, situations and resolutions are to come from the word of his work. I definitely would recommend this to anyone - even if everything is "perfect" and/or someone or couple is not in the best place in their relationship, there are great things to discover by reading this book.

Amazon-- In this insightful book, celebrated research psychologist and couples counselor John Gottman plumbs the mysteries of love….Where does love come from? Why does some love last, and why does some fade? And how can we keep it alive? Based on laboratory findings, this book shows readers how to identify signs, behaviors, and attitudes that indicate a fraying relationship and provides strategies for repairing what may seem lost or broken.Goodreads: IN THIS WISE, ACCESSIBLE, AND LONG-AWAITED BOOK, ….Gottman has spent decades observing the conversational patterns and biorhythms of thousands and thousands of couples in his famous Love Lab. Now he applies this research to fundamental questions about trust and betrayal. Doubts are common in relationships. Partners often worry. Can I trust my partner? Am I being betrayed? How do I know for sure? With a gift for translating complex scientific ideas into insightful and practical advice, Gottman explains how a couple can protect or recover their greatest gift, their love for one another.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This book is light and fairly easy to read. That is deceptive. It is a life-saver and one that I dearly wish was in my life when I was stumbling around. Read it if you want to learn about keeping trust in relationships. Oh wonder! Our biology wants closeness with others, yet we often undermine our most important love relationships. My five takehomes may be helpful to you in your needs-of-today.1) We are limbic beings, mammals, we need attachment. Connection is not optional for living a good life. We are more efficient when we trust and live longer with it. Mistrust with those close to us is extremely draining psychically/physically.2) This book has many fixits to restore trust, including detailed and useful surveys for couples to use. One whole chapter says “good relationships needs good sex.” And many lessons on “Learning Trust.”3) Gottman has a lot of lovely phrases that can help us to keep good habits of loving: Blame+ is the “Roach motel for lovers;” relational experiences go in the nice box, the neutral box, or the nasty box; do you walk through your partners proffered “Sliding door moment?” The “Ziegarnack effect” is that memories of unfinished business do not fade with time. You might notice the downward spiral of a relationship when you either start to have “Negative sentiment override;” and/or “negative comps”—comparing current partner with imagined other partners.4) Couples spending a lot of time in the Neutral Box [neither nasty nor nice] of emotionally un-flooded communication is very healing; especially if you can be emotionally neutral while noticing disagreements. Another way of saying—being non-reactive to a relationship’s emotional weather is darn important. Humor rocks!5) This book describes the ten kinds of betrayal of trust in relationships; sexual cheating is but one. Thank you, John and Nan for telling us as so much, so painlessly! And Kim for tightening this piece, nicely.

John Gottman writes well, if not a little dry at times. This is more a science approach to love with lots of science based examples. Best heard as an Audio inside the car.

A working book with a lot of information for those who want a better picture of the state of marriage. The test, although helpful and insightful, do take time to complete and it helps if both partners are engaged and committed to the process. What Makes Love Last?: How to Build Trust and Avoid Betrayal

A very good book on relationships. On their pitfalls and how to climb out of those.I found the chapter on infidelity especially helpful.

This book gave quite a bit of insights and skill sets one can learn to better not only a marriage, but a relationship. I would highly recommend it.

I don't understand why professors use books like this. I'm not knocking the value of the information in this book, but for the price, it's not worth it. Given the topic of the book, much of this information can be taught thoroughly using information form free online sources.

purchased as required reading for my college course. Its a good book and very helpful for young adults in college.

When i got a used book i expected it to be written in but didnt think the pages would be torn out. Im a tad disappointed about that but at least it was cheap and i have a book for school

The condition is pretty bad !! I have to say that it is not worth that much

Very good book to think in your career

Most of the reading is there but some of the assignments are ripped out.

Although my children are not yet of college age, I read this book to gain a better understanding of all the factors and decisions that my kids will need to consider to answer one of life's most important questions - What do I want to do when I grow up? While no one book will answer this question for you, Turning Points does a fantastic job of walking through all the major decisions to guide you along the way. Part 1, titled "Preparing for success: Understanding who you are and what you need to know" provides a thoughtful set of questions, self-assessments, and suggestions to help you more deeply explore what makes you tick and how to bring your unique values, skills, and personality to bear on your life's work. Part 2, titled "Setting a direction: Choosing a field, preparing for it, and showing you are qualified" leads you through all the daunting steps to face and succeed in today's challenging job market. Finally, Part 3, titled "Making your experience count: Practical advice for reaching your career goals" outlines strategies to better prepare for your career while still in college. After reading this book, I feel better prepared to talk with my kids about their careers, and will be holding on to this wonderful resource for when them to read too!

#35,883 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a beautiful hardbound book, although I must say that it would probably be easier to color in a more paperback or spiral bound format. The images are generally abstract. There are 6 chapters (Mandalas, Water Scenes, Wooded Scenes, etc.) which divide up the book. Each separated section preface is done in a different color. There are 100 templates in the book. The pages are not perforated and are not easy to remove. There is one blank page at the end of each section that can be used for your own drawings or notes. It would be really nice to perforate the sheets in future printings. Also, I believe there are 4-5 different volumes, such as Color Me Calm, Color Me Happy, etc.), and depending on how well you like this book, it would be worth considering having a complete set.

Love it! Who would know there would be coloring books for adults. MY only recommendation on these beautiful books (I have purchased 5) is that they should be spiral bound so they lay flat when you color. You have to somewhat fight with the left side to keep the book open.

â€œColor Me Stress Free” is another fun addition in the "Color Me" coloring book series. Of 77 designs I counted in the book, 17 are what I would categorize as mandalas. The designs in this book are detailed and intricate. Some have small areas to color which may require sharp pencils or pens/markers with ultra-fine points. The book has seven chapters, which include: Disorganization, Relationships, Finances, Work, Health, Time and Travel and Commuting. Each chapter has a lead-in which describes the intent of the designs within. There are color tips at the beginning of the book and there are some fully and some partially colored examples throughout (at the beginning of each chapter. The designs are detailed and some include intricate and small areas to color. This is what I found while looking through and coloring in this book:77 Designs for stress-free coloring - Designs by Angela PorterDesigns are printed on one side of the pagePaper is medium weight, white (with color print on the back of the page), slightly rough and non-perforatedSewn BindingDesigns do not merge into the binding. All designs either have a framing line at the outer edges or have finished edges (such as a mandala.)The book is thick but could be opened to a fairly flat position without breaking the spineAlcohol-based markers bleed through the pageWater-based markers, India ink pens and gel pens leave shadows on the back of the pageColoring pencils, both oil and wax-based, worked well with this paper. I was able to layer the same color for deep pigment. I could layer multiple colors and blend easily using a pencil style blending stick.

This is a very nice book, but I am very disappointed that this book was mainly zentangle. I have Color Me Happy and Color Me Calm and they both diserve at least 10 stars. I love the variety in both Happy and Calm. Trees, houses, mountains, people, food, musical instruments, flowers, mandalas, zentangle and more. Stress Free doesn't have that. It is a nice book, but not wonderful like the other two.

I enjoy coloring, and this is a nicely bound book. It's 208 pages, with a lovely introduction, and coloring tips. The book itself is divided into 7 Chapters: Disorganization, Relationships, Finances, Work, Health, Time and Travel and Communicating. There is a brief introduction to each chapter, and while I can see some people enjoying and mediating on the subject of each chapter, it really isn't for me. Some drawings are semi coloured, leaving you to fill in the other area, however the majority are fully black and white illustrations, just ready for your handy medium of choice. I prefer using artist grade, wax based colored pencils. One thing I do with all my coloring books, because I can be a bit heavy handed when shading, is to put a few pieces of paper, or cardboard under your current page, so your coloring doesn't effect the next picture. There are also lovely pastel printed pages on the left side, so your work is on the right. It makes for a tranquil coloring experience. I really have been enjoying these pages, and do find they are great at helping me unwind after a hard day. The binding is fine, it will let you press the pages flat without breaking. Only four stars, because I do feel some illustrations are repeated from their other books, and also because I really didn't care for the semi colored pages. That's just my personal taste, I prefer to let my creativity out, and have fun, then follow guidelines. Not a deal breaker, there are only a few scattered throughout the book.

The Color Me_________ Series of coloring books are the best adult coloring books on the market! The books are divided into several chapters, each having a theme. At the beginning of each chapter there is an inspirational statement, reaffirming life. There is a nice balance of simple to intricate designs to keep the novice and advanced artist interested and busy! The pages are filled with everyday things and beautiful mandalas. Constructed of heavyweight paper, printed on one side, colored pencils glide. Gel pens and water based markers will not bleed through. Alcohol based markers will. Like all books a blotter is recommended just in case. The cover is make of a stiffer cardboard, and the pages are stitched in the binding. You can lay the book flat without breaking the binding. The only drawback is that you can not remove the pages since they are not perforated. These books are like potato chips...once you have one you'll want the others!!

Review

Praise for Thirty Million Words“[Suskind has] written a book that gives parents the tools they need to maximize their children’s potential, one word at a time.”—Pregnancy and Newborn“Parents, other caregivers, and early childhood educators will be moved and inspired by this work.”—Library Journal, starred review“Suskind's vision is empowering, her methods are surprisingly simple to execute, and the results have been proven to nurture children toward becoming stable, empathetic adults. Informative, exciting new data that confirms the significant benefits gained by talking to your child.”—Kirkus Reviews    “Dr. Dana Suskind has written a passionate, engaging and informed account of the importance of early exposure to language in child development. It is a valuable 'call to words' for parents, educators, and anyone invested in the success and well-being of children.”—James Heckman, University of Chicago, Nobel Laureate   “Dr. Dana Suskind is a one-person change agent. In this beautifully written book, she infuses the wisdom of a physician with the heart of a mother. Parents, policy makers and educators, this book is for you. It is informative, compassionate and a call to action designed to enrich our greatest natural resource, our children.”—Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Temple University, author of Einstein Never Used FlashcardsCan a surgeon help solve poverty and improve equality of opportunity? Dr. Dana Suskind has a simple but effective strategy: more talking, with more complex words directed at children from zero to three mainly by parents.  Her lucid book will persude you that talk and more talk directed at the developing brains of infants and toddlers can drastically improve our country. Read it and try it.”—Ezekiel Emanuel, author of Healthcare, Guaranteed  “Dr. Suskind weaves science and her journey from surgeon to champion for children showing the profound power of words spoken to infants. Anyone who cares about children will benefit from learning how much language shapes our very existence from the earliest age.”—Patricia K. Kuhl, University of Washington, co-author of The Scientist in the Crib   “Thirty Million Words tells the story of a remarkable woman’s unrelenting mission to give every child the chance to thrive. Dana Suskind’s work as a pediatric surgeon with the deaf helped her to understand the amazing power that words have on a child’s development. She offers a simple but profound understanding of how language affects the brain and provides insights into how to create a rich language environment so your child can soar. Every page overflows with warmth and intelligence—share it and become part of something amazing.”—Steven D. Levitt, University of Chicago, coauthor of Freakonomics   “This is a page-turner tale of birth and transformation—the birth of a medical miracle and the transformation of a compassionate surgeon. Dr. Suskind recounts her journey with humor and humility. Her remarkably intimate voice opens up a fresh path alongside those of physician writers Oliver Sacks, Atul Gawande, and Paul Farmer. It will enthrall any reader who is exhilarated by human possibility and inspire the next generation of physicians.”—Dr. Joshua Sparrow, Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital Boston   “How empowering, the realization that each of us can be our children's personal neuro-developer, that the sheer quality of our interactions can impact the attitude of inquiry and health of our kids.  The practical application of Dr. Suskind's work is limitless; as a dad, and as (a “gritty”) someone invested in early child development, I’m excited to see how far it takes us.”—Steve Nash, President, the Steve Nash Foundation and two-time National Basketball Association MVP  “As a pediatrician, I want everyone to read this wonderful book--to understand how health and learning fit seamlessly together as young children develop, and to appreciate the neurological wonder and the social urgency of using language and love to nourish the brains of babies and children everywhere.”—Perri Klass, author of Quirky Kids and National Medical Director of Reach Out and Read “I thank Dana Suskind for opening doors to solutions and hope. The answer to the growing problem of social inequalities in our country is to make use of America’s top two resources: its children and their parents. If we care about this country, and the children who will live in it as adults, we have to make Dr. Suskind’s advice become reality.”—Sandra Gutierrez, Founder and National Director of Abriendo Puertas / Opening Doors   “Grounded upon experience as a cochlear implant surgeon, informed by compelling social science research, and inspired by a profound commitment to children and families, this book helps all of us understand the importance of communicating abundantly, pleasantly, and responsively with infants and toddlers. Tell everyone you know to read it! Together, we can enrich language environments for generations to come, in all types of homes and communities. The book is a gem!”—Ronald F. Ferguson, Faculty Director, the Achievement Gap Initiative, Harvard University   “Straight from the front lines Dr. Dana Suskind tells the story of the power of talk in helping children learn. Easy to read and with striking insights on every page, this book will not only make you think differently about how you parent, but will give you the tools to help your child be at his or her best.”—Sian Beilock, University of Chicago, author of Choke and How the Body Knows its Mind   “Suskind writes with clarity and authority to explain why parents need to talk to their infant children, and why some forms of communication are better than others. Thirty Million Words belongs on the shortlist of books that every parent, teacher, and education policymaker should read.”—Adam Alter, New York University, author of Drunk Tank Pink    “Anyone who cares about children, anyone who cares about the future of this country, should read this book.”—Barbara Bowman, Irving B. Harris Professor, Erikson Institute   “A passionate, personal account of the power all parents have to raise thriving, successful children.”—Diana Mendley Rauner, President, Ounce of Prevention Fund   “Prepare for a revolution. This book will make you cry, laugh, and deeply reflect on what we should be doing to give everyone a chance to succeed in life. As a scholar I was in awe, as a teacher I was dazzled, and as a father I was thankful to the authors of this book. When you pick it up, have a few hours to spare because you will not put it down.  Unequivocal 5 star.”—John A. List, University of Chicago, author of The Why Axis   “Dana Suskind hails others as heroes but she is the true hero! She stepped out of the safe harbor of her role as a pediatric cochlear implant surgeon when she realized that helping deaf children hear was not enough to help them learn language. She takes us on her compelling and page-turning journey, navigating the best research on children’s early learning, always sharing sound and extremely helpful examples of what we all must do to help children learn language and much more, always in joyful and loving ways.”—Ellen Galinsky, President, Families and Work Institute, author of Mind in the Making   “Dr. Suskind’s work reveals that the greatest gift we can give our children is free. How empowering to understand that it doesn’t take money to give our children advantages in the world, it takes words. Her research is vital, and it is our responsibility to make sure Suskind’s message reaches the masses.”—Chris Nee, Creator and Executive Producer, Doc McStuffins“Dr. Suskind’s work is empowering—illuminating that every parent already has what it takes to give their child the best start in life: their words. This account tells the amazing impact of language development on the young child’s developing brain, and provides valuable insight on how we, as parents, educators, and caregivers can create a profound difference in our children’s lives through the simple act of talking with them.  Chicago Children’s Museum has long created rich environments that naturally inspire talk—and we are thrilled that Dr. Suskind’s research provides new evidence of the deep importance and positive effects of these early interactions.”—Jennifer Farrington, President and CEO of Chicago Children’s Museum and Board President of the Association of Children’s Museums “Three cheers for the promise of parents, prevention and neuroplasticity!”—Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, Harvard Medical School  “Captivating! Great examples and an easy read but full of scientific information. Can we make this required reading for couples prior to conception?”—Roberta Golinkoff, University of Delaware, author of How Babies Talk

I completely agree with a previous reader's review that this is a great book but for those who've already been reading up, this book will be redundant. I've read several parenting/child development books including:Bright from the Start: The Simple, Science-Backed Way to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind from Birth to Age 3Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child NeedsEinstein Never Used Flashcards: How Our Children Really Learn--and Why They Need to Play More and Memorize LessThe Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing MindThirty Million Words basically espouses the same things in these books: talk with your child, be responsive and connect with your child. It isn't a terrible book and even for readers who've been delving into the subject already, more reinforcement might be helpful especially since the book give some example dialogues to help enhance the way you interact with your child. If you skip out on this book after reading any of the books above, no harm will be done. It might be worth a skim for habitual readers of parenting and child development literature and is definitely a great introduction for readers who are interested in early childhood literacy and development. For those who are interested in more of the stage by stage development of a baby's language development, I recommend How Babies Talk: The Magic and Mystery of Language in the First Three Years of Life

As an obstetrician, it has always struck me that while expecting parents spend an inordinate amount of time “preparing” for birth, they spend relatively little time once the baby has arrived learning how they can help their child achieve his or her full potential. So for every parent who has a dog eared copy of What to Expect” I say, forget “What to Expect” (It never goes as planned anyway) and instead focus on “What to do” once the baby arrives. And there is no more important book than Dr. Suskind’s book which is a true “how to” have a child that can reach his or her full potential. Not only is this book brilliant, but also it is simply fascinating to read. The style is academic yet approachable, deep yet conversational, and there is an “Ah ha” moment on virtually every page. This is a book that every parent, every grandparent, every childcare provider, every pediatrician, every educator and yes, every obstetrician should read.

I've read so many parenting books and I've been a childcare provider for years so it's very rare for me to come across info that really changes my way of thinking. But this book did it. As a 'millenial' about to become a first-time parent this book completely transformed the way I look at spending time with my child. I was raised in a "fixed mindset" cycle of parenting where my family believed you were born as smart or talented as you ever will be (genetics over environment). I've never bought into that mentality but because of this book I now have the science, practical tools, and proof to back it up! In an increasingly technologically dependent society I think this information is crucial to education and providing the best opportunities to our next generation. I can't wait to share this with friends and family.

One of the BEST books I have read so far. Integrates research with application and is such a pleasant read. I'm a speech-language pathology grad student but I can already say that this book doesn't just apply to language development in infants and children. This book translates to all areas of life- personal relationships, family life, and even the way you view other people. I can only say positive things about this book. 5 stars 100%.

Thirty Million Words (TMW) should be required reading for every parent. It seems obvious that we need to talk to our children, but TMW helps a parent understand the power of words and how to use the right words in the right way. I love how this book lays out the science, the proof, of why this program works and then goes on to give real practical examples of how to talk with even the youngest child to build them to their highest potential. Since I began reading this book, I have made a conscious effort to talk more with my son, my first child, and to utilize every moment with him without technology getting between us and I can really see how much richer our interactions are. Talking with our children is like feeding them, it is a basic necessity. Most parents attend a breastfeeding and/or childcare class before having a baby, learning about how to build your child's brain is no less important, and TMW will help you do it! As a new parent, I really appreciate the confidence I've gained from TMW that I'm equipped with every thing I need to help my child reach his full potential and I know how to go about doing that.

Great read. I wish I would’ve read it b4 the 1st child. 1.5 yrs into the 2nd and will be concentrating even more than we did with the 1st. Awesome flow and connections made regarding the various studies of how we can better enable our children to flourish. Thumbs up all the way.

A lot of data narrated into a compelling story. this was an excellent primer on Early Childhood brain development and used it as a launch pad to describe how we nudge positive language, learning and social emotional for our greatest assets.

This is a book all parents need to read. Talking to our children is oh so important, but I never realized how important until I read Suskind's research and suggestions.

Dana Suskind's book is a call to action for us all! She has taken complex material and ideas and given us the tools to forge a new path for our children. The simple three 'tools' that she offers to us are Tune In, Talk More, and Take Turns. An easy message that can pack a powerful punch and give all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status, the chance to reach their full potential. Dana Suskind and her team are heroes in my eyes. This book can be a game changer if we all help to spread the words (30 million of them!).
