"The Skipton Haunting" is a different horror story that mixes elements of folklore with the daily life of a family that moves to a haunted house. It is a different story because is mainly narrated through dialogue. A vibrant, lively dialogue that uses slang terms and dialect. The characters are defined mainly by their dialogue and their actions, and we see their evolution as a family and the problems they encounter when they move to a haunted house. As they investigate, they discover new facts about the woman, her daughter, and a mysterious entity or demon (I won't mention it, so no spoilers) that terrorize the family. In a metaphorical level, the story has the classical theme of the witch/woman that takes revenge on abusive men, a legend that can be found in the folklore across the world, and in this case, is focused in a concrete area of UK, the triangle formed by Skipton Road, Newton Escomb and Harrogate. So this a local legend, and it was discovered by the author of the book when he moved to the haunted house.As I said, "The Skipton Haunting" is a different horror story, and it uses a dynamic cinematographical approach to narrate the facts. That means a lot of action, conversations centered on the daily life of a family, and visually impacting images. It is mainly a narrated documentary about a family that moves to a haunted house. It was entertained to read because I love old folklore stories. And this story was a discovery.

There have been some complaints about translation quality on the previous books. They are well founded. This is not about the translation getting the meaning wrong, but simply poor quality control. Words get repeated, spelled wrong and sometimes they are just grammatically the wrong word (their instead of they're). They are the kinds of these that could (and should) be caught with a simple spelling and grammar check. Volume 6 still has these issues but I feel they are fewer. Whether that is because they got lucky this book or are actually paying better attention I don't know.As for the story itself, this continues to be a great series. I enjoy the first person writing style of feeling like you are almost the character's conscious and listening to his inner conversations with himself. Naofumi continues to struggle through struggles as a person as well as one of the four Holy Heroes. This book (and the others in the series) are an exceptionally easy read. The average person could probably finish each book in a couple hours if they sat down to do so. Pace yourself. There may be 14 published volumes in Japan but we are waiting on the translation process here in the US.
Entertaining continuation of the series, but I am getting a bit fed up with the extreme and somewhat simple behavior of the protagonist. Mind you, extreme personality quirks are common in light novels. Hopeful he can let at least some of the hate go in the next parts. The hero is getting a bit too dark for my taste.I was also not in the mood for the long combat scenes. I certainly glanced through them near the end...At the moment I am not sure whether I will proceed with the series or not. Maybe when looking for something simple and yet dark...
The translation still leaves much to be desired. It's hard to believe it's a professional translation half the time when sentences are confusing to understand, and words are misspelled and misused or left untranslated as if the reader is just supposed to know what they mean. And that doesn't even touch upon inconsistencies for terms and moves.Like really, for example, they can't use the term "dating sim" instead of "gyaruge"? I wouldn't even know what "gyaruge" meant if I didn't go out of my way to google it. I highly doubt the publishing company even understand the concept of quality-proofing.
Having read fansubs of the original several times over, the current story contains some nice fluff to add more to the world. While I have nothing against the story itself (aside from some unnecessary filler), I do have issues with this "professional translation". The book comes from a professional company but appears amateurish at best. The list of faults include (but are not limited to):* Bad grammar* Bad punctuation* Spelling errors* Proofreading errors* No real help in determining who's words you are reading if there are more than two characters* Sloppy point of view changes* Production issuesAmong those, the most prominent is multiple characters talking and not fully knowing which character it is. This distracts the reader and may make some have to go back to read the conversation again to make sure they know who is talking. Combine this with a missing quotation to end a character's line (done a few times throughout the book) and you end up with a real mess to try and decipher. It gets even worse when there is a sudden character point of view change. The side story has significant readability issue when there is a character point of view swap with no indication of whose view it is until a view lines in.Like the past novels, proofreading is a bit lacking. As mentioned in other reviews, there is a line where spaces were completely forgotten and not caught by a proofreader. Include grammar, spelling and punctuation errors and you have a book that appears to have been translated by a fansubber. Unlike the fansubbers though, there isn't a place to post a comment pointing out the mistakes and seeing them fixed. Also, one has no choice but to pay for this copy instead of donating through goodwill AFTER seeing the work. If one is guaranteed pay to do the work, then shouldn't it be better quality than the work done by those who volunteered to do it?Finally we get to production quality. Thankfully the production quality isn't as bad as Volume 3's quality. There aren't any misaligned sections of 12 pieces of paper, but the trend of being able to see each individual section of 12 pieces of paper is ever apparent. Loosely holding the book by its spine makes it where you can see each section separately instead of it appearing as if the pages were appended all at once. There is also the recurring blank pages at the end of the book. Are we supposed to draw on these or something? (sections of 12 pieces of paper = 10-12 pieces of paper that make up about 20-22 pages of the book)To summarize:* Pros: - Great Story* Cons: - Mistakes of publisher lower the quality of the book.
I've read up to this point in the hope that the writing will get better. It hasn't. Something will be said and then later that fact is completely disregarded. Or the Author will add stuff to something that already happened in the past to try to change it.SpoilersAn example of this is the heroes are summoned during the waves to the locations and so far all the locations have been in the kingdom their in. But then it says other kingdoms are also fighting the waves, if that's so why arnt the heroes summoned then? This is just one of many many examples.
I've read the web novel translation that's posted online so I have a general idea of what's going to happen, yet in this entire volume there were only 2 events that have remained consistent with it so it was pleasantly surprising. The author did a good job fleshing out the journey that he lightly went over in the light novel, the differences are appearing but I still found this an enjoyable read~I'll go over a general review since I've already read the first 4 volumes. Overall I like the story, a huge theme here is rags to riches, when Naofumi gets everything stolen at the beginning he works afterwards trying to make a living, eventually becoming a successful traveling merchant. It is a bit simple, light hearted, and predictable, but its an enjoyable read.

Collins hasn't tied her future to a specific date, or weighted it down with too much finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight to the death.Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the importance of holding on to one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a new Theseus, is cold, calculating and still likable. Before reading The Hunger Games trilogy, I had more than a few people tell me the first two books were good, but the last one was lacking. I couldn't disagree more. The story is harsh, gruesome, and bleak. It had to be. It's a first person account of an individual who has survived two Hunger Games and plays a major role in a revolution. Of course it's going to be brutal. Had the story drawn to a close with Katniss standing majestically with trumpets blaring and flags waving, it would have been completely unrealistic.I also heard a few people express disappointment in the conclusion of the Katniss/Peeta storyline. I've read people's reviews taking issue with how Katniss and Peeta are represented at the end of Mockingjay, asking "Where's the passion?" Passion? Are they insane? First of all, the story is told in first person by a character who is admittedly not at all comfortable being demonstrative and doesn't respond well to those who are. There was never going to be a hearts/candy/flowers declaration happening here. Peeta has a borderline obssessive love for Katniss throughout most of the trilogy. The way I read the story, by the end of the first Hunger Games, she returns the feeling. Though hesitant to think why she does the things she does, or to state it aloud, she expresses it in so many different ways throughout the remainder of the trilogy, there really is no doubt. Despite the fact that she is suffering major PTSD, she agrees to take on the stress of being the symbol of revolution and take a front line role to bring him back. Regardless of the amount of trauma they both endure, they still eventually turn back to each other. Gale was a strong character, but he had not gone through what Katniss did in the arena and would never have been able to understand that part of her. The time she spends clinging to him and avoiding Peeta is essentially an attempt to return to the person she was before the games (which was never going to happen). Peeta was the walking, living, breathing reminder of the trauma endured. I thought it telling that Peeta returned to Region 12. Like Gale, he could have gone anywhere when it was all over, yet he went where Katniss was. Really, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch needed each other to become human again (or as human as they were ever going to be). Katniss reminded me of uncles I had who, when they returned from war, sat in a darkened room, staring at a wall day after day for over a year before they could handle being amongst the living again.I'll admit part of me would have liked President Snow's demise to be more than it was. Considering the amount of suffering he caused, part of me is bloodthirsty enough to have wanted him to suffer a great deal more. There are also characters I would have liked to survive (Finnick, Cinna, and Prim to name a few), but their deaths helped to illustrate the randomness and unfairness of death in wartime.There are parts of this story we'll never get to see because it is told from Katniss' point of view. We see only what she sees and know only what she thinks is going on. I, for one, would be interested in knowing more about events of the story from Peeta and/or Haymitch's point of view. Peeta's fight back from his memory hijacking would be an intriguing read.Ultimately, I found this book engaging, infuriating, exhausting, and funny all at the same time. To have had Katniss serene and sweetly declaring life to be sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows would have been absurd. She is with a husband (partner?) whom she loves and is utterly devoted to. She has two children she loves, but is worried what they will think when they know the role their parents played in the past. She and Peeta are happy, but remain somewhat haunted which is perfectly realistic for what the characters have gone through.

When you are thinking through it as you read it, and thinking about it long after you’ve read the last word on the last page.I had little to no expectations when I first started reading the Hunger Games Trilogy. If a book is trending and seems interesting, I will add it to my “to read†list. This is how I first started reading Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. After finishing Mockingjay, I was blown away. All I could think was, how many of the YA readers will understand the nuances of Collins’ message?She hooked you in with the “will she or won’t she†scenario. “Will she or won’t she†pick Peeta or Gale? “Will she or won’t she†survive a game that does not allow for love to shine through? Those questions get you through the first book, and possibly half way through the second book, but those same questions are a moot point with Mockingjay.Mockingjay stripped you of your hopeless romantic naiveté. There is no room for romance when the world is collapsing around you. There is barely room to breathe. There are no good guys or bad guys, only survivors. Mockingjay asks difficult moral questions: can man ever hold seats of power without corruption? Can war ever actually solve a dispute? At what price is man willing to pay for absolute power?I won’t even go into Collins’ varied symbolisms. Part of the pleasure of reading is finding them yourselves and asking yourself what the author is telling you, the reader. It becomes a communication between the author and the reader. It makes the novel Mockingjay even more important because it is written for younger readers, our future, those that will decide the world events of tomorrow. Collins does all this without a lecture, without loosing her characters or her plot, she has crafted an incredibly well written story that I would gladly recommend to anyone who asks.After I finished reading Mockingjay I had the same feeling as I had when I finished reading The Lord of the Flies so many years ago. Yes, I am comparing Mockingjay to a classic. There is no way around it. Mockingjay, like Lord of the Flies, asks you deep moralistic questions through the point of view of young characters. This is simply another great novel that makes you go hmmm.My favorite quotes from Mockingjay:“Frankly, our ancestors don’t seem much to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, with the wars and the broken planet. Clearly, they didn’t care about what would happen to the people who came after them.â€â€œIt’s a saying from thousands of years ago, written in a language called Latin about a place called Rome,†he explains. “Panem et Circuses translates into ‘Bread and Circuses’. The writer was saying in return for full bellies and entertainment, his people had given up their political responsibilities and therefore their power.â€â€œSomething is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children’s lives to settle its differences.â€
My long ago 9th grader classical history students alerted me to this trilogy during a discussion on the Minotaur. I asked if anyone knew what a "tribute" was and every hand shot up. We had a sidebar on the Hunger Games. As soon as class was dismissed, I ordered my Kindle copy.I immediately understood Katniss: the mindset to survive unthinkable tragedy, to distrust as first reflex, to protect others, to wrap oneself in emotional distance - yep I got that. Refusal to be a game piece, to surrender myself, That she was in her teens and I in my 40's mattered not a whit. Still, many years later, Katniss and I amble through a reunion - a literary walkabout is still a fresh experience. This is unusual for me. (The films, though entertaining and generally well done, can't compete with the story in my head. Though I confess the idea of drinking fruit juices recommended by s Donald Sutherland voiceover can give me chills.)Peeta's deep love for Katniss and her misunderstanding of it in so many ways - especially feeling unworthy of it - I also understand. I am fortunate to have married my Peeta. He may not have Collins' character 's gift for the right words, I know he loves me always.The other marvelous folks who populate the books are an odd sort of family now. Reading their collective story never gets old. And they always remind me to be my fierce though flawed, self and never be a piece in anyone's games.

This book about the author's emotional healing through a combination of tango and Zen was intriguing. Although one might think the two were not at all similar, the intensity of immersion in both is the same.My biggest challenge with the book was with the cavalier way the author described how all the men at the milongas thought of her as a dancing goddess, of how she could eat whatever she wanted without gaining an ounce, of how she was able to just pick up and move to Buenos Aires for a year with no financial worries. I would have felt more empathy for the author if she had expressed any negative feelings at all about anything except herself.Discussed this in a book group, though, where people who were more familiar with Zen felt this was an uplifting and inspiring book. They would have given it 5 stars.
If you have a passing interest in Argentine Tango but are not sure of how the dance affects those who travel to Buenos Aires, this book is for you. It is not a book of anecdotes covered with tasty frosting but rather a collection of experiences of living life as a temporary "Porteno", learning the dance and what affect it has on life for the many unique people Maria Finn met in a short time. In the end, the reader understands the nature of the title and is left wondering what has happened since living in Argentina.
Really loved the way she incorporated her experiences with learning about the Tango along with her personal trials and development. The background info on the Argentine Tango was just what I'd been looking for. She made it easy to understand and make sense of how and went it developed as it did, culturally and psychologically. Made me want to go out and learn to Tango! Well written. I'd read more of her work and highly recommend this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its many layers. It is a primer on argentine tango, a story of personal recovery, a comic account of feminine New York social life and a witty dialogue, among others. The author shifts easily from technical dance terminology to humorous verbal exchanges to flowing, descriptive creative writing. The book stays intriguing as the author describes her journey through the learning curve of tango and inserts flashbacks to help the reader understand what happened to her and why she has chosen to learn tango, which is a masochistic process of sorts. All in all, a complete book that kept me interested.
HMT&TMH was one of the best stories I've read in a long time. I was engrossed in the protagonist's problems adjusting to life w/o her husband, as well as her trials and tribulations with learning the tango. She described her friends and dance partners so well that I thought I was dancing and chatting with the class. This is not a girlie book, anybody can and should enjoy this story.
We have a lovely Argentine Tango community in SW FL. We now have a "tango bookclub" to give us insight to the dance, the history and the culture of tango. This was the 2nd book we read. Although none of us believed that the main character could learn to dance this dance so well in such a short time, every one of us could relate our experience of WHY we became so devoted to this dance. Several of us could empathize with her and found that her experiences were similar to our own. It had a very authentic ring to it and her research into the history and culture of the dance seemed quite accurate. What I liked best is that the author chose to express her personal feelings about this beautiful dance and how it helped to change her life. I have experienced the same and heard many similar stories. Good job!
I read this book and LOVED IT. I sent a copy to my sister and she immediately sent another copy to her best friend. I'm sureit went on from there. I'm not a tango dancer but the story of the author's heartbreak the challenge of moving on is universal and we all havea lot to learn from her travels. It reminded me that all personal tragedies are opportunities for growth and change.Maria Finn obviously takes this very much to heart and I found myself almost immediately cheering her on. As a protagonist, she'shard to resist. I absolutely marvel that, after splitting up with her husband, she would take up tango -- a technical and punishingdance form to master after such a devastating ego blow. She seemed to draw faith that she would triumph from some deep well even she didn't know she had. The book is apage turner -- and I laughed out loud many times. I recommend it HIGHLY -- not just for dance lovers -- but for anyonewho has ever had their heartbroken and found the courage to put it back together again.
Interesting concept of getting over heartbreak through the lessons learned in Tango classes. The author had some pretty neat comparisons of dance principles to life principles. Only gave this three stars because there were various areas where the story seemed to drag and the dance descriptions were confusing to read. However, I would recommend this book to anyone trying to get over an emotional struggle since it does provide various outside the box ways to think about the journey through such a difficult time.
