I guess I was expecting more species but I've found that flowers in my desert area are missing from a lot of references.
I was able to attend a lecture by Meg Quinn, and signed up for another. This guide was written for my area. I wish she had included a few extra small pictures of seed pods and/or seeds.
I like this book, but I wish it included more wildflowers. It is a limited resource.

Every few years or so, conditions in the desert become more optimal, better amounts of moisture coupled with the right temperatures and sunlight, and then suddenly the proverbial "carpets" of desert flowers erupt. Either way, the flowers of the desert can attract, and even seduce. Meg Quinn has written a solid guide about the flowers along the way on your desert hikes.The book contains a good map outlining the extent of the four principal deserts of the American Southwest: Chihuahuan, the Great Basin, Sonoran, and Mojave. She admits that her selection of flowers is weight more towards the latter two. Eighty-four desert flowers are identified: one to each page, with a quality picture sufficient for identification purposes. The common name of the flower heads each page, followed by its scientific (Latin) name, along with the flower's "family." This is followed by a brief (3-5 sentence) description of its habitat and characteristics. The flower's range and elevation are highlighted. At the end, there is a brief glossary and bibliography.Favorites? The Desert Paintbrush, and the Sacred Datura. Certainly they are easy to identify!Overall, a solid, useful guidebook, for anyone living in the Southwest, or passing through. 4-stars.
Wildflowers of The Desert Southwest has good high resolution photos which helps in identifying flowers. Most older books have low rez hard to see photos. This book has great to the point descriptions. The only down side is there needs to be more flowers included. So far every Desert flower I saw or photographed was in the book. I would encourage the author to expand this body of work and include more flowers with high rez detailed photos. You won't be disappointed buying this book as it is better than most of the books I have seen being sold.

It's a great book if you a looking for a broad view on Korean history. It doesn't dwell on details, mainly during ancient and medieval eras, but is well accomplished when dealing with more recent events.
This is an excellent primer on Korean history. It is clear and concise in presenting such events and provides an excellent Korean perspective on the events while acknowledging other possible perspectives.
Like: a comprehensive history, clearly organized. Chronologically oriented.Dislike: a bit dry. The maps could have been better.It is, as part of the "Essential Series," in line and quite good.
For a Korean history book it is very good doesn't go too deep but doesn't really leave you wanting to know more, recommended

Good information but doesn't go into deep detail.Reading was significantly hindered by writing that was slightly pretentious and sometimes difficult to understand; I've had no issue reading other texts for any of my classes, but I found myself going back occasionally and rereading passages because of poor sentence structure and/or redundant use of vocabulary. (Why use the word "capitulated" instead of "surrendered"? It makes no sense.)

THE most useful book and pattern adjusting information I have laid my hands on in years. I thought I would give it a try since I have been sewing for years. This is an excellent "Beginners" book for those just starting out. Simple and easy to understand. Thank you Nancy Zieman.
Anything by Nancy Zieman is out of the park great. This is my continuous go-to book. I have this in hard copy, but as I am trying to streamline everything, I am giving up my hard copy and going digital.I have learned a lot from her over the years, and anything she has is worth it!
In the seventies, Nancy Zieman showed a series on her PBS show. My parents were getting ready to go to Europe on a much hoped for vacation. But, my mom was rather on the large size. She'd gone to several stores looking for outfits that she could wear and feel comfortable in. No luck.So, she brought out her tapes of Nancy's shows and after viewing them, I was able to alter patterns and construct several outfits and blouses Mom could wear and feel presentable in.Her outfits were color coordinated of natural fibers, so she could mix and match on her 6 week tour. She got several compliments from other ladies on the tour; she did look good, too.However, Mom stored her VHS tapes in the attic and they didn't survive the heat. When I was faced with a similar problem...Well, it's been about 40 years since using those techniques and I didn't feel confident enough cutting into cotton, linen and silk before referring to those wonderful techniques.Well, the book is exactly what is needed.Now, I'll look good and feel comfortable watching my daughter get married and won't embarrass her on their wedding cruise.

What eye opening method is slide and pivoting technique to adjust to your size.In Japan, usually we cut in half and add/abstract the measurement, but I had been in doubt because it does not fit to change each part of your body such as abstracting your waist while adding your hip. So this book really answered my question.Also there are not many fitting instruction book nor course are available in Japan. Even at school of fashion does not teach fitting. I admit there are so many people with so many type of bodice, that is why fitting books and course (both on-line and off-line), which is very envying to me!Only a couple of things I do not like is that there is no page info. I absolutely love this book and method. It clarified the adjustment process to use on patterns to make clothes fit me better. I've since used the pivot method on a blouse and it fits me beautifully! I also used her slide method, in conjunction changes advised from with "Pants for Real People," on a pair of shorts that made the pattern adjustment easy and flawless. I would highly recommend purchasing this book if your have a body shape that is not the "standard" shape. I can't wait to make more beautiful clothes that actually fit me comfortably!
It was a very good book for some basic changes. It doesn't adequately cover the multiple changes I would consider common. Hard to make all the adjustments needed for our small frames, large cup sizes, sway back etc. I know you can't have every scenario, but I felt it was a little abbreviated for the multiple adjustments.
Nancy presents a very logical and easy to understand way to fit your patterns to your body. Her approach differs from the tissue fitting method and seems easier to do. This book is well illustrated and well organized.
I've been sewing for over 50 years and I've gotten plumper since I started so I need to be able to alter patterns to fit better. I went to a class for a system to alter patterns but by the time I would have bought all the tools and patterns it would have been over $150. This book covers a system that is very similar to the expensive one and I know that Nancy Zieman is a very good seamstress. I look forward to making some pajama bottoms for my husband that will fit without being baggy and misshapen.

However, I will use this book because the pieces are so easily learned and fit nicely into my church's worship environment. I'm always looking for a Sunday piece at the last minute, so this fills the bill of one that can quickly be mastered for performance.All of the pieces are 3 or 4 pages long (good offertory length), with the exception of "His Eye is on the Sparrow", which is 5 pages long. Key changes are simply, but effectively, executed...no complex chords to deal with.In summary, it's a solid, technically unexciting, but useful book, over-rated in difficulty level.
The arrangements in this book are more intermediate than early advanced. That being said, it is really nice to be able to sit and play these songs without much practice. The arrangements are nice, maybe a little to short, but overall I am really pleased.

Love this book for my own enjoyment--wonderful song choices and rich, full arrangements. I use this with my advanced piano students as well; they find it accessible if a bit challenging on occasion. The arrangements are great for SHOWING students great ways to enrich playing in their own hymnals.
Martha Mier does a great job on all her compositions. They are not too difficult, but not simple either. I would say to play them well, you would need to be at Certificate of Merit at least level 4.

This is a great arrangement of wonderful hymns! I heard a woman playing in a hospital lobby and had to stop and ask about the music. The songs challenged me but I could still play them all the way through 1st try. I like the key changes in each song as well. They're very melodious and the tune remains recognizable throughout the song, my husband agrees. My favorite is Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. I'll be looking for more work by Martha Mier!

I like everything about this book. Starting with the topic, a show of documents and art at the Menil Collection in Houston, which then travelled to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva, Switzerland. Assembled and curated over years, with considerable intelligence and emotion, the show is amazing and covers a lot of ground, not just Gandhi, far from it. The book is superb in the way it covers the topics, and is written beautifully. I love the layout, the paper, the typeface, the object. I read it enthusiastically, continue to refer to it as I guide the show in Geneva, and even enjoy just looking at it on my table.

This book arrived within 3 days in mint condition.Radiation posioning has always interested me, and this book details Ouchi's condition after being exposed to high amounts of radiation; as well as explaining WHY these symptoms emerged. The reader is also given insight into how the characters were feeling at these times, except Ouchi, who becomes unable to communicate, so his prospective is lost.The only drawback is that some parts are very vague or not detailed just enough to understand, but these parts are far and few between.Pictures are included- whenever the note "[Insert A/1]" appears, flip to the pictures at the halfway point to the one corresponding to the letter/number :) I only realized this partway, so I thought I would mention it.A nessecary read in the age of nuclear warfare.
This is a book about a man named Ouchi whose chromosomes were destroyed by a blast of neutron rays while working in unsafe conditions in a uranium processing facility. For 83 days, a crack team of doctors, nurses, and medical experts from several countries try to keep him alive. Because Ouchi's chromosomes have been destroyed, his body cannot generate new cells to replace the dead ones. His skin falls off. His mucus membranes disappear. He is in constant pain. He suffers massive internal hemorrhages and the medical staff have to constantly pump fluids and nutrients into his body to keep him alive. His organs fail, one by one, and their functions are taken over by various medical apparatus. At various points, Ouchi's doctors and nurses question whether or not what they are doing is the right thing to do. That is to say, are they actually helping him, or are they just endlessly prolonging his agony?This is a slim but tough book.It goes into gruesome but necessary detail about the deterioration of a human body afflicted by neutron beam radiation. It is told in a straightforward reportorial style that goes into thoroughgoing technical detail but not so much that the average reader cannot follow along. It also gives space to the emotional turmoil the medical staff underwent as they battled to keep Ouchi alive.In some ways, this is a book about the dangers of atomic radiation, but it is also a strange kind of existential novel where the main character's mental state is largely unknown at the height of his suffering. Ouchi was under heavy sedation for much of his sickness and he was unable to communicate in any detail what his thoughts and feelings were. The book seems to suggest that had he been awake his suffering would've been monstrous. The medical staff did what they thought was best even in the face of a hopeless situation.This is harsh story taken from real life and told in harrowing but necessary detail.
I found this book to be far dryer than I expected, and thus it was very difficult to get through. As to the story, I don't think I've ever been more disturbed. What Mr. Ouchi endured makes even the worst of hells pale in comparison. But I didn't get the sense that medical staff were coldly treating the poor man like an 'experiment', as has been suggested. It seemed to me that each nurse and physician was dedicated to helping Mr. Ouchi heal in any way they could.
Such a great book. Kinda fascinating and horrific at the same time. Kept me engrossed all the way to the end.

Despite the efforts of some of the world's most talented and compassionate medical professionals, Mr. Ouchi was doomed from the blue flash. This book describes the hope of success and the grim progression of the inevitable. Intricate medical procedures and nuclear physics were explained in a way that did not bore or confuse me, and did not cause me to lose sight of the humanity of the suffering patient.After watching some Cold War movies I was interested in learning about what happened to people who were exposed to high levels of radiation. In the movies people grew pale, threw up a lot, and died; I knew that couldn't be the entire story. Radiation Sickness is described on the internet as including things like vomiting, hair loss, skin hemorrhages, bleeding, loss of white blood cells, pain, delirium and often death, but that seemed vague. This book, however, explained in detail how these symptoms (and several unexpected others) actually played out in the life of a thirty-five year old husband and father. Afterwards I felt a little guilty for reading it and peering into the window of such agony just to satisfy my curiosity.The gentle and amiable patient did not realize for several days that he was what is termed a "walking ghost". While he appeared to be fine for a while, all of his cells were damaged and his death was certain. Pain medication to make him comfortable when symptoms arose would have ordinarily been the only intervention while awaiting the inevitable, but in his case the hospital staff and his family did not tell him that he received a lethal dose and maintained that fiction almost until the day he died. The doctors kept giving him transplants, transfusions, skin grafts, injections and cardiac massage -- a heroic effort overall -- to keep him alive until maybe something would actually help. Since severe radiation sickness is not common, these folks had no real idea what they could do and dealt with symptoms as they arose. And arose. And arose. The fact that Mr. Ouchi survived for months is nothing short of amazing, but perhaps honor and hope came at too high a cost: his incomprehensible CONSCIOUS suffering.Despite the horrific subject, the book was engaging. I came to care about all of the real people involved. I think I learned a lot. I'm glad I read it, and intend to read it again more slowly.
