I purchased this book for my Corporate Governance course, and I'm thoroughly enjoying reading it. The only reason for one less star is I feel there's a lot of information condensed into each chapter. Some of the information is repetitive, or otherwise omittable. However, seeing as knowledge is infinite, I commend the authors for including so many examples and testimonies from those either involved in fraudulent activity, or those who were responsible for both deterring/exposing fraud. None the less, it's one of my favorite courses, and the text also earns a title of favorite book read in college.
I ordered this book to use in a graduate class. It is one of my favorite books. It is informative yet to the point and easy to follow. There is not too much useless fluff.
This is a well-written and interesting book. I used it to earn continuing education hours for my CFE credential.
Not up to the level I was expecting.
Great book, I am using it as a textbook for part of a class I am teaching.
A concise look into fraud prevention and the importance of internal controls. Easily understandable, yet detailed.
Served it purpose

Like consciousness, time is a subject that no philosopher or physicist has ever managed to nail down completely. Thanks to their slippery character, being so close to us (the first one IS us) they are endless sources for fountains of speculation. In this book, Rovelli's subject is time, but consciousness comes into this narrative as well.Rovelli is a "time denier". OK, that's being a little unfair but not by much. What he denies is that there exists an independent, fundamental property or quality of the universe that is time. Of course the universe is full of movement and change, events unfolding into other events. His basic position is that time emerges into our perspective, our viewpoint, from these phenomena, but it is merely an illusion. The movement is real, the changing is real, but the time in which all of this seems to occur is nothing more than a manifestation of human (possibly animal) mind and the illusion, in turn, is supported by the entropy generated in the functioning of our brains. The book (not long read) is divided into three parts. In the first Rovelli covers the various sub-disciplines of physics and their temporal implications (or lack thereof). He begins with classical physics (the equations work backwards in time), and moves on to General and Special Relativity, and quantum mechanics. Here he demonstrates that our simple intuition of a universal time flowing from past to future is untenable. Time, mind-independent time, if it exists at all, cannot be like that. In part two he further demolishes time. Not only is it not what we think, in and for physics, it doesn't really exist at all; even the present is an illusion! In part three, he puts time back together for and in the perspective of an subjective viewpoint. He argues it is the fact that we view the world from a perspective, that when we perceive the world we inevitably blur the details into a sort of summary or gestalt for our perspective, that causes time to appear to mind, The physics supporting that appearance comes down to thermodynamics. Human time, brain time, is "thermal time". Certainly Rovelli thinks thermodynamics (in particular the 2nd law) is real, but while responsible for what consciousness perceives of time and so a real enough subjective experience, from the 3rd party perspective of physics, change is real, but time is a mirage. This book is written for a lay audience. There is almost no math in it (what there is appears in footnotes), and it defends a view common to much of the physics and philosophy community. To be sure Rovelli differs a bit from some of his peers. He argues that relativistic "block time" is no more a "true portrait of objective time" than any other theory. In Rovelli's view remember there is no such thing as "objective time".In 2015 a philosopher (Roberto Unger) and a physicist (Lee Smolin) wrote "The Singular Universe and the Reality of Time". This book (reviewed by me on Amazon) makes precisely the opposite case from that of Rovelli. Of course they recognize what Relativity and quantum mechanics imply about time, but they maintain, nevertheless, that a notion (and reality) of objective, "universal time", is more fundamental than any other phenomena of the universe, even more than space! Rovelli mentions this book in a footnote and admits that Unger and Smolin's view "is defensible", but he leaves it there and never addresses what is defensible about it.The Unger/Smolin book goes against the grain of 95% of today's physicists. Personally I agree with Smolin and Unger. The fact (thanks to limiting effect of the speed of light) that we cannot map our present to any present in a remote galaxy, or even the nearest star does not mean there is no present there, in fact everywhere. Something is happening, NOW, everywhere in the universe. We do not know what it is, but that does not mean the present isn't real as Rovelli believes. Had Rovelli directly addressed Unger and Smolin I would have given this book another star. Had he not mentioned them at all, I would have taken another away.In summary this is a decent and well written book advocating for a particular view of time (or no time) that I happen to think is wrong, but what do I know? It happens to be the dominant view in physics today. Rovelli is a well respected physicist and a good writer. Those of you interested in the subject will find this book valuable whether you agree with the author or not.
The Order of Time is one of the few books that can change the perception of the world as we see it. For example a human being is not a thing at all, but a process, »like the cloud above the mountain, it's a complex process which enters and exits food, information, light, words and so on. Knot of knots in a network of social relations, in a network of chemical processes, in a network of emotions exchanged with its own kind." I've also learned something about entropy. »What makes the world go round are not sources of energy but the sources of low entropy. Without low entropy, energy would be diluted into uniform heat and the world would go to sleep in a state of thermal equilibrium - there would no longer be any distinction between past and future, and nothing would happen. Traces of the past exist, and not traces of the future, only because entropy was low in the past."Really a great book that transforms the way we perceive "the reality". It probably should be read more than once. The final thoughts of the writer on the meaning of life and death are also beautiful. Almost a little poetic. The book is written in an intelligible way.
Carlo Rovelli has the brilliance of Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein and the communicative skills of Carl Sagan. Otherwise he is an Italian theoretical physicist that specializes in quantum gravity and is a proponent, if not quite an advocate, of loop theory. Beyond that he is a philosopher with a heart for ancient poetry and love. And he brings all of it to bear in this delightful book about time, which, in the end, is life, and everything, including the context in which it unfolds. It would be in error to suggest that time doesn’t exist, but it would be equally in error to suggest that time is as simple as the continuum we record with our clocks. What I like most about the book is the fact that Rovelli recognizes that philosophy and science, if not two sides of the same coin, are cousins. He refers to Proust, which few scientists do, and suggests that while reason is among the best tools available for interpreting our “collective delirium,†it is “only an instrument, a pincer.â€The science and the prose are very accessible. You will, however, have to be willing to think abstractly, a skill that in our wired, binary world seems to be greatly dissipating. And he is the first scientist I have read in a while who takes time to explain why the problem is sometimes not the science itself, but the limitations of language. Language is a human construction and has not kept up with our scientific revelation. Which is why theoretical physicists sometimes seem to be speaking another language. If only there was another language that was constructed in the world as we know it today, our communication would be so much easier and our knowledge would expand more rapidly. It would be impossible to summarize the knowledge contained in this book. You really have to read it. Here is a start, however: “The world is not a collection of things, it is a collection of events.†If you can comprehend that the rest is largely additional perspective. And if the idea that universal time doesn’t exist in any absolute sense seems a stretch, consider Rovelli’s simple explanation (I’m paraphrasing): People never used to worry about clocks. They worried about the cycle of sunshine and darkness. But that cycle is different in every single village, town, and city on the planet. The cycle varies both east to west and north to south. And back when we used to spend our lives in our little village we didn’t care. But then the scientists and engineers invented trains to take us from one village to the next. And people needed to know when the train left their village. But how can you develop a timetable when every village has its own time? You can’t. But, at the same time, it’s not quite practical to say that the whole world has just one time. Farmers don’t care what the sun is doing in London. They care what it’s doing on their farm. (China actually has no time zones by edict. The entire country is on Beijing time and there are significant practical limitations.) The solution was the time zone, and it’s a compromise. Time zones are a construct and practical in the local sense, but highly inaccurate when talking about the universe. In the language of theoretical physics, they don’t exist.Eastern philosophers believe that reality is not knowable. It is real, but is made up of an infinite number of variables. We can only comprehend or think about a handful at a time. A tree is real. I can touch it and smell it. But it is not entirely knowable because there are too many variables (e.g. altitude, climate, soil, etc.) that define each tree for me to know them all. Time is the same way. Time is real but it is not knowable. Throw in the limitations of language and it begins to look like an illusion. To his great credit, Rovelli admits that there is much we don’t know. Think of a Seurat painting that has been blacked out. We have exposed a few, perhaps 10% (my number), of the original dots of pigment. It’s a lot, but we’re still guessing as to what the underlying picture is.And that’s pretty exciting. The key to our understanding to date, however, is the second law of thermodynamics which states that entropy can never decrease. It’s critical to our understanding of time, as Rovelli explains. Personally I’m not convinced it’s inviolate. Perhaps we just haven’t uncovered enough dots of pigment yet. If entropy could work both ways it would explain a lot, but attraction does not equal fact. (Entropy obviously has a big role in causality, of course. Bidirectional entropy would be a huge boost for inductive reason.)It’s a short book and even if you get through a small amount of it you will learn a lot. Beyond writing in an accessible way, Rovelli comes off as very personable. The perfect person to sit down and share a cup of coffee with. If only he had the time. (Sorry)A marvelous book that I highly recommend.

My only regret is finding these works so late in life. He captured both beauty and subtle emotion. A master indeed.
What a beautifully put together book this is. I would give it a 9 1/2 on color since the color is terrific! The only way color could be any better would to be to see the painting in person and sometimes that is just not possible. The layout is nice, presentation good. The only thing I would mark down on this otherwise gorgeous book is if you are not completely, totally familiar with the painter's work you are lost as which painting you are looking at. The table of contents are not numbered (ding- lost a couples points), the name of the painting is not on the page (ding- there go some more points). Otherwise - if you don't mind a little grunt work purchase the book. 4 star rating just for the table of contents
Great paintings by a great painter. I love art and I love to create my own art amd this book has some really great paintings to inspire you to greatness. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do and have a nice day.
Bouguereau painted the human form and flesh tones better than any artist that I have ever experienced. The images zoom well so that you can examine his work more closely. Works well on mobile apps, but larger view does not work on my iMac.
Great digital book for artists.
Amazing photos of amazing painting Thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
Great showing of a Master not well known in the general world.
An excellent collection of paintings, especially for people who like this genre of paintings. The major drawback of the book (and others in the same series) is that it is not possible to zoom into the pictures. Therefore when viewing on a small screen it is not possible to view details.

Review
"The best high-concept YA thriller of the year is this paranoia-soaked novel in which an infected Colorado high school is quarantined by the government, leading to various cliques that transform into warring tribes. Gritty and fearless." - Booklist"... (a) high-concept mashup, tossing Walter Hill's The Warriors into a high school setting and seeding it with elements of Lord of the Flies." - Publishers Weekly "Quarantine thrives on themes of human nature and an ultra-realistic tone. Unpredictable, gory, and full of death and despair, this story is not for the light-hearted." - VOYA"You will not be able to put this book down." - Huffington Post Books

Over the years, I have soured on the topic of YA (young adult) novels. The vast majority are poorly written and shallow at best. However, there is an exception to every rule and a rule to every exception. The Quarantine Trilogy by Lex Thomas (there's another Quarantine trilogy out there, but I haven't read that one) is one of those shining gems that resembles hope for YA fiction. Overall, I say it's a beautiful satire on the rage of our youth. The basic setup is to take a ~2,000 kid high school, lock it down, and kill all the adults. That's the first two chapters. From there, McKinley High School becomes hell on earth. After the setup, what once seemed like a relatively peaceful high school is now a gritty survival, kill-or-be-killed scenario. This book has nonstop obscenities, brutal, graphic violence (vividly described enough to make me nauseous, and I play Mortal Kombat for fun), and charged sexual content. Oh, wait, isn't that just a slightly hyperbolic version of what we have today? Exactly. For the concerned parent, I assure you, this is nothing your kid hasn't seen before. One week in a public high school, and the only thing they'll learn from this book is how to write an excellent satire (a very worthy talent, I might add). I was very sheltered at home, with a helicopter mom and a hypervigilant father, but by the time I read this book in freshman year, I saw nothing new. It was just an exaggerated rendition of my everyday life, put into better words than I could've done at the time.I give this book a full 5 stars for the solid writing and realism.
4.5 STARS! First I must admit that this is one of those books I read the "free sample" for and then turned away from purchasing it and going any further. It's not that it wasnt intriguing, but I thought, "Here we go again, another catastrophic virus forces teens to be locked inside a high school and all hell breaks loose during the quarantine". In fact, I contemplated naming a book shelf HS Quarantine because this theme has been done again and again, BUT I decided to give this book one more try after reading some trusted reviews. I have to say, I'm so glad I did because this book was an absolute thrill ride! I forced myself to put it down this morning at 2:00 am out of necessity, but devoured it again the minute I could. For those with weak stomachs and sensitive ears, this book is not for you! There is gritty language, sexual themes and an abundance of graphic violence. This book is a dash of The Lord of the Flies, The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner (without order, total chaos prevails), but with a stiff R rating. With that being said, I loved the colorful narrative, the realistic teen relationships and the high school social hierarchy with stereotypical cliche names and identity branding ie hair color, clothing, residence within the school, etc. All of these elements thrown together in brilliant disarray makes for an exciting, page-turning, totally believable and original story that I didn't want to ever end...I'm so glad Lex Thomas cleverly wove the makings for several sequels. It's going to be hard to wait for the next book coming out this Summer 2013.The main character in this book is David a typical HS jock that has given up on life since his mother's tragic death a year previous; he has given up on everything except for his younger brother Will, a feisty, rebellious, epileptic who is starting his freshman year of high school. David has alienated his former football team and gets in a fight with the new star football player at a party over his cheating girlfriend. Thus David starts the first day of high school a "dead man walking." However, before the first period bell can even ring on the first day of school an explosion tears away a wing of the school and the teachers suddenly die. The students soon discover the windows are covered and all exits sealed with a quarantine tent canvassing the entire school. Military enters the school to inform the students that they have been infected by a virus that won't leave their body until puberty has runs it's course. The students are deadly to the entire outside world, although a few students did escape. When the virus begins to leave their body, they are eligible for release through a sealed booth and graduate to the outside world. The military drops food and supplies once a week by helicopter, but that creates a dog eat dog environment of gross proportions.Great unique supporting characters and strong, moral main characters make for a great story. Thomas creates a crazy world that you can envision, hear and even smell and its a world that is full of terror and triumph. This is one of those books that is absolutely unforgettable!
High school is a prison. At least it feels that way when you are there. But what our slightly melodramatic youngsters can't imagine is actually being trapped in your high school, under a quarantine that literally makes your high school into a prison. In Lex Thomas's Quarantine: The Loners, you get to see just how ugly high school can be.David knew punching Sam, the star of the football team, was going to have repercussions, but he had no idea they would be so long-lasting. In a normal time, he would have had to watch his back and life would have been difficult until he graduated, but when half the school exploded and the rest was put under a mandatory, isolating quarantine, he was left to survive the insane wrath of Sam with no adults to supervise. When a kid infected with an insane virus that kills all adults instantly runs into the high school, there is no other option but to try to contain the disease by bombing the school. Unfortunately, nothing was contained and all the adults died anyway. Now hundreds of kids are left to fend for themselves with no answers, and no way to feed themselves. The military starts dropping food, but as the seniors age, they start to die the same way, by coughing up their own lungs. In order to avoid the inevitable massacre, the military creates the "graduation booth" where kids who have lost the virus from their systems can safely leave the toxic school and rejoin the rest of society. But that means there are a lot of kids stuck in the school who face years before they can leave. And we all know what happens when kids are left to their own devices for years on end... we have all read Lord of the Flies. It doesn't end well. After a year in the school, gangs have formed so kids can have some fighting chance of staying alive. Without a gang like Varsity, Pretty Ones, Nerds, Freaks, or Sluts, you can pretty much count on starving and looking over your shoulder with every move you make. Thanks to David's impulsive decision to punch Sam for fooling around with David's girlfriend, he is a wanted and shunned man, and his brother Will is guilty by association. They make do, cleaning laundry to trade since they have no chance of actually getting food in the military drops, but Will resents his lot in life. As Scraps (gang-less kids), they barely get by. But when David tries to protect a newly shunned Pretty One from being raped by a Varsity, he accidentally kills the guy and becomes more than just shunned... now he is a wanted man. When he is saved by a bunch of Scraps and Will, the Scraps have an interesting proposition. They want to form their own gang. David finally agrees when the Scraps come together an stand up to Sam for the next drop, but just because they have a gang, it doesn't mean they are safe. Because no one is safe in Quarantine. So, this was quite the story. Two man writing team Lex Hrabe and Thomas Voorhies (pen name: Lex Thomas) created a realistic, terrifying, brutal place that is exactly what you would expect. There is violence and rape and starvation and insanity and even forced "prostitution" where the Pretty Ones are forced to date Varsity in order to get their protection and food and resources. This book is ugly because this situation is ugly. A world where bullies and beasts are strongest is just survival of the fittest. And everyone else is forced to survive on the fringes. But we all know a revolution is imminent when people are scared and starving. Starving people will do anything to eat, even stand up to someone who has all the power when they are essentially powerless as one individual. But together, they can show the powers that be that there is power in numbers. This story felt so real and accurate it was incredibly disturbing. I found myself cringing with each descriptive sentence and action scene. Not because it was gratuitous. Because it was exactly what would happen if this wasn't fiction. There is an amazing depiction of the relationship between brothers, David and Will, that will ring true to any sibling relationship. They hate each other, but love one another, they want to kill each other, but won't let anyone hurt the other, they forgive but don't forget, and most of all, they compete. It was a really well executed relationship for Lex Thomas, and it will ring true for anyone with siblings. But the other characters were just as dynamic and well executed. The boy, Smudge, who preferred being a Scrap, and Dorothy, who abandoned the Scraps out of fear when they faced Sam, and even Hilary, the leader of the Pretty Ones who did what she had to in order to stay alive, but who could barely live with herself anymore. They were executed brilliantly.Since the story is so disturbing, it would probably be best for older young adults, maybe grades 10 and up. But this would be a perfect story for any reluctant reader, boys in particular. Like I said, the story is mature, so be aware of who you give it to. I can't imagine anyone with delicate sensibilities will make it more than 10 pages in this story. My one biggest critique was the difficulty keeping up with the ever-changing point of view. It switched so often it felt a little schizophrenic at times. I never really got used to it. But otherwise, you will enjoy this story if you can stomach the terrifying reality of it all! And you will walk down the halls of your school a little differently once you are finished!

I found this book in an eclectic shop in Essex, CT. I instantly fell in love with Juniper. This is not a children's book but simply for everyone. The photos by Jessika Coker (who adopted and raised this wonder) are stunning; her writing is engaging. You are taken into the unique world of living with a fox who will captivate you. This is a must for anyone who loves foxes, animals in general, extraordinary photography, surprises, a good read, a story you will never forget. It details the journey of a young woman and a fox who learn from each other, form an incredible bond, and how that has changed their lives. Jessika's warmth, understanding, and love of Juniper will touch your heart; Juniper will amaze, delight, and inspire you. You will finish the book and want to give a copy to everyone you know if only to share Juniper's smile.
I have been looking forward to when I would see this book in my mailbox. It was worth the wait! Not only is this a beautiful book for its pictures but the back story and the writing are perfection. I have been a follower of Juniper for a long time and am familiar with her background story from their website but this book takes you on a journey. I couldn’t put it down. Congratulations on your success! You deserve it. Thank you for sharing your story.
Being an avid follower of Juniper in Instagram I had to buy this book. I just love it. The stories, this pictures, the love. Ms Coker is my kind of person. One who loves and adores animals.
Awesome book! Jessika included plenty of photographs that we've come to love of Juniper, Fig, and Moose. It was heartwarming to read their story, and it was a fun surprise to have Juniper's art at the first and last pages.
I was expecting this just to be pictures of Juniper, but there's actually pictures of Moose, the sugar gliders, and Fig! It's very well made and I love having it sit on my coffee table for guests to flip through. The inside of the cover is beautiful with Juniper's "masterpieces", and I loved the quotes included throughout the book. I'm obsessed with Juniper, so obviously I love this book!
I just recently ‘found’ Juniper and I watch the torn pillow video every day! It makes my heart so happy, and my dogs hear her little noise so often, they don’t even raise their heads anymore. I ordered a Polaroid of Juniper, and I can’t wait for it to come in! This book is PERFECT!
I absolutely LOVE Juniper. Her instagram is one of my coping tools for a bad mental health day. I love watching her, Fig, Moose, and the rest of the family. When I heard Jessika was releasing a book, I got really excited. As soon as I had the money for it, I bought it. It was a quick read for me, but it was worth every penny. Fans of Juniper need to get this book. You won't be disappointed. It's filled with not only Juniper's story, and how she and Jessika came together, but also adorable pictures.
If you don’t follow Juniperfoxx on instagram you need to go do that now. This book is the story of her life so far. She is not only the happiest fox but the luckiest too. She has the most precious mama and brothers. Buy the book. You won’t be disappointed. It’s also for a great cause. Jessika is a huge animal activist and she is building a sanctuary.

I have a number of bicycle poster books. Most bicycle poster books have vintage 19th century bicycle posters. After a couple of books you start seeing the same posters in each one. Though Amazon lets you see a 19th century poster as the preview, the majority of posters included by this book are 20th century posters. This represents a significant addition to my collection of bicycle poster books. While five posters are from the 19th century the rest are from the 20th century. One is from the 70s, two from the 60s, two from the 50s, one from the 40s, three from the 30s, six from the 20s, and two from 1900-01. Anyone who has a collection of bicycle poster books will value this addition to their library. This is the only time the majority of the posters included have ever appeared before.
